explorer crashes when closing folder

explorer crashes when closing folder

This is a random problem but is happing more freqently. If I leave a few folders open for a while and then I go to close one I get a explorer.exe crash.
This is what I get with event viewer.
Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2800.1106, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x0181a430.

Attached is what it looks like when it crashes.
I have tryred everything to fix this, format many times, restart windows but it keeps happening. I wish microsoft would get off there lazy butts and make a windows that works instead of crashing all the time and no after the 1000 time I don't want to send a error report which you ignore of course for your buggy software just so you can release yet another security update which I install and then have to restart my computer and it still does not fix any of the problems. :mad:

What is crashing is NOT Exlorer which is Windows, but IExplorer which is version 6 and Internet Explorer....two different things here.....:D

A little more information, please?

Are these specific folders, or does this happen with any/all folders? When you open them in windows explorer only, or from any location?

You said you formatted. So...could it be the type of files within those folders, I wonder? Just probing here.

Does this occur when you open system folders, like in Windows?

faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0 seems suspicious.

Any liitle clue.....

Many similar problems have been caused by spy and adware installations. Try Spybot. Update it before running. Be sure to reboot afterwards and run it a second time if prompted.

Since Reddice first posted the error message as below:

To ME: It does seem to be that is what he's talking about.

Also, I beleive that all these security updates, version updates cause most of the problems with Windows and it's side components. I have none of these installed in my computer and so far haven't had any of the problems others post about in here. Maybe that's their problem.

I had the same type of problem when I first got my system, I could close some of the system folders and I would get a memory read error, however it was not the memory at fault but the motherboard. It kept telling me it could not read from a specific location, and the location was different for each folder I was trying to close. Your problem may not be the motherboard, but keep it in mind anyway if you do not find another solution. When Micron gave me a new motherboard the problem went away.

I realize that, but on reddice's post he also has version 6.

So since that is what was posted, I'm wondering if by chance this error message was typed out and reddice missed putting the I in front of Explorer. The reason I'm stating all this is because if indeed it's IExplorer and NOT Explorer as in windows xp, any info we give him should reflect what the error is caused from.

Follow Rog's advice and do a scan with SpyBot S&D.

It would also be useful to have a closer look at your configuration:

Go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php#det, and download 'Hijack This!'.

Unzip it, launch Hijack This, then press "Config" > "Miscellaneous Tools", and press "Generate Startuplist Log"

This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.

Go to Edit > select all, copy it and post its contents here.

arifu: Thank you.....I never realized "explorer.exe" had a version number also. Never looked it up to see.....my mistake.....sorry for all the doubt. :D

No reason to assume. Internet Explorer has noting to do with opening a folder.

Of course, you're absolutely right! And I stand corrected on my hasty statement, that statement being taken in isolation from the issue.
So - IE could be used to open folders, but even if reddice had used that method to open his folders, on closing them explorer.exe would have been the program to have crashed. And as Rog pointed out, I also have a feeling it's caused by spyware/adware.

I'm wondering now that spyware/adware has been mentioned, if Reddice has a pop up stopper on his computer also.

I did at one time have one of these programs installed and it stopped everything....even windows folders from opening.....:(

Just a thought, mine alone!! ;)
