Trojan.Vundo removal help

I'm infected with Trojan.Vundo. Have followed all your suggested steps so far (ran your recommended adware and spybot program, two recommended anti-virus programs, windows critical updates.

before that I tried and failed w the Symantec removal tool and the symantec manual removal--no matter what I do I can't delete either infected file since they are already in use by another process (and I can't kill the right process, whatever it is).

am running Xp home edition w cable modem connection.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.

• Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
• Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Please check that when you post the log that the formatting is ok. Your log above is extremely hard to read with all the gaps between the entries.

The VundoFix.exe seems to have worked (?)--I had to reboot in the "middle" of the fix since HijackThis did not open once I'd run the KillVundo.bat. But the computer seems to be running up to speed again and Norton AV isn't showing me a Trojan.Vundo message anymore.

But ActiveScan found lots of problems and 5 of them were not disinfected--1 virus, 1 spyware, 3 adware.

I tried to post all three logs in one message here but I got an error message saying my post was too long. So in the this message I will post

I tried to eliminate all extra spaces from the log files--hope these are easier to read, if not sorry!

Can you please do the following.

Go to your Control Panel and double click on the Sun Java icon and locate the 'cache' button and clear the cache.

Now, let's open a command prompt by going to the start menu and then select 'Run'.

In the box that pops up type in 'cmd'. The command prompt will open.

OR

You can go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt. Unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32 /u gebyy.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save typing them in.

here's what's happened with your latest protocols:

1. Sun Java cache cleared

2. command prompt attempt to unregister regsvr32 /u gebyy.dll
returned this message: "gebyy.dll was loaded, but the DllUnregister Server entry point was not found. Thisfile cannot be registered."

3. when I ran HijackThis, 6 of the 8 entries you listed for me were present. But when I clicked "Fix Checked" I got the following (not sure if it applies to all 6 or not):

"Unexpected error occurred!
Error #52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath(?.exe).

Please send a report to [email protected], mentioning what you were doing, and what version of Windows you have."

4. deleting files and folders:
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint folder found & successfully deleted
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyy.dll was not present

will now reboot and send you the new HijackThis log.

It looks like you are reinfected. There were two Vundo entries in your log, with only the one of them showing the 'MSEvents' in the 02 line. Sometimes the initial fix will suffice, sometimes not.
Can you please repeat the steps given in post #2 but this time enter the following files when needed, in the order given;

C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvvw.dll

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wvvwa.dll

Fix these lines with hijackthis;

sigh? I hope this doesn't mean the virus isn't removable--is that likely?

computer is working great now so I'm happy enough to keep poking at it this way if your generosity extends that far. just hoping it doesn't end in a reformat.

Active Scan found 2 viruses, 2 adware items & 1 spyware item--but no Trojan.Vundo.

also, maybe important: when I run the KillVundo.bat, each time it looks like it is finished, or almost finished, but then a Norton Anti-Virus auto protect file pops up & says malicious script is being blocked. That's in safe mode, so there's no Norton auto-protect icon in the system tray to de-activate, and when I open task manager there's a very small list--& none of the items are ones I recognize as Norton AV processes. So maybe that is gumming things up & there's some way I can kill the Norton AV in safe mode before running the bot? (I notice in the Active Scan results that there's an awvvt.dll listed even though the bot supposedly deleted it at the same location). If so how do I get Norton auto-protect not to run in safe mode?

(So far the bot has never worked the way you say it's supposed to--where after it runs it automatically opens HijackThis.)

With the reg entry, we will need to know where in the registry it is found. Is activescan giving you a file name?

got rid of the file in the CONTENT.IE5 folder by clearing the temporary files cache from w/i the program.

re the registry entry what it says is:

Go here http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/ and download, unzip and run the Registry Search Tool. Type virtumonde in the dialog box. Let it run and after a few minutes, a prompt will appear. Click OK to write the results to Notepad and post them here.

At the moment I would just put it down to a false positive. You could try a registry cleaner maybe? Other than that, I can think of nothing else.

also: Norton scan found more adware, which it can't delete. It's called ADWARE.CDT and it's located at C:\Program Files\support.com\backup\59\590DE8D5d01

Norton wouldn't delete it but I just deleted by hand.

question: a couple of the online scanners you recommended--esp. the Trend Micro, not so much the Active Scan--run really slowly if Norton auto protect is on, so I disabled auto protect (but kept the Zone Alarm firewall active). So: is it worth running the Trend Micro scan if I have to do that, or is it likely to create more problems than it eliminates? (Active Scan seems to zoom along fine w Norton auto protect still enabled).

also: I usually run: Norton AV auto-protect; the Microsoft beta spyware detector (but I sometimes alternate this w Pest Patrol); and Zone Alarm (but this frequently slows my computer down a lot, though often things run fine; when it's too slow I close it and just re-enable the windows default firewall, which I know doesn't check outgoing traffic). is this a pretty good suite of programs? do you have other recommendations?

Easycleaner is pretty good, as is registry mechanic. 1st is free.
I personally prefer Sygate firewall over ZoneAlarm. Don't have any problems with it.
Other than that I would use another browser where you do not have to run any real-time antispyware tools :).
I use Opera with just an AV and a firewall. Never had any serious nasties, just a few cookies.
If you are concerned about the length of time Trend is taking, do not worry about it. There a a few others you can use :).

I did a scan w Easy Cleaner & it found something like 318 invalid entries. I've created a system restore point, & in Easy Cleaner there's an UNDO function.

do you think I should just go ahead and delete all 318 invalid entries and hold my breath?

I have had absolutely no problem with deleting everything that EZ cleaner finds. As you say, there are also backups created :).

so far so good w EZ Cleaner--no problems yet after deleting bad registry entries.

question about Sygate PF: I installed it & like it. but apparently I can't update the signatures unless I buy the pro version (I can get updates of the program itself, but not of the signatures). Is that right, do you know?

no that's fine! I'll just see how much I like the program; it doesn't seem to slow down the computer the way Zone Alarm often does, and it's probably not so good an idea to turn off Zone Alarm and just enable the built-in Windows firewall when that happens, which is what I've been doing. So I'll probably pop for the pro version of the Sygate.

Hope this thread is still active & that you will read this (if no response I'll start a new thread).

I popped for the Panda Platinum 2006 security suite (for 3 months), which is pretty comprehensive. Trying to update to new version I encountered an installation problem which I'm hoping you can help me solve.

(I'll explain why I'm updating to new version, which is a goofy story, briefly at bottom of this email).

anyway I'm trying to update to version 10.01.00, I think it is, from 10.00.00 (installation file is called platis2006).

installation program wants me to delete the program "eTrust EZ Antivirus," which is one of the anti-virus programs you guys told me to use. But the program doesn't appear in my Control Panel add/remove programs list--because I don't actually have the program on my computer, I just installed the activex control that allows the program to run. (I also installed activex controls not only for the streamlined online versus of Panda Active Scan, but also the BitDefender and TrendMicro programs you suggested--so I suspect that once I manage to remove the activex control for EZ Antivirus the Panda Platinum 2006 installation might balk again and ask me to remove Bitdefender and TrendMicro programs as well, which would mean again learning how to delete their activex controls (I'm assuming!), since those programs are also not on my drive and don't appear in add/remove programs.

btw I'm guessing here, that in each case it's the activex controls that I need to learn how to uninstall.

(odd thing is, I can reinstall the earlier version of Panda Platinum2006, which I downloaded and installed last week, just fine; it's just the newer version which I downloaded and tried to install today that demands I get rid of EZ Antivirus. so at least I'm protected again having re-installed older version of program).

(silly story: why install newer version: they garbled my order and I could not register the version I originally downloaded though I could update it; but I couldn't do other stuff like configure update options etc w/o a username and password, which I couldn't get. The product is great but the support is awful, so it took around 8 emails back and forth, in circles, before I finally got someone to send me the bleepin username and password. HOWEVER, these will only work if I download the newer version of the program. good side is that while I bought the product for 3 months [for $25 U.S.] they are throwing in an extra 3 months free for my troubles--another reason I want to update as I'm pretty sure that only applies to new program--username and passwords don't work when I paste them in to older version)

I fixed the line you name above w hijackthis, and I still get the same error message about the installation conflicting w "eTrust EZ Viruscan"--perhaps I deleted the activex control for either Bitdefender or TrendMicro online scan? which I'd probably need to delete anyway? (As before, while I can't install the newer program file I can re-isntall the older one w/o conflict, so I'm still ok for the moment but still want to switch to the newer version for reasons mentioned yesterday.

more or less unrelated issue. The "help and support" file, or whatever file would be opened by clicking on that, seems to have gone missing or corrupt: clicking on that option in start menu doesn't open the help and support window. I have an emachines computer here at home and I THINK that my computer has an emachines-modified, proprietary version of "help and support" rather than the default windows one, though I can't remember for sure. Also my computer came with an emachines proprietary restore cd and no Windows Xp cd.

I did a chat w an emachines guy who first told me to reformat the system (!) but then said I should try the Run command "sfc/scannow", which didn't run, so I tried just "sfc" which did run but on reboot didn't fix anything.

any idea how I can get my "help and support" stuff to work again? I do actually use it from time to time when I've got a problem, or to make a new Restore Point or access an old one, etc.

can run a new hijackthis if you want but the problem predates the one I pasted in right above which I ran a few minutes ago.

thanks for all your help again, btw. how to repay? I could recommend a really good Australian zen teacher, but you're probably not in the market for one--?

That is strange as the only reference to Etrust was that Active X. Perhaps you can use a registry search tool to see if there are any references to Etrust in the reg.

Go here http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/ and download, unzip and run the Registry Search Tool. Type Etrust in the dialog box. Let it run and after a few minutes, a prompt will appear. Click OK to write the results to Notepad and post them here.

I believe that running sfc/scannow may require you to have the XP CD available if the files are not found in your dll cache.
Try running it again with the spacing correct. sfc /scannow
