my other computer was ok until i put on winsock2.0 downloaded from the stupid microsoft site which i needed for net zero or its messed up from antivir free anti virus software which seems to be one screwy bunch of crap .. i feel so angry
and i cant even find where to delete the stupid winsock and the stupid antivir wasnt even listed in control panel add/remove but i did remove it in start and programs or was it all removed ?
and zone arlarm i also wonder about which i took off
winsock update becomes part of dial-up networking which is required for a modem
it seems to be working better
maybe it was ezboard was nt compatible with ie 4.01
im still looking for ie 5.0 .that site i was given says its 68 mb and im not wasting time downloading 58 mb from evolt
its all screwed up and hardly works
I posted a reply but I misread the post so I remove it
But I think what's needed is some specifics
what's not working ?
are you having a connection problem ?
or is it just the browsing with IE that's the problem.
And I'd update to IE6 or use another browser
I can't really tell you a fix because I don't know where the problem is maybe your Nero software needs to be reinstalled.
Or you could even remove DUN and the Winsock registry then reinstall and rebuild.
also there is a DUN update
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q285189
there could be a million things going on an the winsock update was just the tip of the iceberg
it reaches some sites and other not at all .. i took off zone alarm and that not the reason
whats dun?
the only i can think of is format c or redo dial up networking by removing it
is it true winsock2.0 is bad for windows floppy version?
another thing came up in zone alarm saying do i want to access tcpi or ping thing
Dun is Dial up networking
also there are other updates here with more info
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/d...ds/default.asp
just for future reference but I would worry about that right now.
"tcpi or ping thing"
your zonealarm should have a log that you can see specifically what it said.
If you're connecting ok then I would suspect IE or another program running in the background more than the winsock update.
you should fine out all programs running in the background and at start up.
you should see if your Temporary Internet Files are getting cleaned up.
you should update IE or try a different browser
the internet is alot different since the release of IE4
you can get IE6 and just download the basics which I'm sure is way less than 50mb
IF you do update turn off every program with alt ctrl then tap delete once and end task everything except explorer before updating
also defragment first
ie 4.0 works ok now usually.. opera 5.02 though is hardly working
TheGorx, If steppenwolf is using Windows 95 according to the Microsoft link below IE 6 is not compatable with Windows 95.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...qs/default.asp
Just thought I's pass this info on.
Tufenuf
i have floppy version of win 95 on it.
i dont understand why at evolt it says the download for ie5 is about 70mb
how long does that take?4 days?
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/5.0
maybe thats the one
i have floppy version of win 95 on it.
Floppy version of what? IE or Windows 95 operating system itself.
You need to get IE 5.0 as the problems your having were fixed from IE 4.0.
It is a big download and can take some time using a dial up modem.
The link you posted:
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/5.0 is a Zipped file 12MB probably the full version. You click at one of the mirror sites in the right pane and download it.
Once it is downloaded you unzip it to a folder then double click on ie5setup file to install.
I would uninstall IE 4.0 then do a clean install of IE 5.
foppy version of windows 95 and floppy version on ie 3.02 updated by a download to ie4.01
i downloaded ie 5.0 and it came out as a word pad thing .. fun.. i assume because i deleted opera it got mixed up because opera seems to have their own download manager
its maddening
and what do you think of this srcewy crap?
http://www.free-av.com
what percentage of people just give up format ,and reinstall windows ?
Well I downloaded it from the link you gave and it was a 12mb zip file I unzipped it and it is IE 5.0, don't know how you got a wordpad file that big.
If you are looking for a FREE anti-virus then here is a free scan Housecall
You get what you pay for. It is worth the small investment for a anti-virus program, if you spend a lot of time on-line and download crap.
I am an advocate for Norton Anti-Virus, but thats me.
oops, yeah you're right I just looked on a Win 95 box I updated and it's IE 5.5.50Quote:

but I don't think it's issue of not being compatible
since windows 98 can install it
it more of a matter of microsoft making it impossible to install on windows 95
in one of the previos posts i said that opera has its own download manager and because i didnt reboot after i deleted it i assume that s why it turned into a word pad thing .. i assume all this crap has been caused by the opera browser but im not sure really
i cant belleive this computer ,, i deleted dial up networking in control panel .. it didnt even ask are you sure then click yes
i reboot and its not listed but im able to log onto internet anyway.. so it was not deleted even though its not listed .. who knows what else is there even though i deleted it.. ive never seen anything like it
i just formated and am reinstalling everything
thanks
The NetZero CD should have DUN 1.3 and the Winsock 2.0 update already on it. Explore the CD and have the view options set to 'show all files'.
Install the DUN upgrade first, as my understanding and experience is that it will overwrite Winsock 2.0 files if it is iinstalled last.
At least this is how it is with the Juno CDs. And my understanding is they are the exact same thing with different names from the same company.
Also the Speedband thing does not agree with some firewalls. Such as ZoneAlarm for example.
P.S. Its probably a better idea to uninstall Dial Up Networking using the SETUP function that is with the Add/Remove programs control panel function.
ok thanks .. it works ok but im sort of leary of winsock 2.o from microsoft and free net zero
earthlink works ok
With all the deletions of software and the incompatability of certain software. I would format and reinstall Win95b with IE 5.5, and Grisoft av. always a easy install that way! Say good riddens to all the problems your having. Net zero will even work in this configuration No Problem!
I'm not sure what you are talking about here. I think the only way you are going to get Winsock is the MS version. Unless you wish to program your own. Net Zero is no longer free I don't think.Quote:

Also you can get IE 5.5 off of the AOL CD's that are everywhere. Explore the CD and go to view-options, then select show all files. In the AOL 7.0 folder is a folder that says browsers. Open it and inside is the install program for MSIE 5.5. Its the MSIE 9x program. You DO NOT need AOL installed on your computer for this to work as some may tell you. However, AOL does brand the titlebar with their signature and little 'throbber' in the right hand corner. Instructions how to get rid of this can be found on 95isalive website in the Internet Explorer section.
The only shortcoming is this IE 5.5 does not come with the SP2 update.
These CDs also contain the install program for the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine so you don't have to download that either.
thanks ,, i got real player of of a office max cd for earthlink or something
