My Linksys Wired BEFSR41-Version 3.1 router keeps disconnecting.

Greetings!

I have a Linksys wired router. Its model is BEFSR41 and it is for cable or DSL. Its version number is 3.1 and it has four ports in the back. I have 4 connections to this router and they are a 2.4 GHz Hewlett Packard Laptop with XP Home OS only about 1 1/2 years of age and a Sony Play Station2 with an online game named Final Fantasy and its about 2 years of age or more and a 1.9 GHz Hewlett Packard Desk Top PC with XP Home OS about 1 year of age and a Compaq 900 MHz Desktop PC with XP Home OS about 3 years of age.

Often when we have all four machines connected and downloading files and connected to a multitude of web sites, the Play Station has a pattern of disconnecting from the internet and my son yells at me as if it's my fault. (since I inhereited the postion of Network Admin. at my home<smiles>)

Maybe there is a setting that I can adjust in the router's software that will stop this. Can you properly address this problem? I do thank you very much for your help!

I can't find a setting to adjust the DMZ Host on my router. The instructions at the web page that you suggested apply to the older routers that are Version 1 series BEFSR41. Mine is a Version 3.1 and relatively new. Any more help on this?

Do you see a Applications and Gaming tab? There is a online manual that you might find useful on the BEFSR41. Click User Guide under More Information in the right column of the page.

Well, following the link I gave. Did you input the IP Address you assigned to your PlayStation®2 that was listed in step 8?

Step 8? I'm in the router's gaming setting area and I see no way to arrive at step 8 because i have not performed any settings yet....remember, the first link that you gave me does not apply to my router and the second link does but i see no links about how to set up a play station on the 2nd web page that you gave me .....I have not gotten to step 1 yet , at the 2nd web page that you gave me....what now?

I am looking at the user's guide that i downloaded. There is a section about Applications and Gaming. I'll see what I can find in there. I may still need your help later so I hope you're near your CPU. Much Thanks for your input and help with this :)

In the Application and Gaming section, I don't know what to put in the settings to complete the following instruction that I read in the user guide;

"Enter the number/s or range/s of external port/s that will be used by the application."

About how many external ports does an ordinary CPU have? This question is very complicated to me. I'm not sure how many port numbers to put in the settings. Can you help me understand where and/or what these "external port/s" are?

Ok, here's the problem that i'm having now....apparently my router can not (or is not) handling the load that we are putting on it by using just one computer and one sony playstation2....my son plays final fantasyXI and there are many players connected to his play station2....when i play online games, i also have many players connected to my computer....apparently all of these connections are crashing our network.....do you know how i may adjust the settings in this router so that these gaming situations will not crash our network?

Have you updated the firmware? Here's a link to the most recent which is about a year old. If you open the main setup page at http://192.168.1.1 somewhere on that main page the firmware version will be shown.

I have the same problem with my router, it disco's from the internet and i have to unplug it thru power connection on back of the router then it pops back on. Its not the traffic load that is crashing your system its cheap Tiawan parts in the router that is defunct. I have 14 computers connection to this router, thru my Virtual Network. Trust me it can take whatever you throw at it up to 250 systems.

On another note -> Its not the router that gives you bandwidth its the Cable/DSL modem & Your telephony/Rg-6 connection that determines your speed and load into the internet. You could be simply over powering the PS2 or the modem. An ideal Server is a str8 thru 2mb up/down dedicated connection. Most, if not all cable internet providers provide Fractional meaning you share the bandwidth with whoever is in your bubble of dhcp network they have you listed in on their network (cable provider). I know DSL has packages available for T1 to T3 true dedicated bandwidth, but that costs about 500.00 to 750.00 a month. Those are ideal for a Gaming HOST computer.

The area he was talking about in Gaming & Applications its right under that title bare to the far right hand (upper right corner) its nearly invisible but it says "DMZ" Click it. Set it too Enabled - its disabled by default. put the ending IP octet to which computer is going to be acting as the Host or Server for the games. like the PS2 IP like 192.168.100.1 or whatever your IP address is for the Sony.

Will you tell me what brand of router that I should buy? What type do you use? You have 14 CPUs connected to your router, thru your Virtual Network? How can I make my network a Virtual Network? You say that your router disconnects but then you say that it can take whatever I throw at it, up to 250 systems. Which is it? Does your router handle the 14 to 250 systems without disconnecting("you said it can handle 250 systems")but then you said it disconnects and you have to pull the power cord out of the back and then it pops back on. I appreciate your help with this. But please explain your letter a little more because it's confusing me what you are telling me there.

Yes I have updated the firmware.
After I updated the firmware, it was just as bad as before I updated the firmware. Thank you for your help with this and if you think of additional hacks, let me know , please !

The Router itself is the BEFSR41 V 3.1 Sorry for the confusion.

Yes, the router is handling my DHCP network. It can handle up to 250 IP addresses. It is currently handling my entire ethernet all 14 systems meaning 14 IP addresses for Internet and I have a 24 port Switch connected to the Router thru the uplink on the back of the router. That is how it routes to more than just four ports.

I have it acting as a Print Server as well, I have one hardline for 3 printers running thru the router, a 3com 10/100MB 24 port Switch, and my cable modem.

I dunno if you understand that. I don't know how to explain it in normal terms.

According to what you have posted, if you are using the Uplink Port, the port closet to it will be disabled meaning you now have a three(3) port switch on the router, not a four. Is the Playstation connected to that port?

if you got the money the Cisco 1751-V modular access router does it all.

Its a very nice Toy for your network. However it is not wireless. They do not make things this good; wireless. :)

my other router had an uplink port but this model only has 5 ports on the back....4 of them are numbered 1,2,3,4 and the other one is named "internet" port and that "internet" port is the one that is connected to the cable modem....the other 4 ports are connected to 3 computers and one Sony PlayStation2 ....the PlayStation is connected to port # 1....

The PS2 connected to Port #1 is disabling Port #2.

Thanks, JM, but the PS2 in Port #1 is the machine that is being disabled. The computer in Port # 2 is working fine. Will you elaborate further on your diagnosis? If a PS2 has a reputation for disabling the port that is directly next to it, what can be done to these PS2's to stop this evil behavior?Thank you very much for your help with this matter.

It's not a behavior of the PS2, any device would do it if the port is labeled an UpLink Port and it sounds like your is not. Do you have the same computer always connected to the #2 port? If so, I would look for a driver update for that card and or a bad cable.

What happens if you swap what's plugged into 1 and 2? (PS2 into #2 and computer into #1). Does the PS2 work now? What about the computer?

the ISP service technician came out to our home and discovered that the signal splitter needed to be replaced.....when that was done, the problem disappeared....thank you all for your compassionate help with this matter!

Splitters are usually bad news unless you have an amplifier in the line also.
