Stupid Sp1
Hi all, I looked around for weeks trying to get the XP USB2 Patch drivers, but Microsoft idiots would not let any one download it without SP1 or SP1a........
So in the End I had to give in and I Installed the Dreaded Poxy SP1.......
Well, funily enough, it went great n without a Hitch....BUT......It left me with bad things i Never had Before or never wanted...Fixed some, some not yet discovered, but my worst NightMare haS STARTED......My 48x24x48x Lite-On CDRW Writer was the FASTEST Riper, Reader, Player, NOW it's The Ruddy SLOWEST because of this SP1....My Photo Tiff Files on CDR takes 5 Years to Open instead of 2 seconds.......Do Any of You Know of a Patch or Reg Hack to get it back to its FAST State......My DVDRom Drive was Darn Slow at 4x now its FASTER.....It's CRAZY.....PLEASE HELP SOON.......THANKS ALL....

Did you only download SP1a? Or, did you download all of the Critical Updates, Hotfixes and Security Patches for XP? Here is the Update Rollup1 for XP.

Hi DuaneB.....Was going to put in SP1a but it said to stay on Internet when doing it....read that loads were haveing probs that way.........LOADED SP1 thats it at moment...There be 254Mbt of Updates n Patches if I put them all in......(That's Ruddy Crazy) (has Micro gone CRAZY)..So at moo I am trying to Decide which are the Best ones to Install. But Need to Sort out this Lite-On CDRW thats Slowed Down because of SP1......I Have Downloaded "AUTOPATCHER XP for March" that has all Updates with it..Don't know how auto patcher works yet, so gota do some reading before decideing if it's best thing to use.........Over to U my Friend
-
The USB 2 support is in the SP1/1a update.

Most users choose the Express installation to update their personal computers. The download size varies, depending on how recently you have used the Windows Update online service. The typical 30-megabyte download will take approximately 90 minutes with a dial-up connection and a 56k modem, or 3-5 minutes with a broadband Internet connection.

Hi Train.....Everyone is Confuseing Me over this SP issue by typeing out SP1/1a.......It is either SP1 or SP1a, so PLEASE can U say, is it in SP1 or SP1a in plain English speak.......
So seeing as I have installed SP1, do I have to Install SP1a in order to upgrade this darn USB2!!........At least this SP1 is not as Bad as when I first did it a long while back....Then it gave me nothing but problems...lets hope my probs are small this time......
-
OK after reading from that Link U provided I do NOT need to install SP1a, So How Do I sort out my CDRW Writer!!.....
Found one more as well...Sorry!.......
My "PREFETCH FOLDER" Has VANISHED/Gone/Caput......Will that being gone have anything to do with my CDRW opening Tiff Photo files very very very SlooooooooWly!!!!!!!.....I Hate Microsoft.....
-
Yes it well could. See the first time it would take time to open the tif, then the second time it would read it from the prefetch whisc is much faster.
The SP1/1a means either of those two SP's have the stuff.
Now 1a was not out when I got my XP cd which has SP1 on it.
Some folks had downloaded it and burned it to cd. Made their own slip stream cds. Mine just happens to be a M$ one.
But later folks, like yourself, have to get 1A from the internet.
So either of them will work.
SP1a is just a modification to SP1 .
Now as for the cdrw, go into safe mode [F8 during bootup] and see what it says in device manager? Fact is remove all instances of it and reboot. Windows should then pick it up as new equipment, and install the drivers for it.
-
Well Train my friend, U on the Ball today..lol.....THANKS...
After reading your Link to Micro, I Updated 14 Critickal Updates n 1 usb.........Installed em...Probs was I had to do it via Internet, No Zip or exe to download for Slip Stream, Except SP1, which is next thing I need to Do...I have got a Back-Up of Everything on another Drive...Did it via Windows Backup......Anyway since Updates all my Shortcut Icons on taskbar for All My Drives would not Work, Had to spend 15 mins redoing em.....What a Waste of Time....
Any Idea of How/where I can get this PREFETCH folder from in order to Re-Install it!!.....Why The Hell cant Microsoft get their Act Together...I got enough to do without spending 1 to 2 days sorting this ****e out.....
Did Not do that in Safe Mode, Silly Me, did it via Desktop/windows......Shall Retry that in Safe Mode later.....THANKS...
-
-
Well m8, in Safe Mode most are in PIO MODE, at least first two are..In Windows it says Ultra DMA Mode 2 for DVDWriter, Multi Word DMA Mode2 for DVDRom & Ultra DMA Mode 2 for CDRW Writer....then Ultra DMA Mode 5 for Hard Disks.....
But this Gets Worse.......In Bios the First two say PIO Mode.....
Also my Shortcut Icons for the Writers n DVD Rom in Task Bar keep saying they be no Ruddy Good n wont work.....gota Replace them after every start-up......Gona Look see if I can find a PREFETCH FOLDER on my WinXP Disc to insert into Windows Folder...If Not, Its a Take OUT the PCI USB2, Put the 120Gbt HD back into the Tower n Conect it to the PCI ATA100 as a Master.....THEN.....Reformat n NEVER EVER INSTALL STUPID SP1 or any other SP EVER AGAIN...I got better things to do than Waste Days on this trying to sort it all out..Thanks MICROCRAP for Nothing but Probs.....I'm a Better Expert than them!!!!!!!....
Thanks Train....
-
I wonder if you had a bad download. Sure sounds like it.
That mode is normal in Safe mode. What ribbon are you using by the way?
-
80 Ribbon Cable is what i use....All this since SP1....
Looks like some don't get any problems, others have a few minor problems n others have All the Problems...Don't make sence to me..lol....That is why in the past I told u i would not install SP1 because it gave me Worse Probs before....Had to install this time if I want to use USB2.0......I think SP1 works better with either an Intergrated install with XP or just after installing XP, then Install All Drivers etc.,...Any Ideas on How I can Re-Install the "PREFETCH" Folder in Windows!!.....Thanks for the Help...

Late to the thread, but everyone wants to criticize Microsoft for having sercurity flaws but then when MS tried to improve the OS, patching, the complinsts starts flying.
Guys, you can't have it both ways.
Just wait for SP2 if you want to see some real changes in your system. Every security feature in XP will be turned on by default, as it should be.

SP2!!!!!!!! BETS that Will be Even WORSE than SP1/SP1a
The Beta Testers are already saying that Lots of Software Won't/Don't Work with it....So What's the Betting that Half the Drivers won't work Either!!!!!........My System was 99 n half%before Instalation of SP1, it is now 50% at moo.......So Who Do I Blame if Not Microsoft!!......This is a FARSE mun.....
Be Good.....
-
I have not fouond anything that doesn't work with SP2. I don't know who you've been getting this info from, but it just isn't so.
Programs here and there, sure, yes, but 50% of the entire MS suite. Thats a BIG stretch.
You could always go back to 3.1
-
Windows 3.1! Now there's a Thought!!...LOL
Well 50% was a bit of an exageration...But whether it be 50% or 90%, it's still not good enough for me, After All, Microsoft should get this correct first time, instead of messing it up every time....
Anyway, that's my gripe n I'm sticking to it...lol.....My prob is that I'm not a Techy kind of person (though I do try) n what seams Obvious to some, looks Difficult to me, so then I have to be a pain in everyones backside in order to try n sort it out....ThankFully, I aint the Only One!!!!..Now then! Photography n Horticulture is a different thing, I can help anyone out on them, just my cup of tea!
My Bigest Headache at moment is the Reading of my CDRs...If I can Sort that out with anyones Help, I will be a Happy Person:D
At moo I'm mad:mad: n confused:confused: that when I insert a CDR of my Precious photos its takeing an AGE to Show the Thumbnails n an Age to Open the Tiff Files....Thats in the DVDRom/CDRW Writer/DVDWriter...Use to be Nice n FAST...
Would it be Better if I changed things around n put NEC DVDWriter as Master on the Primary IDE 0 n put my C:with xp on, on the PCI ATA100 card....Will my System still start up n recognise my OS..Though I don't think that will sort out why they ALL be Slow in Reading n Opening my Tiff files......Any Ideas n Fixes Will be Appreciated........THANK YOU ALL for being Patiant n Helping me......
