GRRRR - a virus has disabled explorer.exe >:-(
Hi, all . . .
Thanks again, AnneMarie. Yes, C-A-D did bring up the Task Manager, but when I first typed in explorer.exe for a new task, it didn't work. Turns out it was expecting the full path including the drive letter, i.e. C:\Windows\explorer.exe.
Unfortunately, as soon as it ran, an antivirus window came up, declaring "While opening the file C:\Windows\explorer.exe, a virus was identified: Win32/Beavis.4350 ."
Does this indicate that the virus is somehow attached TO the explorer.exe file ? When I asked my antivirus to delete the file or put it in the "Vault", it said my system might not operate correctly. That seemed to suggest that the file "explorer.exe" itself, and not just the virus, would be quarantined or deleted (depending on my choice).
As it is, I DO have a desktop with icons and bottom bar, etc. But with explorer.exe under 'house arrest', nothing will work right, including MSIE or my HJT utility (they refuse to even start up).
* * * The big question of the day is, if this is the case and I cannot even open a browser, how am I supposed to visit sites such as TrendMicro, Norton, AVG etc. to get more detailed info on eradicating this Beavis virus ? Much less download an executable fix that sometimes is available to perform an 'exorcism' . . .
Awaiting the sage advice of the a.v. wizards . . . thanks again to all for the help and comments so far.
Sincerely,
- Dave
