Alright everyone! I had the unwanted ISTbar on my PC, but I got some info. on another thread that gets it removed. BUT, I still get unwanted adult link pop-ups, pop-ups for online degrees, pop-ups for singles....etc., everytime I just click on my Internet Explorer. I always see something with JavaScript popup message on my Status Bar.
Any help from you guys, to get this **** off my PC, would be greatly appreciated!

What did you use to clean your system? I'd recommend Spybot if you hadn't used it. As to all the popups, you may just try using a popup/ad stopper/blocker type program. The "...JavaScript popup..." usually means that there's a popup or a link you clicked on has prompted a popup message.
Will these programs block popups, or will they erase whatever it is on my PC that is allowing them to come up. Its not like they just pop up when I visit a website, they pop up even when I am playing solitaire on my computer, without the internet even being up. Using RoadRunner, I guess I am connected all the time, but I am not even surfing when some of these come up. It can get embarassing too when someone is over, and an adult popup comes up.....
I think this may have happened while my brother checked his e-mail from my PC, as he was forwarded a link to an "adult joke". It has been happening ever since then.

All I did was replace the Hosts file in XP with this and 98% of all my pop-ups went away. Be sure to read the info thoroughly so you know how/why it works. Rather painless way to get rid of most pop-ups. One nice thing is that it didn't affect forum pop-up notices, etc. that some popup killer utilities will do. There are other sites that have listings you can add to the hosts file (such as 50,000 porn popup ad urls), but you have to be careful...if you add too many urls to that file, it can slow down your browser considerably. The hosts file at the site above has the listings of some 38,000 known advertisers. Some disadvantages: It will not work with ads that are served from the same site you are viewing. You will need a pop-up killer program for that. Also, some sites are tied in with the ads---kill the ads and you kill the site...you won't be able to view it properly. (But you can configure the hosts file to not block that particular url if you so choose).
I will tell you that since doing this, I rarely have pop-ups (I can hear them trying to click on, but they don't) and I very rarely have any trouble viewing sites.

The "pop-ups" or advertisements that you are receiving may have been from a program called "Rapid Blaster". This is caused by inadvertently or purposely clicking one of the links provided in the www.rapidblaster.com web site that would start to install the program on your computer.
This website is for the sole purpose to receive free adult content that will be downloaded to your desktop and hard drive. After the initial install, you do not have to be on line when this program displays the "pop up's".

The "Rapid Blaster" program can be removed from your computer by following these steps:
1. On any standard Windows 98, 2000, or XP operating system click the "Start" button, located at the lower left-hand corner of your screen.
2. Click "Settings" and then click "Control Panel"
3. Within the "Control Panel" window double-click the icon that says "Add/Remove Programs" (this will display a list of programs that are currently installed on your P.C.)
4. Locate the "Rapid Blaster" program in the list and then click on
"Remove/Uninstall" (this should safely remove the program from your P.C.)
5. After you click on "Remove/Uninstall" an Internet browser window should automatically open asking you to fill out a short survey. **BE CERTAIN THAT ALL CHECK BOXES ARE "NOT" SELECTED AND NO OTHER INFORMATION ON THE FORM IS ENTERED** Scroll down to the bottom of the form and click the button that says "Click here to Submit"
6. Finally, after un-installation is finished click on the "Close, Exit
or the "X" Button (located at the far most top right of the Add/Remove programs window and the Internet browser window to insure that you are completely exited properly.

Wish we could sue the people who do this....I believe California is contemplating making a law that will allow one to do just that.
Ok, so I don't have Rapid Blaster installed on my PC. Anyone have any ideas as to how to remove the 'program' or virus, or whatever it is, from my PC? I haven't had these problems until lately. Normal popups are not a problem with me, all big sites have them, and thats fine, however when popups start coming up when I am playing cards....thats what really pisses me off. I never downloaded or allowed anything onto my PC which would do this. Who would?

Also,,i would suggest you go into Tools>Internet options>advanced tab in your browser and take the checks out of "enable install on demand". In IE 6 there will be two of them...

Go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/, and download Hijack This.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".
When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please show us its contents.
Most of what it lists will be harmless, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you interpret the results.

If these popups are generated by spyware inside your computer, a popup stopper won't be of much use.
Let's have that Hijack This log. It's a terrific troubleshooting tool.

But you don't need to do that. Just do a copy and paste:
If you doubleclick the log file, does it open in Notepad?
If so, go to Edit > Select all, then to Edit > copy.
Now you've copied the entire text to the Windows Clipboard (this happens behind your back.)
Next, go back to this forum thread, and click "Post Reply".
In an empty area click your RIGHT mouse button, and choose 'Paste' from the context menu.
And voila, there's your Hijack This log.
NOTE: Should the log not open in Notepad by default, do this:
. Highlight the logfile by clicking on it once
· Hold down the shift key and then right-click your mouse
· Select "Open With" from the menu
. Pick Notepad.exe.
Be sure to check the box, "Always use this program to open these files".
· Click "OK" and you are all done!

Those are probably sneaking through port 137 (netBIOS) while you're connected with cable. You're online all the time, with or without a browser window. You can use a firewall to stop them. I use ZoneAlarm www.zonelabs.com (free) but you can also use the crummy firewall included with XP. Just using the default settings with ZoneAlarm eliminated all my pop-ups.
Some people prefer to disable the messaging service that delivers these messages. Of course, you still have the open port as a security hole, but it's effective to stop popups. (it seems windows messaging is disabled by default in server2003, maybe MS will be phasing it out in workstation oses, too)
i had a similar problem like this. When the popup's come up, or even just now, close ALL open programs and press ctrl+alt+delete and tell me what prgrams you have running (write them all) then i will take it from there

Maybe no one is like me, but you should see my Windows Add/Remove Programs list. It is full of
broken links. The only way to remove them is to open up the Registry and try to figure out where the
Uninstall entries are. I'm too lazy to do this more than once a year, so I wrote Add/Remove Pro.
Just run Add/Remove Pro and it will show you which links are bad. Press the Remove Entry button to

I would recommend starting with just zonealarm, free, from www.zonelabs.com, and if that doesn't work try posting back. Cookie handling and cleaning out your add/remove programs list (which can be done for free with tweakUI from microsoft) isn't going to stop popups.
Curiously, do you know where you can download that software for free? You had mentioned it was a free download, however, I couldn't find it on that site.

Zone Labs makes money by selling their high-end products, so they make sure those are the ones that get the extra visibility on their website. The free Zone Alarm can be found here or by going to the zone labs' website, clicking on download&buy, the 'zone alarm' link, and 'download'.

Hi everyone, been a while so I figured I would share my status. The popups have been pretty much killed, which is good. I have RoadRunner, so my connection is supposed to be fast, however, it seems to be really slow lately (even cannot keep up with my typing sometimes??!!??) and I don't know if anything has gotten onto my PC again, or if it is something to do with ZoneLabs (Zone Alarm - has been working great). Here are some important steps I did to get rid of ALL unwanted pop-ups.
1. The minute I connected to cable broadband and installed XP, I got XXX pop-ups unrelated to internet explorer. I turned off the Windows Messaging service, and it stopped (haven't had one of those since).
2. I have zonealarm (free version) firewall running.
3. Spywareblaster
4. Spybot S & D
5. Ad-aware
6. Google toolbar version 2 Beta. Apart from being the best search engine around, it also includes the best pop-up killer I have ever used. HIGHLY recommended!
