I have a question about refresh rates:
Right now I'm using an LG700S monitor with has a max refresh rate of 1280x1024 at 60hz......... but i like my desktop resolution at 800x600. Can I safely take the refresh rate to 75hz or 85hz at an 800x600 setting?......... or do i have to stay at 60hz regardless?

My old latop had a maximum of 1024x768 60mhz max refresh rate. The monitor was simply Multiple Monitors on my Mobility M3 graphics card, which was a crappy graphics card anyway. If you have a good video driver, and you really want a higher refresh rate.. I personally would risk it, but don't hold me responsable if anything goes wrong! :p
Oh btw, is it a "17 monitor? Im not 100% certain but with larger screens i think that you actually can compensate a lower screen area for a higher refresh rate, but as i said, dont hold me to that.
I'm not sure about Win9x/ME, but in Win2000 or XP go to Display Properties>Setting and set your resolution, then click the Advanced button, go to the Monitor tab and make sure that the "Only display refresh rates that the monitor can support" checkbox is checked. Then all the refresh rates that are displayed in the drop down list are safe to use.

Sparks.... i am using XP, and you are exactly right. I can achieve 85hz at 800x600 safely. I noticed the difference right away.
And thanks 104456, i went to the LG website but could not come up with a graphic like that.
As an aside, I am looking to buy a 19" Viewsonic G90FB......... unless someone can tell me that this is a bad monitor for some reason.

Viewsonic is pretty high quality. Just watch out for companies like ProView and Samtron. ProView monitors have a tendency to short out after a few months.
IMHO you simply cannot go wrong with ViewSonic. As a more affordable alternative, I've personally had really good luck with Samsung products.

It's worth mentioning that installing the latest monitor drivers can be worthwhile. I got my Iiyama monitors up from 85 to 100Hz (at 1280 x 1024) by installing the latest drivers.
For really top-class monitors look at Iiyama or Mitsubishi.

Do a search for a program called GetSmile. There is a free version available, or buy if you like. It contains hundreds of smilies, and you can collect any others you find on the internet. Any board or email that supports IMG tagging lets you just drag and drop into your messages. Hi I just read this post and prompted by sparky I upgraded my monitor drivers and hey presto I now have available 100 instead of 85 as my max refresh rate enjoying it right now. Thanks for the prompt, I have a Mitsubishi monitor very good.BTW sparky the kitten has now become a cat and following on another post I decided to clean my keyboard gave it a good wash and used daughters hairdryer to effect rapid moisture removal then left on a bed for sun to finish drying. Came back later to find above mentioned wet and dirty cat using keyboard as bed, so back to the wash room, and yes it still works.
I've had very good performance from several KDS monitors. On my main PC, i use the 19" Visual Sensations VS-190i and luv it. ;)
KDS also have a nice 3 year warranty with the first year having a cross ship program if something goes wrong. And all you need do is pack the bad one in the box the exchange comes in and call Airborne express to come pick it up at "their" expense.:cool: Only had to do this with one unit,but that was because of poor handling by an Office Depot clerk(as it turned out). Also agree on using drivers from Mfr. instead of generic Windoze ones. Also agree with staying clear of Proview. Very limited warranty and you'd be lucky if it lasted for even "that" short time...:rolleyes:
Viewsonic monitors have always been my first choice. Never had an issue with any of the models I have owned or sold. As an alternative choice I offer KDS, for the financially challenged, and my clients have been pleased with thier choice. Recently, withing the last 6 mos or so, I have begun offerring some Samsung SynchMasters models as well and although it is a little premature to attest to thier durability I have clients happy with them too more than I can say about the bad run of luck I had with the Samtron line that the Samsung models replaced.
I assume folk referring to Samtron and Samsung know Samtron is Samsung?

I believe you have it backwards Platypus Samsung is the parent company. So in actuality Samsung is Samtron for details . I know it sounds like I'm splitting hairs but the difference allows for Samsung to make a reliable product and sell its cast offs.

refresh rates depend a lot on the monitor capability and vid card capability settings. i.e. not just refresh rates put advanced options on vid cards with gl support features.
Somebody said samtron should be watched out for... Untrue. Samtron is one of the leaders in vid card and vid card/ plus memory chips of all sorts! I have a samtron 17inch long before xp came out but still can handle the hot vid cards. I won't trade it in.. no way.

Maybe a difference in the use of language, but "Samtron is Samsung" to me economically states "Samtron is (made by) Samsung", or "Samtron is (part of) Samsung", perhaps it would have been more specific to say "Samtrons are Samsung" to point to the product rather than the company.
It just struck me as a little curious that folk disenchanted with Samtron would enthusiastically substitute Samsung, if they were aware they were also manufacturing the despised product.
I was under the impression monitor"drivers" were merely inf files which contained relavent information regarding the monitor resolutions etc not a driver per se and were not a requirement to achieve good resolution from any monitor or am I incorrect in my assumption?Quote:

Hi I must say when I updated my monitor drivers I was surprised that they where only Inf files, however when I checked further I noticed they have a relationship with my vid card driver. It is this that I suspect optimisers the refresh rate. Either way my default went from max 85 to 100. If you want a technical answer I will be back in civilisation early next week and have the tech's who should know. Thanks 104456 for raising this as it is interesting.
I've been running a 2-monitor desktop for awhile now, and since my 4 monitors don't match each other, I've learned more than I expected to about color and clarity.
17" MAG Innovision is clearest
15" ViewSonic is truest colors and best contrast
17" NEC MultiSync looks terrible next to almost anything
15" cheapie off of an e-machine makes it look like everything is written in warm marshmallow
I've used Sony monitors in the past and they are probably my favorite. Laptop users shouldn't have to worry about refresh rates too much, since their screens are LCD.
I just had a look at the Iiyama driver, which comprises a couple of .inf files and shedloads of .icm files (something to do with colour profiles). The main .inf files contains a load of Registry changes amongst other things, so there's obviously more than just information in them.
