Hi,
I installed the E-trust antivirus from the securty update CD from MS. This supposed to be a 1 year free version. When I go to register it all I get is circle jerk around where I enter my E-mail and name --enter-- fill several other check marks--enter, back to the e-mail thing again. I went through this 4 times and still have not gotten it registered.
Anyone else have this problem?? If so what did you do to get it registered??

Don't quote me on this,but the offer was some time ago and it may 'now' be out of date. May be date stamped so people won't try to install over n' over again for longer free time.
Have you tried contacting C.A. by email?

Was messing around with my friends XP system, wondering why a game of his wouldn't load. Not knowing much about XP system processes I looked up a process called VetTray. The search results came up with BugBear Worm. I couldn't find search results giving me positive results.
His ETrust AV didn't detect anything. Downloaded Stinger, ran it in safe mode. Nuthin. Ran Housecall. Nuthin. Ran CW Shredder and had him Email me his HJT! log. Now that I get home and am looking at his HJT! log it seems that Etrust I installed on his system the other day is the program causing all the hubbub.
Also now that I am at home using Netscape's google rather than my friends MSN search I am getting positive search results for it. Sheesh. Man, the Housecall encyclopedia and Symantec site said VetTray was bad. Oh well, big misunderstanding. Just thought I'd let you guys in on my recently confusing experience. ;)

Well after trying for 2 days to get some feedbsck from CA and not getting anything, I am going to remove etrust from my machine and go back to AVG. At least there they respond to a question.

vet tray is the program that keeps etrust running in the task manager. i have used etrust for a long time even the pay version which is the same as far as i can tell and have no problems, unlike avg which was almost always a hanging application in my pc causing it to lag
Vetmsgnt will be found in services and is a main service of eTrust's install. The main file for it is in C:\Program Files\CA\eTrust~1\eTrust~1\ and is VetMsg.exe. There are several entries in this folder beginning with 'Vet'. I scanned each one with my eTrust 6.2 Beta and nothing was found related to viri,trojan,worm/dropper.
I therefore,would 'not' blame eTRust for harboring BugBear in it's own house. 'Vet Tray' will be found in the startup listing and is a main part of the AV program...
Yeah, I realize that now, although last night it did lead me on quite the merry chase. :)
PCMkinnie. When my neighbor installed E-trust we just bypassed all that E-mail registration c**p. I think it registers itself with the company. After a year on your hard drive I think is when it will ask you to register in ernest by email with your verifying code and your cash. For now just hit 'Cancel' or 'exit' on that email registration c**p and see if the puppy runs. :)
Even at $10 / year, it's a bargain. Been using it for several years with Windows ME and it hasn't caused a problem yet.
You may have it set to only scan files when they are accessed - I've had a couple of trojans end up in my TIF folder, etrust caught them when I went to empty them out or viewed the contents of the folder.
Very stable on my system, no experience with it with XP, though.

I had already removed it from this machine before the last 2 threads. I have it on CD as part of the Etrust CD sent to me by MS. I may change my mind and try it again in a couple of weeks.

Mac,,did you notice when you removed it,it actually 'removed' all of it? Unlike Norton and many others:rolleyes: Small footprint and unobtrusive. One of the reasons 'I' recommend it...:)
My eTrust found 4 infections in my Java deployment folder, which were still in a ZIP file fortunately. It didn't do anything about them except tell me they were there. I had to manually delete the ZIP file.

Zip files are sometimes a difficult thing to corner. Nearly all virus scanners can go into files and find bad stuff when using on-demand scanning but may not find the problem when just running the background, resident scanner.
A recent example for me was at our small office. We received a copy of the Beagle/Bagel virus for 2 users. The zipped virus attachment made it through the server's A/V, and also made it through the POP3 scanners on each PC. To make this all the worst was that there were 3 different brands of A/V scanners (the one on the server and 2 different brands on the PC's.) Thankfully, each PC's A/V stopped the file when opening the email itself.
Just for fun, I copied the attachment to a floppy and brought it home to see what my PC (with EZ A/V) would do with it. When I had the PC just look at drive A, eTrust didn't do anything. But as soon as I right clicked and told it to scan, it found it and deleted it. While I didn't have the courage to actually try to open the file, users of eTRust have many stories of how the A/V catches things when opening or saving files.
I have had experience with several A/V scanners (either here at home or at work) from McAfee, Norton, Panda, Trend Micro, AVG and eTrust. IMO, I am convinced that eTrust is right up there with the best. (An added bonus is the fact, as
Ridgerunr notes, that eTrust EZ A/V has a small system footprint. My PC barely knows it's there...)
OK I can understand it not detecting the stuff while running in the background. But why didn't it clean them off my system when it found them during the scan?
Because eTrust is an 'Anti-virus' program/cleaner and not a trojan cleaner. Oranges and apples here. But the fact that it 'found' and reported them is more than many AV programs can brag about. I found the exact,same trojans by way of Sun java on my PC a week or so ago. As i'm beta testing the new eTrust 6.2 program, I sent the results to CA. Haven't heard back yet,but i'm sure they will be in touch with Sun micro! Needless to say,I'm no longer using Sun java and have reverted back to msjvm until Sun plugs this hole(if possible)...
At one time a year or so ago,my online game playin' future son-in-law began having serious problems with his and my Daughter's PC. I took a copy of eTrust over and installed it. At first boot after the install, it stopped the GUI with a message box stating the MBR and possibly the EEPROM was infected with a worm.
As it turned out, the bios chip actually 'was' infected! I replaced the chip with one from BadFlash.com for a reasonable price and it saved their motherboard from the trash can. Even tho' it could not solve the problem,the fact that it recognized and reported it saved much time and $$$. I became a firm believer in eTrust after 'that' incident! :cool:

Seems SUN does have to answer a few questions.
Aren't trojans the same as viruses? Are there any progs that can actively scan for incoming trojans?
No, they are not the same.

Try "The Cleaner" by moosoft. At one time that was the best one out. Lost track in the last couple years though.

Does it guard in real time, like an a/v prog?
I've used the free version of SwatIt and it is very thorough with it's scans. It is not freeware however and has a 30 day trial. You can either purchase the pro version or buy the latest updates for usd$2.95 per month. It never found anything on my system,so i can't give it a 'real' rating. It doesn't work in 'real time' to find problems by itself as an AV program can/will. You have to run it along with other maintenance routines. When I download infected zip files, AVG's resident shield does not detect them. Probably because in Zip format they are dormant. However doing the full system/harddrive scan and AVG does find my pet Netsky Z I keep on my harddrive. It also does not automatically delete this. I think with AV programs, you just have to delete any ZIPs manually.
Ah OK. I sure hope eTrust can detect active trojans though.

A. With Real-Time scanning on, it will clean infected files as they are extracted from the archive (example: using Winzip) and accessed in any way, and therefore, before harm can take place. But your archives will not be reconstructed for you. If the archives are your own, recreate them from clean files. If they came with some software, you should possibly try to obtain a clean set from the source.

OK so what that means is if I had viruses within a ZIP and went to open it, eTrust would stop them as I opened them? That's cool.
Too bad you decided to do that. A couple of suggestions for the future. Most companies have FAQ sections on their websites. Also, eTrust has "Sammy" who is not quite as obnoxious as Microsoft's paperclip or wag-tail-dog.
You can click on Sammy the Safe and ask a question and get a knowledgebase answer or you can view the FAQ.
The problem you had is because of cookies. They tell you to use Tools, Internet Options, Delete Cookies. But you really don't need to do that or even want to do that.
If you are savvy, go to Windows\Local Settings\ or wherever your cookies are and find the cookies from ca.com.
Best bet is to visit the website and then close Internet Explorer. Then sort the cookies so the most recently viewed will be at the top. Then note that you have about four to six cookies from ca.com. Delete all of them.
Now go to my-eTrust.com and Log in using your email. Works great.
Also, those cookies expire in a few days, so you could just wait a week and try again.
The email business is admittedly a bit slow with eTrust. They usually do answer in about 24 hours and your email has a link to the website where your answer and links to helpful areas are posted.
Another alternative is to use McAfee and call the support 800 number and talk to a human who doesn't speak English -- no big deal! Maybe you don't speak English either!! but I find it helpful to be able to understand the guy.
By the way, when you DO get a virus and you need to install an update from AVG or whomever, and you can't install the update to remove the virus because you have to remove the virus first. etc. . . . .
Reconsider eTrust because unlike all the others, it WILL install on an infected machine and it will remove the infection on the fly.
