Favorites on Diskette

Question please. I put all my Favorites list on a diskette and it didn't take but a second. How do I tell for sure they were installed on the disk?

Open a file from the diskette. Every link is 1 Kb, so it is normal to write quick.

Lisakrisa is correct. Doesn't take much time due to the size.

Check the disk in another PC, then you know for sure.

You can right-click the source folder such as c:\windows\favorites and select Properties to see the number of files involved. Compare in the same way to your floppy.

Additionally you can see the number of bytes these files occupy - compare that in the same way. This method will work for any stuff you copy, and have doubts about.

For anyone who is thinking "that never happens - it always copies what you requested..." I've known PCs of many different specs to NOT fully copy selected files. Please don't ask me why...

My guess would be caching. I have written large files to my ZIP Drive and to a Direct CD. Widows said the file was finished. Yet the drive continued for a minute or so longer. The file was in cache, but not yet written to the disk.

Just a add, because mine will span floppies when I use the SendTo for my favories, I wait until it asks for a second floppy.
I use Zip Magic and no they are not zipped. It takes 4 floppies for mine.

Just an idea

I don't use favourites, I use Excel. All I do is have a large page of hyperlinks, I then save that as Homepage.htm and set that as my homepage.
The good part is that you have all your links to hand and you only have one file to backup. Of course you can decorate as you like nice backgrounds etc.

Philgo, is that like Bookmark Wizard?

IE5.5 and 6 can make one like a web page, but I don't know if you can fancy it up like you describe. It's under File>Import and Export in IE only.

Jo Jo Gunn,,Train IS the library Guru of VirtualDr! Thought everyone knew that. :D

I simply open a blank floppy and the Fav folder in Windows. Select all from the edit menu and copy/paste the whole shmear over. Takes one floppy for mine, but there's only about 100Kbs left after copying. Of course before i do this, i run a program called AM-Deadlink to check and get rid of any broken links. No sense copying bad ones ya' know...

Thanks for that heads up on Deadlinks. I've been meaning to get around to looking over the measly amount of links I have. Can't remember half of what they're for anymore. (How does Train keep up, he mutters to himself....). :confused: :D

Why do you think you place folders within folders in a systematic way?? :rolleyes:

Now AM- Deadlinks saves some time. A very good program.

EDIT-that's one neat little program, Ridgerunner. Even has it's own little browser window so you can confirm an error or timeout.

Being new to this message-board I 'm surprised to see how this thread has grown - but it has grown with some very useful tit-bits of information. Terrific stuff!

A thought occurred to me while reading this - that there is a limit to the number of files you can put in the root of a floppy - something like 200 to 300? Memory fails here... However, you can put more into folders, thus a:\ has a limit, while a:\favorites\ will not suffer this limit.

Totally agree with Train that a "family tree" organised approach to file management is the only way to work. Funny how it's totally alien to some people though...:)

JoJo Gunn, Maybe you can use Bookmark Wizard I've never used it.

All I do is right click a cell then choose Hyperlink and fill it in either by typing or going to browsed pages. Once the page is saved I then use it for my homepage, I think its great as you can see it all before your eyes.

I have columns with titles like Forums, Microsoft etc etc........

That works with ALL OTHER FOLDERS WELL TOO !!! Funny how people forget all organized handling when sitting in front of PC's...:rolleyes:

Tip: Put all your files in organized folders beneath 'My Documents'. Allows for a quick and easy backup. :)

Actually, mine are categorized. But after 2 weeks or so I can't remember even going to a lot of those sites. :D
