I'm not able to access classmates.com. A bit of internet research suggests that many others have the same problem and it might have something to do with XP settings. Anyone have any info on this?
Thanks
KM

I get 'Page Cannot be Displayed' when i go there.
Is that what your getting?
Yes, that's what I get, too. I had assumed the site was down, but then I did a little searching on the net. Seems maybe the site is not down but that there may be a conflict with privacy/cookie settings in XP.
Ive had a look on google and it seems the only problems are actually within the site.
How long has it been like that? i dont use it so i wouldnt know.
The problem, from my perspective , has been going on for months. I upgraded from 98SE to XP nearly a year ago. I cant recall whether I ever logged on to classmates since the OS change. However, as you suggest, the problem may well be specific to the site.
It may well be the at the sites end, but i would wait for someone else, maybe with a different OS, who also uses the site.
Maybe they know.
I gave up on classmates.com several months ago. For me, it was because they required me to allow non-signed 3rd party cookies to be dn/loaded. Also, the notices for 'new classmates listed' was B.S. No thank you...
I posted a request at the W98 forum asking someone to try to access classmates.com. I just got a message back from zachary720 to say no problem reaching the site with W98. Interesting!
hi, I'm running win xp pro and just went to classmates.com with no problem
Now thats weird:confused:
I am running Windows XP Pro and I just went to
www.classmates.com/
No problem at all!
Creekman
I'm running XP HE and got another window up with classmates.com. No problems here.
I have Pro on the desktop system and Home on the notebook. I can't open the site on either. I'm not desparate, I just don't understand it.
I've ME and XP on the same computer, can access classmates.com from both OS's, both with Mozilla and Internet Explorer.
Only when I set the Internet Explorer security level to high in Windows XP I can't open the site anymore, doing the same thing in ME doesn't cause any problems.
Why are we double posting with this:
http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...hreadid=160557
After reading both posts it is obvious that the poster was looking for input from someone with a different operating system. Is this really worth complaining about? (and triggering email reply notifications)
Thanks for your reply Niels, you've answered Tjolly's question succinctly. I couldn't have said it better myself.
Cheers
KM
Yes it is. It's double posting on one subject.Quote:

If you had a problem with internet software and you were running Win98 would you post in both forums just to be on the safe side?
Double posting causes confusion.
OK, first of all, my apologies to Tjolly - I'm sorry that you're confused.
Now, while my instinct tells me perhaps I should ignore the issue Tjolly's brought into this thread, I do think it's an important one and it merits some discussion. Niels is correct that I "was looking for input from someone with a different operating system". My post in W98 forum was brief, referred to my XP post and provided a result that I brought back to the XP forum. I think it was a reasonable strategy in addressing the original issue posted in this thread. What I would like to know is whether I'm really guilty of "double-posting"? Honestly. I don't think I am.
The irony of this whole thing is that I'm certain that classmates.com is hardly worth the effort to get to. Its only because I can't access it that I feel compelled to.
KM
Pse. don't be sarcastic in your response. I am not confused, I noticed the double post and one of the rules of Vdr is that you do not double post. Pse. note I used the word confusion not confused.Quote:

Double posting is one of the forum rules, and can cause confusion.
When i answered your first post in xp, and i said you should wait for someone that does access the site and maybe has a different o/s i didnt mean posting in another forum, as you do not know if it has to do with either 98 or xp.
As youve seen some people can access it with 98 and some can access it with XP so there must be another issue here other than which OS is being used.
What that is i dont know.
Just sourced that site.
script language="javascript"
cookies have to be enabled
Without both enabled, you do not get there.
that classmates link opens fine for me.
OK, I give.
I've deleted the offending duplicate post in the W98 forum.
My genuine and humble apologies to Tjolly for my sarcastic remark.
Thanks to Train for that bit of info, although no matter how I adjust my browser settings I still can't access the classmates site .
Do you have a Host folder? Just plain Host, not Host.sbs.sig as a example. So you have to be able to see the extentions.
Thanks Train. I did a search but couldn't find a folder called "host".
Thinking you had a host foler with that website listed in it.
Might look in your restricted sites in IE for that addy.
I've tried adjusting all the privacy/ security settings, allowing sites, enabling cookies etc. Nothing. Something comes to mind - I have DLink wireless router. I don't know if it might be blocking some sites. Although I think I was having the problem before I got the router. I'm going to log off for the night. Thanks again for your help.
Might try bypassing the router? But that is up to you.
Have a good one.
Found a solution! I downloaded a Winsock repair utility and ran it. Bingo. Thanks to all who offered assistance.
KM
Appreciate the post back.
That solution I had done forgot about:(
Do you have a link to that utility that you can post?
I do. Here it is. http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
System Mechanic 4.01
Ace Utilities 2.3.2
CWShredder 1.54
Please post any updates in the Updates thread.
:)
I am using Windows 2000 and having the same problem getting into Classmates.com
There is a discussion on lockergnome.com about it being a problem with the host file, but no explaination of how to get to the host file and delete unneeded files and reset to default.
Anybody know about host files???
Thanks,
Cindy
it may be a Winsock issue. I read elsewhere on the net that the WinsockXPFix utility (the link is in a post of mine above) also works with Windows 2000. Might be worth a try.
Thank you Magill!!!!!!!!!!!!
I downloaded from the link you provided and it worked.
Thanks,
Cindy
