Probably a number of ways. What Operating system are you using & what are the general system specs?
Im using windows 98
GenuineIntel Pentium(r) II Processor Intel MMX(TM) Technology
128MB RAM
84% system resources free
Im not sure if that will help
Clicvk Start --> Run --> type MSCONFIG --> click OK click Startup tab (top right corner) remove check marks according to what is necessary. Use this site for reference to determine what is required according to your system.
With win98 you can get some of that 128Megs back. Go here first..

And follow the instructions to find out what programs you have starting up when you boot your PC. Odds are there are a few that don't need to be there. Depending on what's there you can pare off 5 to 20 megs right off the top.
EDIT-- darn these slow fingers.. both sites are good and might have something the other doesn't. :)
EDIT2- also worth mentioning... system resources aren't a measure of memory. 84% is good anyway so don't expect that to change much if at all after you've stopped programs from loading. Use Taskmanager to view memory usage.( rt. click the taskbar & select task manager)
I went to systen info and checked the memory there and for some reason there are bunch of repeats (video card, systemboard) I was wonder if that was normal. I cant seem to figune out what is using my memory Its at the point where i cant even scandisk or defrag
Are you confusing memory with hard drive usage? Open windows explorer (file explorer) and right click your C drive and select properties. What are the stats for used vs unused space? (how large is the drive?)
used 579mb
Free 36.6 gb
The message i get when i try to defrag or scan disk is:
Scandisk could not continue because your computer does not have enough available memory. If any other programs are running, quit one or more of them, and try running scandisk again.
The programs i have running when i push ctrl-alt-del
explorer

Boot to DOS and type scandisk /autofix from the C prompt. Then boot to either safe mode and run Defrag.
Ok did the scandisk in dos no errors. I tried to defrag in safe mode get the same message. Is there a program that will let me erase my memory then format my comp?
I tried formating my computer the other night and did a clean install and kept getting the same messages
Try using this substitute Windows (ME) defrag program. It's much better.

Thanx.
But is there a program that will let me clear my memory? I just tried to install windows me and it tells me i dont have enough memory.
No there isn't a program that will do that. We have to find out why you're getting those error messages and fix the problem.
Are you saying that you downloaded that little defrag program and when you tried to open it or install it you got the same low memory message?
If you just did a clean install of Windows the other day as you say (and having only approx 500megs of used space on the drive confirms it's a new(ish) installation) then you should't be having memory issues.
Look again in Windows Explorer and see if you have two Windows directories. I'm wondering if you accidentally did a side by side install of Windows rather than over the top.
I only see one windows dir is there another way to check or something i should be looking for?
The error is caused because the Cluster size on your partition is invalid in relation to the size of the partition.
Did you just install a new drive?? And, use a ghost-like utility to copy the files over from the old one?
Your options are to use Partition Magic to resize the clusters, or to tear down and rebuild/reload the partition.
Ok so i used partition magic and did a clean format on the drive it seemed to fix the problem.
Thanx for all the help guys/girls
There was no need to do the reformat (in case this ever happens again). You just have PM do a resize on the clusters and then all is well again.
Did you get that info from system info? Because my system info says I have that too, but I know my computer is actually a 566celeron.Quote:
