Trillian users unite
I need your help!! I download and installed Trillian but have no idea how to set it up and use it.
First question is: Do I have to have accounts from Yahoo :( and AIM (no way, not on my computer). Reason I am asking is, when installing Trillian, it asked me what my user name was for both of these accounts, including ICQ. I thought Trillian was supposed to just let me contact those friends of mine who use these programs. So, please dear friends....come to my aid cause I really don't see any difference if I too have to install those other messengers.

I've never used Trillian, but I found this User Manual. See if this is helpful.
From the manual: "Other chat client software does not need to be installed to connect, but you will need an account for each medium you want to use."

The FAQ link at the top will take you to their forum site.

Thanks Duane. This makes no sense to me whatsoever. I have no accounts for AIM or Yahoo and do not ever intend to have one either. Guess I'll uninstall Trillian.

You can set up a Yahoo account on their website. You don't have to install their chat software, just set up an account and logon with Trillian using that Yahoo login info and start adding your friends to Trillian's Yahoo list.
Right click on the AIM icon on the Trillian window. Click on Connection Manager then click on "Create AIM account." That opens a web page where you can set up an account without having to install the actual messenger.
Since I don't have any friends using AIM, I couldn't check any further to see how to add people to the AIM list, though.

Thanks Miz. If I get this set up, my daughter wants to add Trillian also because she has each one of the messengers installed and wants to get away from having to have all of them booting at start up. ;)
-
It was a bit simpler for me,because i'd gone thru the whole chat rat race a' long time ago. Luckily,i'd saved my user name and password(s). So all I had to do was enter the info with the Trillian setup wizard. But as Miz says, just setup your accounts online and you should be good to go. If you have a hotmail acct.,you can use your hotmail addy and password to access the MSN chat also...

Thanks Ridge. I have MSN Messenger 6.02 now. May get rid of it once I get Trillian set up. :D
-
You don't need accounts for each service -- I only have MSN, AIM and ICQ accounts. Just skip past the ones you don't have during the setup wizard. You can tidy things up later with the Preferences menu anyway.

Thanks Tuttle. I probably will set this up tonight when things are calm here. ;)

Okay problems arise with Trillian. Now need help. I set this up today and added my contacts for each IM I have. Upon trying to contact a friend, it says they are offline when in fact I know they aren't because they are using MSN and I had mine connected, it shows them online. And according to Trillian, that IM is connected through there. Why are my contacts/friends showing offline in Trillian?
-
MSN stores the contacts on its server, not on each individual client. If your MSN contacts didn't all automatically appear, you probably made a mistake when setting up the MSN account in Trillian.
-
Thanks Tuttle. I didn't know msn keeps them on their server. :( And yes, it probably was my mistake in setting up msn yesterday, I'm going to give it another go later today. I think I had my password for msn wrong and couldn't remember it, so last night I reset it with msn. Will try that.

Ok everyone who helped. Trillian is working now. I had to reset my password for MSN then reboot computer. Simple, huh? :D
-
MSN needs your hotmail addy to access. Have you tried accessing your hotmail using Trillian? If you have the proper address and password entered it should go directly to your mailbox...
edit: Oops,,posting at the same time. Makes 'my' question moot.:D

Actually Rigde, I don't have a .....@hotmail account. I opted to use my real email address to sign up with .net passport.
Now though, I'm having a problem with AIM not signing in because it says my password or some such crap isn't right. And a user I accidently didn't add right, isn't working in msn on trillian. So, I still have some work to fixing and fine tuning.
-
let me get this strait ... your using trillian for aim only?
if so ... why not just use aim+?
-
No I am using it for three different IM programs. And if it came to having to have AIM on my computer to chat with family and friends, then I just would not chat. I will put nothing on my computer that relates to AOL in any sense.
And I've finally got it set up correctly.
-
Sorry about the confusion, glad to hear you have it up n' runnin' tho'...;)

I figured it all out, and parts of it were user error, or not knowing how to set things up. One particular problem I had was with the font setting. I didn't realize the "send with message" had to be checked for each function I used. :D Fixed that. And my AIM kept telling me it couldn't connect, fixed that too, had two users in the connection manager, took out the one that wasn't for AIM.
