Compaq Quick Restore Problems

Hey everybody, this is my first ever post here so here it goes. I have a Compaq 5170 which was made b4 Jan 1999.It became bogged down, got real slow and I lost some files due to a virus. I saved as much info as I could and tried to do a Quick Restore with the original disk but all it would do is open up the Quick Restore screen , I click the full restore button, it boots down to a black screen, the red Compaq logo comes up, then changes to a black screen with a flashing curser. That is as far as it goes, the key board and mouse are inoperable and I have to power down and up (after ejecting the QR disk). The system comes back up with no apparent changes and works the same. Now for some history.The first thing I did to it when it was new was do a full QR as per Compaq because it had a video problem. It worked just fine but didnt fix the prob. It was fixed under warrenty by a Compaq Tech. He installed 2-3 softpacs,a new mother board and finally a new monitor. (it was the monitor). Over the next 31/2 years it got a virus and the cdrom started having sporatic lockup probs. Mcfee got rid of the virus and I installed a HP cdrw. After reading what I could find on Compaq community They advised me to restore the sytem to original configuration and do a fdisk to remove all partitions. this part worked. All partitions were removed and then formatted. I tried the QR disk and it did the same thing. (BLACK SCREEN) . I paid $4o bucks to Compaq support for them to tell me the same things(along with ordering new QR disk with 3-4 update disks)They also told me I would be better off to obtain a copy of Win98 and forget about trying to QR. The new disk did not work either. I have tried a few different ways to get this thing going and no dice. I finally did load Win 2000 on it with few problems. Then Win 98 no problems. I am either wanting to QR this thing to get my Windows license back or after a ton of reading just try to get Win 98 working with my original COA License. I did a info.bom search and nothing came back. I did find the bomid file on theQR disk. Nothing there that i recognize as pertaining to uiabomwrxxx.What stumps me is why QR worked 4years ago and now it won't. Mother board change? maybe virus nailed bomid ? Any help would be much helpful. It looks like a lot of Compaq owners cant get their systems to restore either(or get thier COA back) after all the reading I have done. Thanx in advance!!

Did you put the cd in the cdrom, reach back and turn the computer off. Wait 30 seconds and the turn it on?

Doing just a reboot normally fails.

But I see you had the new QR cds, so try the above as the bomid should be on the new cds and install. Unless those are just copies of the early 99 master QR cds. Those made after Sep 99 are setup where they will add the Bomid to the new hdds instead like the olders systems.

Doing that wiped the Bomid off the hdd. And if I may make a recommendation. Just get a 98SE full install cd and install it. Lots less hassle, and Compaq butchered 98 and will not admit it. I fixed that by getting the 98SE upgrade and installing it. Run fine for years. After it died, I built a new computer. Not worth fixing money wise for me.

I've got a '99 CPQ Pressario 5070 and I'd recommend buying a copy of w2k. That way you'll have a license and a decent OS. You're not going to be able to transfer the license to another machine with the QR option. And with any machine this old, no matter what OS you're using the machine's not worth the cement it would take to make the thing sink. (so much for the "boat anchor" analogy...lol)

There's a good reason why those CPQ people had to merge to stay alive. Good thing too, now we can get rid of both companies with one bankruptcy.

You can get a full version of w2k here for $135 US. Then you'll have an OS and license that will easily transfer from one machine to another.

Thanks a bunch for the replies. The cold boot procedure gives me a black screen with a flashing curser. I can go over there right now and that thing will boot Win 98SE right up. But It will not give me my original COA Win98 back. Thats what I am after. Sure there are much improved systems out there. But that system works just fine for the use i was getting out of it. Evidently at the black screen the QR disk is looking for the elusive bom#. I have read elsewhere in this forum about extracting the bomid out of the boot floppy thru uaidump.exe(hlp). This comes back file not found. Anyone else have any other ideas or solutions?

Unless you made the Compaq rescue disk and boot to them. Best bet, buy a OS.

Forgot, you can tke it into a authorized repair place and they will do it. But, $$$$ involved that way too.

Hi dalejr these can be a real b***h when they don't go as originally planned. I worked for Compaq for years before HP sent our jobs to India. I'm not surprised at all that they took your $40 bucks and didn't fix a thing. I feel sorry for all my former clients who have to deal with such third rate support and battle with trying to understand foriegner's accents when they bought an American product.

Lets see if we can get this puppy to roll over, sit up and beg for you. :)

First detach everything except for the keyboard monitor and mouse. Any new hardware installed on the inside of the computer will also have to be removed as well. You can leave the CDRW Drive if it is the only CD drive you have.

Next we want to reset the BIOS defaults: Starting from a powered off state the moment you see Compaq in red come up in red quickly tap repeatedly on the 'F10' key. From here reset the BIOS defaults. Before you restart insert the QR CD.

On reboot quickly tap repeatedly on the 'F8' key once at the Windows 98 startup menu select safe mode command prompt and press enter. This will bring us to an A prompt in DOS. From here type N: then press enter ( a virtual drive created when booting off the QR). From N:\ type "dir fdisk.* /s" without the quotations if memory serves it should show up in N:\tools if it doesn't search the A drive it may show up in A:\cpqs\tools or A:\System.

Once you have determined which directory it is in change to that directory eg. from the A prompt type cd cpqs\tools to go to A:\cpqs\tools. From here type fdisk /mbr then FDisk remove all partitions. Then recreate one partition that uses the maximum amount of space available for the primary partition. Shut down completely and restart. The QR CD should format the drive and continue from there]

This N drive thing. HMMMMM. Interesting. I will get that thing dusted off and try this procedure. I think it has a nother modem in it but i still have the original one somewhere(IT WAS A REAL PIECE OF WORK). Best I remember the last time I fdisked it I created 1 large partition. Then tried the QR cd and got a black screen. After fdisk does the partition need to be formatted or not. I have a boot disk I made AFTER the tech put the new motherboard in it. I also have a disk called QRST5 I made off of the QR disk itself. All it does is tell you what kind of system you have and if anything is wrong. THANKS CALPITOR. No need to format QR should do everything for you. If you can't find the original modem, and yes Compaq always had grand modems, just remove the one you upgraded to.

Its either bad CDs, what condition are they in? Which QR CD are you trying to boot off of? When you spoke to Compaq did they verify the new QR CD part number? or a problem with the drive; reseat connectors? perhaps try another drive?

Booting off the QR CD loads virtual drives A drive will no longer be the floppy drive and another drive, N will also be created. You have to successfully boot off the QR CD for these virtual drives to be created. When you boot to down to safe mode command prompt and switch to A there has to be a floppy in the drive this is why you got an error.

When I talked to Compaq they assured me the would "fix" this problem. That was in July 2002. I have the original QuickRestore disk which came with the computer when it was new. Compaq and a few other people told me I had a bad QR disk so I ordered a new one. While I was on the phone the person I talked to didnt speak my language very well but informed me that for an extra sum I could get "update disks" for the 5170. They shipped me an exact visual copy of the QR disk( with the same numbers) along with 4 Presario Software Enhancement CDs. I now have 2 QR CDs. The Compaq techs (3of them) told me to basically give it up and buy a copy of Win 98 for $70 and load the drivers myself. They did tell me if I did this before my week was up to call back and they would help me with the drivers. They really tried to blame this on a bad hard drive. I have checked connectors and all are in good shape except for the one that plugs in on the hard drive. When I tried pulling it off the keeper on the plug pulled off. I did try another hard drive and got the same thing. At one time I did get an error on the hard drive but it doesnt show up now. A buddie suggested that I try switching plugs around on the mobo but I dont quite understand how to set the jumpers up on the hd, zipdr, cdrw. By the way the hard drive I tried was a 1.7gig Seagate.

dale what components make up your system please? and what is the serial number to your Presario? I would like to compare the original configuration with what you have in front of you.

Its a Compaq 5170 Presario bought new in October 1998. #6839BX25L286. Pen2 350 Maxtor 10gig hd 128ram Zip drive cd-rom Win 98. I replaced the cd-rom with a HP 9510i cdrw. I still have the original cdrom. I can get it to work sometimes if I needed to re-install it. It presently has Win98se loaded on it.

I went ahead and fdisked again. created 9524 Mbytes of primary dos. Made it active. Powered down and back up with QR in the tray. Got that familiar black screen with the flashing curser. I wonder where that other four hundred some odd megabytes of space went? Any body have that bomid # for that computer. It might be whats missing.

Is the Jumper onthe Hard dribe set to Cable Select?

The jumper is in cacle select according to the maxtor site. thanks again for working on this problem. Where would we be without people like the folks from DR VIRTUAL!!

Information
When a Hard Drive manufacturer is reporting that a drive is 30 GB (Gigabytes), they are saying the drive has 10 * 1000 * 1000 * 1000 bytes = 10000000000 bytes.

Assuming that the drive is exactly 10000000000 bytes, the computer will report this as 10000000000 / 1024 / 1024 / 1024 GB = 9.31322574615478515625GB.

However, even the 30000000000 byte number is an approximation, as hard drive manufactures will round off the size of the drive as well. So a 10 GB drive, may actually be a 9.9 GB drive or a 10.4 GB drive, to quote two examples. So 9524 doesn't sound entirely out of line.

During the manufacturing process, an identification number (BOMID) is written to the UIA area of a hard drive. This BOMID identifies the model of the PC into which the hard drive is installed. Replacement hard drives do not contain this information.
Therefore, when using QuickRestore on a Compaq Presario PC that contains a replacement hard drive, QuickRestore will be unable to identify the model of the PC.
SOLUTION
Follow the steps below to write the BOMID to the UIA area of the hard drive:

1. Insert the QuickRestore diskette (when applicable) and CD into the appropriate drives, then restart the computer.
NOTE: If a QuickRestore boot diskette is not included with the QuickRestore kit, you can create this diskette from the BOOTDISK subdirectory on the QuickRestore CD.

2. From the initial screen (Program Language Selection), Exit the QuickRestore utility.

3. From the A:\> prompt type uiabomwr_xxx (where xxx is the BOMID of the PC), then press Enter.

EXAMPLE: A:\uiabomwr 034 would store the 034 BOMID (for a Compaq Presario model 4122) into the UIA area of the hard drive.

NOTE: On future Versions of QuickRestore CDs, the uiabomwr.exe utility will be located in the TOOLS directory of the QuickRestore CD.

Unfortunately I can't find what the BOMID for a 5170 is. I have tried looking everywhere I can think of and have attempted to contact Compaq\HP for you and haven't heard back as yet, if I ever do (India office is over filled with lazy no-minds in my opinion). Automated resonse:

The best I can suggest for you at this time is to search the QR Cd folders where uiabomwr.exe utility is located to see if there is a .txt file or readme file that may contain what the correct bomid is.

Recovery Process Crashes

Compaq 4100 series. The Recovery Disks will either not run at all, or crash at around 16%+.

If you've got a Windows 95 startup disk, then boot to an A: prompt, else put the Recovery Floppy Disk in, and press F8 when it says "Starting Windows 95" and choose "Save Mode Command Prompt Only".

Run Fdisk and examine the partition information. You will find 2 NON DOS partitions. Delete the larger of the two and recreate a Primary Dos partition.

Then format the drive, using the command FORMAT C: /U /V /S

When it has finished, switch the machine off and back on, and run the Recovery Disks again.

Creating New Recovery Floppy Disk / Wrong MSDOS Version

If you get an error message during re-installation saying "WRONG MSDOS VERSION", or any other problems with the boot disk, then on the Recovery CD there is a file called "qrst5.exe" in the "bootdisk" directory. If you run it, it creates a new boot disk on a blank floppy disk.

QuickRestore Utility Cannot Use Valid Serial Numbers On Blank Hard Drives

QuickRestore kits with the 242569-001 or 242569-002 boot diskettes will not accept valid CPU serial numbers. This is most commonly seen when a serial number is required to QuickRestore a new hard drive.

Solution is to write the BOM ID to the UIA area of the hard drive:

Insert the original QuickRestore boot diskette and CD-ROM into the appropriate drive, then restart the computer.
Exit the QuickRestore utility from the initial screen (Program Language Selection screen).
At the A:\ prompt type uiabomwr xxx (the xxx represents the BOM ID, see below), then press the Enter key.

When the computer reboots you should be able to restore the machine as normal.

Not Accepting Serial Number Presario 1200

After having a Hard Drive replaced, the Quick Restore would not accept the serial number entered. The solution is to enter the serial number as 1111(then the middle four letters)1111, so if the serial number is abcdefghijlm then the number you would enter would be 1111efgh1111.

Presario 1060 QuickRestore Lockup

If when running the QuickRestore software on a Presario 1060, when you enter the Product Identification Number and presses Enter (or the Next button), the system locks up with the following error:

"XMS Cache Problem. Registry services maybe inoperative this session. Not enough extended memory to run Windows. Quit one or more applications to increase available memory or restart your computer. Press any key..."

The problem is caused by an incorrect line in the CONFIG.SYS file: "DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS I=E800-EFFF" This update replaces the incorrect line with the following line: "DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS"

You can download the following patch which corrects the problem - SP4273.

Manually Extracting Files From Recovery CD

To install individual files from the Compaq 4000/4400/4500/4700 Series Recovery CD, carry out the following steps,

Get hold of a copy of WinZip from http://www.winzip.com in order to view the archive contents without decompressing first.
Insert the Quick Recovery CD and look for a folder containing 10 zip files (normally called na02).
Double clicking on a Zip file will open that file and show a list of the contents. Hunt around until you find the file(s) you're looking for.
Highlight the file(s) you want and click on the Extract icon.
It should scan the zip file for the files and then ask you to enter a password. Enter (without quotes) "PREDATOR ###", where the ### is the last three numbers in the zip file name (the name that appears on the WinZip window title bar). Ie, for the file Win010.zip, the password would be PREDATOR010. For the file Compaq26.zip, the password would be PREDATOR026.
N.B. For the Compaq 4540 & 4882 (and probably most of the new Compaqs), the password is SMDCONSUMER (in capitals).

Selective QuickRestore

Some of the new range of Compaq Presarios have a new version of the QuickRestore CD which allows the end user to re-install selected drivers and applications without having to do a full format and restore.

The instructions that come with the system do not describe the Custom Restore procedure correctly. The correct instructions are as below:

After you have selected the item you want to restore the system will restart and boot off the QuickRestore CD. The menu that then appears has 5 options:

QuickRestore with Quick Format.
QuickRestore with Full Format.
Diagnostics.
Virus Scan.
Exit.
Option 1 is the correct option to choose, even though it says Quick Format. The hard drive will NOT be formatted.

After choosing option 1, the system will then eject the QuickRestore CD and wait for you to press a key before booting into Windows 98 and continuing the installation process.

The unit will restart once more after the selected driver/application has been installed. After this final restart, the system is then ready to be used again.

5130 - 16 Colours After Quick Restore

After running the Quick Restore, the display will not go higher than 16 Colours, depite the right graphics card being setup, and no problems in Device Manager.

The solution,

Go into Device Manager and into Display Adapters.
Change to Standard VGA and restart machine.
Back into Device Manager and change Display Adapter to 3D Rage lt Pro English (Directx).
Restart again.
An error will come up saying there is a problem with display settings, just cancel.
Set to more than 16 colours and restart.
2100 Series Quick Restore Update

This update allows the Quick Restore process on the Presario 2100 series to recognise 16x CD-ROM drives. The patch number is SP7924.

After restoring my Compaq 5032, some of the original software is missing

The Hard disk drive needs to be re-armed. to do this :-

Insert recovery CD1 and reboot
On the first Compaq logo screen that flashes up, make sure Caps & Numlock keys are on and their lights are illuminated.
When it loads into recovery, a Compaq quick restore screen will be flashing, when it stops flashing press Numlock so it goes off
At the 'Welcome to Compaq quick restore' screen press Ctrl and Q together.
Proceed with rest of quick restore as usual. All the original software will now be restored.

Miracles of miracles I actually heard back from HP! This is what they suggested:

7. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the QuickRestore
process.

I'm trying to help a friend get his presario back up and running. I am a former Compaq employee and therefore Compaq certified. After replacing the hard drive with a Maxtor 10GB drive the QR CD can't detect the BOMID required to complete the process. I am familiar with the uiabomwr.exe utility but require the bomid number.

3 guesses where he is located. Please try the QR Dance proscribed here but I will be surprised if it works!

Your right Calpitor I still get the black screen of ............. Tried different varieties of the keyboard tap dance. By the way that hard drive is the original drive. Thoght id add that. Thought maybe you might be fishing in India or something.

Excerpt from email response:

I searched all available Presario databases and found that there is no BOMID for this Presario model. If a BOMID is required then it will be present in the *.sku file present in the restore CD.The BOMID will be present in this file. I suggest you to browse for this file in the CD.

I also suggest that you check for the part number of the new restore CD as there will be a problem if the user is not using the correct CD. The part number is as follows:
QR Kit - 341796-001
QuickRestore CD 1 - 341797-001

If you can find someone with Presario model 51xx I suggest that you can create a Emergency Backup diskette from the Presario support icon as this disk will contain all the userid informations of the hard drive. Try booting the restore CD along with this diskette.

boy this is getting tough. That is the same disk # that came with the system and the same disk Compaq sent me. I installed another hard drive I had laying around that had WIN98SE on it this mornig. Had some driver probs but finally got it up and running. Also replaced the HD ribbon. Tried the QR and still got the black screen. I searched the QR disk in DOS and in Windows and did not find a .sku file. From what I read Compaq is saying the boot disk made from the desktop icon is different than a regular 98 startup disk made on the same sytem?? I have the original diskette I made from the Windows Start up tab. I vagually remember maybe making one from a desktop icon but I cant find it though. Know any where to look for another 5170 owner? Compaq/HP site isnt working too good.

Don't know if they are the same or not for your model. At least you can get an idea of what's on them. :)

The startup disk created through Compaq or Presario Support is pretty much the same startup disk with the exception of a few Compaq files thrown in. Greengoose's model, gawd I fell sorry for him a 5360?!!? other than the EZ Family those things were horrible, unfortunately has too many differences from your model to be truly helpful. You din't have to find a 5170 owner per se, anyone from 5100 family who creates a startup disk through, and I apologize I don't remember if it is Compaq Support or Presario Support (prety much same Utility; different title) should suffice. If you boot up with the 98 hard drive and once the at the desktop, if you insert the CD it should open a window. This will give you options for 1) either Custom or Selective Restore and what else?

And here are the files list of the startup disk from the Compaq 5360. Note the proprietary files are missing on the start up disk.

Hi Calpitor, This computer was built to European Specifications which are somewhat more stringent than in the US. The power supply is 235W. The original memory stick, a Siemens. With the help of several people, I was able to modify it and have two WD harddrives, 384 memory, Lite On burner, and an IBM 3.5 floppy. Added one 80mm fan to ensure positive air flow.

There are three OS installed, WIN98SE, WINME, and XP. The unit is stable as a rock now but was not originally which was mostly my fault.

Calpitor when the quick restore window pops up I get 3 choices. Custom, Typical and Full restore. Custom gives me 2 options. restore Compaq Service Connection or Macfee virus scan. Typical gives me a small pop up box that disappears so fast I cant read it.Of course full restore brings me to a start cancel box and start boots system down and back too a black screen.

Nice to hear that it is working well for you! Like you said "I was able to modify it " for those who didn't or weren't able to modify it found numerous problems (not of thier own making for the most part) usually modem problems, (curious you didn't mention what modem you have or had originally ;) ) power issues (probably related to overheating something head office would never confirm or deny) video and audio issues competed for third place as the system came with on-board video and audio and the system boards seemed prone to defect. (overheating maybe.... just a coincidence?)

Like I said nice to hear you overcame the hurdles before you met them. Aside from second guessing me.... do have anything helpfull to add? If you can explain why he's having problems running a QR we would both like to hear them.

Greengoose: sorry if that sounded a bit terse. This puzzle is becoming a bit annoying and quite frankly I'm beginning to run out of ideas.

GG1 has a QR cd that is new enough that it will install to any hdd.
The cd has the bomid and when his old hdd quit, we tried the QR cd install and it worked.
It is the older ones that have the problems, because of them, I recommend that folks just do a clean install of 98SE after they do fdisk/format business. I had my 5222 setup both ways until parts fell of the mobo. Then I junked it out.

Thanks again to all who are working on this problem.Especially Calpitor. While I was clicking through the QR disks files I came across some files that were interesting. One was CPQX that popped up in a windows dos box that saidCompaq Quick Restore is designed for Compaq Computers This is not a Compaq PC........ Evidently the dawgone thing is looking for some type of system identifier after all. I still have the HP-Quauntum HD installed. Also their is a bomid file ( with nothing I recognize ), and a uiabomwr file. I will continue to look for a Presario boot diskette also. Compaq people were nice enough to search their data about that bomid# and say the system doesnt have one. But then go on to say that there might be one?? Wonder which answer it could be? Any way Im not going to work on this problem much longer. I will probably tackle the problem of getting my COA # back on that computer thru other ways if this QR deal doesnt work out. I will start a new thread about that subject.

But I keep getting to a part of the installation procedure where my screen asks me for a number related to a BOMID file. When I call Compaq, they won’t give me this number. What can I do?

A: When you installed your new hard drive, you lost a file called BOMID that contains info the software uses to verify what model your Compaq is (and to install itself correctly). This may also be a safeguard to ensure people don’t use Compaq’s Quickrestore CD with other companies’ PCs.

Sometimes there’s a reasonably quick way to retrieve your BOMID number: When the procedure asks for the number (or directly after you fail to give it one), the installer should offer you the option to continue. If you select continue, it should send you to a DOS prompt. Type uiabomwr bom id number at the prompt and press ENTER, and you may get the information you seek.

This trick may not work on some older Compaq models. If it doesn’t, you can always temporarily reinstall and boot the old drive to get your PC’s ID information from its BOMID file, and then reinstall the new drive and proceed with your installation. To get your BOMID info off the old hard drive, boot your PC with the Compaq boot diskette, but when your PC demands the BOMID number, cancel the procedure. That should get you to a DOS prompt. There should be a drive partition called N: which you normally don’t see or deal with. Type n: and press ENTER to get to this prompt; then type cd map and press ENTER (on some systems you may need to type cd tools instead of cd map). Next, type type bomid.txt and press ENTER a final time.

This should display some text with a line that includes “uiabomwr_201” (or something similar). The number (201, for our example) is what you need. Now reinstall the new hard drive, load your Quickrestore CD, and enter the number you got when it prompts you for your BOMID number. You can do what ever to revive/ restore that pc of junk but what you will get is the same thing.

PROBLEM SOLVED: MACH2 looks like I won't "dump the PC" after all. While running Max Blast 2 it told me I had a cd and zip drive on the primary and 2 hard drives on the secondary. I pulled the new drive and reversed the IDE connectors on the mobo and instant Quick restore. I guess the Compaq tech must have reversed them when he installed the new mobo under warranty about 5 years ago. Thanks to all(especially Calpitor) who put their personal time in on this problem. Looks like"Lets see if we can get this puppy to roll over, sit up and beg for you" worked.

Congratulations and thanks for refreshing my memory. A few years back a co-worker told a tale very similar to yours. We found this this was a sure fire way to get the "EZ Series" to run a QR. This line was nothing but problematic usually for constant lockups, getting anything USB to be recognized, including thier own Keyboard and Mouse, when they wouldn't QR they usually stopped dead immediatley part way through POST. I filed it away under "Quick Restore Peculiarites" and forgot all about it. Glad you got it worked out. :)
