Intel Celeron.

Hi all, I am giving my nephew a HP Pavilion 6553. And I want to upgrade the cpu for him. I contacted HP tech support and they told me the highest cpu you I can put in here is a Intel Celeron 800mhz. Well this will be the first time I have bought a new cpu to put in a pc. Is there any certain type of Intel Celeron 800mhz I need to put in the pc or will any Intel Celeron 800mhz work? Also it came with 466mhz Celeron. Since the other one will put off more heat do I need to buy a new cpu fan and heat sink?

If your old heatsink/fan is aftermarket then it's probably fine since you're still going to be using socket 370. If not then the new CPU will probably have a fan with in anyway. If for some reason it doesn't I'd just get a new heatsink/fan that's way overkill, because overkill is good. Personally I wouldn't use the old stock heatsink/fan. If you just go with the heatsink/fan that comes with the new CPU then remove the thermal paste that comes stock and use Arctic Silver.

Thanks for the information. That link was good. I am going to get some Artic Silver. I might go ahead and buy a heat sink and fan for the cpu.

I contacted Hp technical support for a second time just to make sure how high of a cpu the board could support. The first about 2 months ago they told Intel Celeron 800mhz. But this time they told me Intel Celeron 500mhz. If its 500mhz I won't upgrade from 466mhz becuase it wouldn't matter. Can some one tell me what it can support? By the way the pc is an Hp Pavilion 6553 with an Intel i810 chipset.

You can upgrade to a Celeron 533mhz. But, there are 2 of them so choose carefully...one will work the other will not. Interestingly enough, I've found that the 466mhz is the best of this "bunch".

I searched Hp site for while and yea max is 533. But a friend of mine stumble across something called Power leap. He has the same pc. And Power Leap is adapter you put down after you remove old cpu then you put new cpu down. It supports up to 1.1 gig. Has anyone used power leap before? Will it cause any problems? It is a 25 US dollars adapter. Here is the website for it.

May I suggest switching from the celery to a regular intel cpu.
Believe me, you will see a difference.

Ok this seems like a good idea. The one you showed me was for a slot 1 but I have a slot 370. The one I found and the one my friend mention is this one. http://powerleap.com/NeoS370.html Why would I need this adapter. The adapter looks pretty basic. Did the slot 370 change and this is just an adapter to line up the pins. Hp says I can only use a celeron. I want to get a Pentium 3 for it. What I can't under stand if the Pentium 3 can fit a slot 370 and runs at the correct fbs. Why would I only be able to use a celeron.

The power leap site says that adapter can use a Pentuim 3 or Celeron. I found a Pentium 3 1.0 gig for 85 US dollars but I also I found a 1.0 gig Celeron for 35. I really don't have the cash for to afford the Pentium 3 plus the adapter:( But if I get celeron it would be faster than my pc that I use. And I could just keep the one I was going to give to my nephew and switch the parts. How will a celeron 1.0 gig compare to a 650 Pentuim 3? Would there be any difference. I wish I had the money just to build me one but I don't.

I've had 3 Celerons. I would stay away from them if at all possible----you can do much better. Just as an example, look below:

Well since I really don't want to put more money in to that old pc than I have to. I can get the Intel Celeron 1.0 100 fbs for 35 dollars plus the power leap adapter for 25. That should be a big improvement over the Intel Celeron 466 66 fbs. If it was my pc I wouldn't go for the celeron neither but just trying to give my nephew something with a lil bit more power for cheap since I won't really be using it. So in performance wise is it worth it?

Unless you mobo automatical or with a jumper can be switched to the 100FSB, it will still run at the 66.

Going up to a 1ghz celeron in that machine...will do it some good....but make sure you jump the ram up too....to say 256 megs minimum....

The motherboard can run either at 66 or at 100 fbs. I not for sure what the jumper might look like. Can someone so me a pic of a jumper? So I have an idea of what I'm looking for. I am going to put another stick of 128 in there. I should have one laying around here some where that should work for it. Also I am going to put my old pci Geforce4 Mx 440 in there so he can have something better than the on board video. I knew all them old parts would come in handy one day.;)

I was in the Hp bios and I seen something called Frequency Ratio. The description said select the internal frequency multipilier of cpu. I can tell it deals with the cpu but does it do? I could set it from 2x up to 8x.

the frequency is the multiplier you multiply that number times the front side bus to get the processor selection....for example 100mhz fsb x 8x multiplier = 800mhz

You've got a good working 466mhz and your thinking bout modding the main board just to get a bit better mhz? I hope this is a spare PC you can risk...
Based on what you have posted you should be able to run a cel at 8x66fsb(533) or maybe a Pent at 8x100fsb (800mhz)
But get a cpu that fits the socket.

The adapter was so big, it hit some capacitors , so to get it to seat right, he had to do some modification work to it.

Ok. I do not want mod the mobo. But I went by the Intel website and check to see the highest cpu the board can take. Well there are 6 different models of the i810 mobo but all of them supported up to atleast Pentuim 3 800 mhz. So basicly intel says it can take up to 800 mhz pentium but Hp tells me it can't. So I'm confused.

Ok my nephew got a computer of a friend for 50 dollars and its better than this one. I was offered a Pentuim 3 933 mhz for free. What I am looking to do is build an extra pc with the parts from the Hp. Here is what I reuse.

128 meg sd ram
pci ethernet card
pci graphics card
pci sound card
cd rw drive
floppy drive
20 gig hd
Pentuim 3 933 mhz socket 370
And of course the key board etc..

So basicly what I am looking for is a Bare bone kit with no intergraded parts on mobo. Any one know a site that would have one that I could reuse these parts in.

Ok I have made a second pc mainly for work. Intel did make Socket 370 PPGA cpu up to 1.1 in Celeron form only. But you have to have a front bus of 100 mhz to run them after Celeron 533. Luckly this old machine has supports 100 mhz. Basicly can get some more time out fo this pc. It working much faster now. I bought the celeron 1.1 gig off of ebay for 5 US dollars and another stick of 128 for 2 dollars. Not to bad for 7 dollars. If you are to buy one for an old pc make sure it runs off of coppermine.
