We've got a 7 machine P2P network running w2k on all but one machine. All are running Norton AV. I'd like to be able to update all the machines from mine rather than doing it at each one individually.
I've been d/l'ing from this page then distributing the file to each machine.

Shouldn't be a problem... I do the exact same thing routinely over a Netware network. Sure beats running LiveUpdate from each PC (even if I TRUSTED LiveUpdate, which I DON'T).

Thanks, I guess what I meant was how do I "push" the AV ref file installation over the network. Everyone here just wants to do LiveUpdate which doesn't stay as current as the ref files I'm getting direct from Symantec.
Having looked farther into it yesterday, it looks like I'd need NAV Corporate Edition to do it.
If you must "push" the update, you'll probably need the corporate license (et al) edition. In my case, I just send a broadcast to all users to execute the file before the end of the business day. Of course, I have a smallish company with a moderate amount of employees, who know my penalties for failure to install a required upgrade (tremble, tremble), so I don't have the same management concerns that I might in a larger environment. :D
Yes, NAV Corp Edition would probably be what you'd want to use the way you are thinking of doing it. If you wanted to spend more money.
It doesn't sound to me that you understood what I was getting at with my post. You can probably set Live Update to check every day or other day (whatever), and point it to YOUR server, which of course would have the most current definitions.

You can use the LiveUpdate Administration Utility to download the defs once and share that folder with the other PCs. LUAU creates a file that you copy into each PC's LiveUpdate folder so they point to that particular share.
I had *lots* of trouble when I asked Symantec how to do this with Nav2002 (or 2003) because basically (I found out in the end) that they do not want you doing this or knowing how to do it.
They actually deleted a post by someone who had worked out how to do it.

I tried the Liveupdate Admin Ute. I could only get it to d/l the normal Liveupdate files, meaning the once a week variety. The only other "non-standard" files it would let you include in the update folder had to have the extension .trx or similar.
As it only takes me about 5 minutes to put it on the other 6 machines and run the exe, putting anymore time into figuring this out fast became not worth it.
If I remember correctly, it is possible to do it easily with NAVCE.
why not just put a line into the users' login scripts (or a batch file in the Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder) to execute the file off a network share?
Or use a remote admin utility and take over their PCs for a few seconds...

Windows XP has something like this built-in
I also forgot that you could use the Windows task scheduler to do stuff. But to remotely manage scheduled tasks, you could use Hyena: http://www.systemtools.com/hyena/index.html (it does a lot more and you've probably heard of it)
Of course you might not even need to do this if you have everything set up once and you don't need to change it often: Task Scheduler: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000..._checklist.htm (link is for Datacenter Server version of Windows but ignore that, it applies to Pro as well)
why not do it easier.just use a bachfile and then set it thru task manager to run couple of times a day, that way u will make sure all of the comp get it even if they release it late

ylen13, that looks like what I need. I've got it working on both my w2k machines at home. Don't have the task scheduler set up on those machines though.
I'll give it a try on the network machines on Monday. Gonna set it for 3PM CST as the new defs come out sometime after noon here. I'll let you know. Thanks.
Update: This batch file works perfectly. It also runs completely behind the scenes so no popup cmd window like I expected.
