VHS to DVD
Hi All,
I am trying to set up a friends machine (home build AMD system) to allow him to copy his VHS tapes on DVD's.
Playback should be via regular DVD players (not PC's).
Q1: What capture card (Hauppage, ATI etc.) and DVD burner (Lite-On ?) do you recommend, and which output format should be used ?
Q2: What else is required to get these connected (particularly the VHS to PC part) ?
Q3:Which software for copying/editing do you recommend ?
Thanks,
KGG

... just to clarify ...
I have read through the various posts on this forum on the same or similar subjects.
The general procedure and requirements are clear from that. Thanks. And he does not want to use a direct VCR device.
What I am looking for here, is actual make and model hardware recommendations and practical tips where people ran into issues hooking up devices, copying problems&resolve tips etc.

Hi K G G,,I do quite a bit of copying from 'home grown' vhs tapes to both vcd and now dvd. I have the ATI AIWonder 8500DV card. It's been around for a' couple of years now,but does the job very well.If you go ATI,the one I would now choose is this one:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...102-274&depa=0
If you want a bit more power for gaming and such, but,of course,at more bucks then this one:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...102-352&depa=0
As far as software is concerned,I use the MMC(Multi Media Center)from ATI. You need to be careful however,on what version of MMC to use. DO NOT use a version below 7.6. I find that the 8.7 version does the best job for me. The latest at ATI is 9.1. I tried it,but it errored out on the TV program,so no capture possible.Older versions are still available from ATI,if the one you want is not on the disk that came with the card.
No experience with add-on cards, but have heard good things about Hauppage. But not cheap by any means.
A very good tutorial on capturing can be found at Lord Smurf's site: http://www.digitalfaq.com/capture/avivsmpeg.htm
Good read on what resolution and sound presets to use. His tutorials are dn/loadable in pdf also...
I use Nero6 (vision express feature) to transcode and burn to dvd and it's very easy to use.
Hope this helps a' bit...:)

Thank you Ridgerunr,
Good reads in that digitalfaq. I am learning this also as we go to help my buddy.
Right now there is a 7x00 Radeon card in it (don't know exactly), and he's not into heavy gaming.
So the Q is whether to replace it with an AIW or simply use an add-on card.

Sound problem...
We put an ATI TV WONDER PRO into his W2K machine, everything is updated, sound is via AC97 (onboard), BUT...
- when running TV sound is fine
- everywhere else sound is fine
- when capturing TV (or other source), all we get is pictures, no sound.
Any ideas ?

Hi Nix - I have actually seen the other posts, and read through the ones I found when searching here for capturing & sound problems.
But - I am out of ideas. I have the PC here next to me (second setup), and am watching TV WITH sound just fine. But when capturing, I see the TV pic , however there is no sound.
HW & cables are obviously fine, as I have TV playback through the o/b sound right now. Why would I not hear anything when capturing?

A little more info:
- directX 9.0c
- latest codecs from M$ installed
- Nero 6 with all available updates
- BIOS updated
- W$ updated
Still no sound within Nero, only via ATI playback.

Hi... just on my way out and had a fast look at this thread.... see this thread and see if your sound needs to be hard patched the same way.

Thanks for checking in fink.
Yep - the capture card is hardpatched from it's out to the o/b line-in. It works with the TV just fine. I.e. the whole line coaxcable-->Tunercard-->o/b line-in-->speakers appears correct.
Just no sound when switching to "capturing".

Using the AIW card, not familiar with the MMC that comes with the add-on card. But when you have it open to view TV,have you gone into the 'settings' option and checked to see if the preset your using for capture shows the sound capture properly? Such as: Audio: 48.000 KHz, 16Bit, Stereo ...
-
Double check in the windows sound mixer that in capture mode the particular input sound source (line-in it sounds like) is not muted and the volume level is up (master volume as well).

Here we go..
Okay Guys,
Here's the updates:
When viewing TV, The PVR settings show:
MPEG2
720x480 NTSC 525
8.00 M Bit/sec
48.000 Khz, 16 Bit, Stereo
The sound levels on both, playback & recording, are selected fro Line-In, with volumes all set close to hightest
In the meantime, I have disabled the AC97 o/b sound and installed a Soundblaster SB Live 5.1. No problems here and sound is fine during regular music (and TV) playback.
When capturing with MMC (TV playback window) I hear the sound, but when playing back the capture, there is no sond to be heard. Interestingly, the MUTE button on the TV screen does not work either.
Any ideas? I am adding gray hairs by the second now..
:( :( :(

UPDATE
Finally Got It !!!
I don't exactly know how, or which combination, but after adding the SB LIVE 5.1 card there were a few more options selectable for the audio handling.
Together with ATI's online FAQ's I think I found the right way, or at least a working solution.
The key to solve this was the hint coming from the non-working mute/sound feature in ATI TV WONDER - TV playback.
Once I solved that (and updated my brains out of everything), I was finally able to capture live TV WITH sound.
Playback works in three different players (Nero, M$ MediaPlayer and ATI MMC).
Hope that does it and I do not need to fix this PC ever again ;)
Cheers,
KGG

Glad to hear you got it solved, but don't envy what you had to go through :( I use the Voyetra-Santa Cruz sound card and never had a problem with it picking up sound from whatever video format I captured. Just lucky I guess...
-
One of those funky combinations of settings make it either work like a charm or quiz you forever...
I remember trying the Voyetra-Santa Cruz at some point in time, but did not like the sound all that much.
But I went from NERO to using MMC due to you RR - so if something comes up now - I'll give my buddy YOUR email :D:D - j/k
Thanks for your help.
