Operation Delta 3 - 007
Hi All, Operation Delta continues rambling while waiting for the rest of BT's components. Mostly the work has centered around sarkazztic and myself - I should say our computers.
For those of you with Compaqs the last thread is very interesting and can save you money if you lose a harddrive.
Right now we are working towards a workaround for the 32GB barrier. Well better get back to it.
Saved the last thread to disk.

I bet you guys just love the little words they have imprinted on those parts "must use compaq spare"......I found the bomid thing pretty interesting my neighbors compaq is a pressario 2240 pentium 200 mhz had I believe a 3 gig drive in it...we put a 30 gig in it a while back but since he lost the original cds I had him buy a copy windows 95 and we loaded it on there and after a few softpaqs and some other drivers I got it up and running for him....but I did learn that I do not like those machines but I still dislike Hewlett Packards more....I had a couple run ins with there tech support https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ about 2 years ago with a hard drive that failed at the same time the hardware warranty expired and they swore that the little blinking curser in the left hand corner of the monitor was a software problem and my software warranty had already expired....so I kept trying to reinstall from the restore cd thinking if it was software this would fix it.....I left the machine running for 3 days straight trying to uncompress those darn files (this was way before I found out about Vdr) and I got fed up and called them back and said this cannot be software related. I got a somewhat knowledgeable person this time when I demanded a supervisor...we went through the process of trying to get the machine to boot to safe mode and other things and I finally convinced them that the hard drive must have given up the ghost....and he tells me that my hardware warranty had expired 3 days before. I got severely hot...almost like those athlon chips without a heatsink....and griped and griped and hung up and called back and got someone else and just as I was about to put my very convincing wife on the phone they decided that since I originally called in before the warranty had expired (even tho the person I spoke to the first time did not log the call as they are supposed to do) that they would send me out a new drive....not only did they send me a new drive but they tracked the shipping of the drive and called me back that evening and refunded all of my phone in fees and walked me through the hdd install step by step. But I still have these reacurring nightmares about HP computers.....of the 3 machines that you can buy at any circuit city or bestbuy....ie compaq hp or Emachine if I could only buy off the rack I would do the Emachine every day.....but thank god I got inspired and learned how to put my own machines together and in the event that Ole Man Murphy sticks his nose where it doesn't belong and something goes wrong I have all of you here to help me sort out my problems...Thanks again to all of the Delta Crew and of course the Staff at VDR for maintaining this forum for us to learn and also occasionally hop up on our collective soap boxes and rant and rave.....I will return you now to your regularly scheduled program. Now dont even get me started on the Packard Bell that was my first computer...I will leave that for another evening......The parts for my game/science project will be here tuesday I am looking forward to getting that one going....also waiting for more money to come in so I can buy the celeron 700 cpu to stick in it for phase 2 of the project.....phase 1 is a celeron 333 and when the prices drop a little more phase 3 and final I am goign to max the board out with the Pentium 3 933 and then give it to my wife replacing her Slot A athlon 750 when I can find a suitable home for it.

I was way over on the other side of the net when I heard the unmistakable sound of an Emachine being chosen over other off-the-shelf brands. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I'm thinking of hitting mine with the restore disk and start fresh. That hard drive has been through hell and two different computers. Right now it doesn't know if it is an Emachine or my ECS/Duron machine. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Good Morning All,
DrMDJ, I'm glad someone else is as impatient as I am. I did not order all at one time. Why? Because I took the time to research prices and the companies I wanted to purchase from. I have yet to have anything bad happen except delays and that probably due to tragedey of Sept. 11th. I ordered a chain saw from Sears on or about the middle of August and still haven't gotten it either. Same reason I'm told.
I double checked the tracking numbers and nothing is coming from Pluto. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ But if you have time, you could.......LOL
Nice writeup Sarkazztic, good detail, looks like our combined efforts of the Delta Crew will benifit those with store bought computers when they have failures. Really this is a whole new area that I have not seen much posted on. Lots to think about here. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Maxx, What ECS board are you running your duron on? I have the k7vza rev 3 for my athlon I will have to say so far I am pleasantly surprised at the quality for the price. Do any of you use PC-Cillin.....I found it on my motherboard cd last night and installled it on my win98 side of the dual boot...I have norton intenet security on the win2k side but since the 98 is a test in progress I thought I would experiment....I am also using cpu idle and MBM 5.09 on the 98 side and really surprised and kinda skeptical of the results I have seen so far while using cpu idle. last night at full load my athlon only got to 33 degrees celcius and at idle it was in the low to mid 20s I believe I will use both cpu idle and mbm during my Overclocking experiments next week....(I am also slightly OCed on the athlon) 1.2ghz natural running at 1.332ghz very stable on both O.S. even while playing Tiger Woods Golf......I really need to branch out and find another game that I like.....I have Nascar 2000 but driving in a circle is very boring to me.....gotta go to work and make some more money to keep up with this strange illness I have acquired gottabuildanothercomputeritis

sarrkazztic,
I have the K7VMA. I went with this one because it had an AGP slot as well as on-board Savage 4. Right now I am using the on-board, but I will be putting in a "real" card one of these days. Audio is unimportant to me, so I didn't mind the on-board sound.
So far the board has been stable and yes...the price was right. I got the Duron900 with HSF combo. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Now GG1, don't even think about getting me started on MS's Windows Product Activation...
One of these days MS is going to join up with Hewlitt/Compaq. Boot up the computer and get a blue screen that says "Due to your recent attempts at upgrading your system, please insert $17.50 to start the OS. This will automatically notify the nearest service tech and he will come by your house shortly, unlock your system and remove the fee. Thank you.".

Got a good one.
we do a sys C: to make a harddisk bootable.
Now if I wanted to make it non bootable could one do a Del sys C: to get rid of it?
I have used fdisk up to now. Just trying to cheat is all!
In otherwords if I have the os on C: and copied to D:[not active] had problems made D: active this becoming the new C: and want to go back in to the old C: and pull stuff out.
Hope this makes sense.
Oh yes, 2 different harddisk, D: on second one to start with.

If c was the primary drive and then you copy c to d and have problems later and make d the active drive and that makes d turn to c and the original c turn to d at that point you could delete everything in the root of the "new" d drive and then it would be a regular storage type drive....

Hi Train,& everyone else, My Vcore is 1.744v
CPU Speed--100/100 (100/133 is slower)CPU Ratio--10x, CPU Frequ--100,Dram Frequ--100
Sysoft Sandra 2000 Pro tells me my 1Gbt is runing @ 996.I know its not much but to me 1Ghz should be 1Ghz not runing at 996.Or should I ignore it and just carry on.Anyway here is what I have the settings on.--
DramTiming Config--Normal. SDR/DDR Cas Latency-- SPD. SDR/DDR Ras Active Time--6T. SDR/DDR Ras Precharge Time 3T
(normal/SPD/6T/3T)Must I always clear the CMOS before changing any or all of them. I hope not cause I know NOT how to do that. Or can I change each one any time I want to see which runs best for me. CPU MemBandWith=449
FPU MemBandWith=541. Thats highest I can go at moo. 1 stick of 256MbtDDRRam + 1Ghz Thunderbird Athlon. Back to you guys. THANKS

scarecrowdr,
Are you saying that on the CPU PNP Setup screen in bos setup you have the cpu ratio set to 10, the cpu frequency set to 100, and the dram frequency set to 100? If so these cpu settings would be correct for a model "b" athlon. I'm not sure then why sandra would report 996mhz, but the cpu is running as it should be. However, if you have PC2100 SDRAM then you are underclocking that. The DRAM frequency needs to be 133 to get full benefit from it.
But, if this is in fact an athlon model "c", then the cpu ratio should be 7.5 and the cpu freqency 133. Coincidently this would give a cpu speed of 996, which could make sense in light of your 997 reading you see. Again, if your dram is PC2100 the dram frquency should be 133.
The thing to note is that in the case of both cpu models the multiplier (ratio) is "locked", thus unchangeable. So if you have a model b your speed will be 10 times the bus frequency set. With a model c it is going to be 7.5 times the frequency set.
If you cold boot and hold PAGE UP while doing so the bios should reset the cpu related values and detect the correct ones. If you do this what shows up on the cpu setup page afterwards?

Good Morning All, Busy already I see. Will take a good look at the components I received yesterday this morning and start reading the manual on the motherboard. I want to get that down before I do anything else.
I don't have a digital camera so I'm going to pick up one of those throw away Kodaks Wal Mart sells and take a series of pictures as this build progresses, then scan them so we can use them for show and tell or whatever other use we may need them for.
Jaak, I'm going to run some of those checks on the Compaq you, DrMDJ, Bistro, and the others came up with regards to the 32GB barrier this weekend. Maybe the results will help us solve this. Train's post dealing with the Email from Compaq has really got me going. This Compaq as it is right now is a joy to operate over what it was. I wonder how much better it can be made to operate.
DrMDJ, Please explain the difference in models of the Athlon CPU. I did not realize there were different models.

GG1,
Now don't go scrimping on us. A project such as this, after all the buildup, requires only the finest in digital images. Surely you are willing to plop down a grand or two on camera to provide such images for your VDR friends. Also, maybe set a tape recorder near by. Would be interesting capturing the "sounds of building". We speak all the time of chipsets, motherboards, etc, etc. But what about the other technical phrases used in regard to computers (ie. G-- D--- thing!, What the H--?, This piece of S---!). Could be very educational, not to mention amusing.
As for the models of the AMD, at least the current ones I was referring to above... Those Athlons using a 100 (200 ddr) FSB are often referred to model "B"s. These are the ones that have been around for a while. The newer (not newest) ones using the 133 (266 DDR) FSB are the model "C"s. Both are DDR capable of course. The newer boards wil take both models. The older boards will only take the Bs. In terms of speeds, there is overlap between the models. You can get, say, 1.2ghz model Bs and Cs. It just depends on your needs/wants and the board you intend to use as to which one uses.

Train,
Looks like scarecrowdr's board has no jumpering/switches for multiplier and/or bus speed. It's all done in bios.
Personally, my money is on the processor actually being a model C, using the 133 fsb. If it were a model B and the FSB was set to 133 (in bios) there's a pretty good chance the system wouldn't have even booted. Besides, as I said, seeing that 996mgz is pretty close to 997 (what the C would run at) seems very suspicious.

Goose I think I figured out your ata100 controller issue.....I ordered the ata66 card for my machine and could not get it to find the drive either...In the instructions it says to "configure the drive" that usually means to set it as master or slave.....Did you leave the jumpers on the hard drive.....was it the only drive on the ribbon.....when I had my drive as the only drive on the ribbon it would not detect it when I had the master jumper on the drive.....I took the jumper off and voila it found the drive.....I then put the master jumper back on and put a cdrom set to slave on the cable also and everything is fine....If you left the jumper on the drive and only had one drive on the cable give this a try...I think it will fix your 32 gig limit...

here is a little clip of the article I read on promise's website to prove my theory...I also went back and read GG1's posts about what kind of hard drives he bought and what he installed in the compaq WESTERN DIGITAL is the problem "If your HDD is from WD, and it's the only device on the cable, remove ALL the jumpers from the HDD. If the problem still exists, contact tech support with the following information."
-
now if you all could help me.....My ata66 card will find both my western digital hard drive and my cdrom drive when booting and the promise bios detects them but under my dual boot win98se will find the hard drive but no cdrom and win2k will not find either...the card shows a big splat under win2k...and a little splat under win98....but I can access the hard drive in win98 my computer and windows explorer...??? This is a bare card purchase it did not come with a manual I had to download it from www.promise.com also the drivers and I cannot get it to work right yet.....there is a bios update for the card but I cannot get it to work as it says "file is incorrect" while trying to flash weird...
-
On many drives there is a jumper setting for being the master in a master/slave (2 drive) setup, but when only a single drive is being used it is common for there to be another jumper setting, which freuqently is to have no jumper on. It's called single-drive master. But no matter what the jumper reuqirements, if the jumper is not correct then the system (be it the motherboard bios or an Ultra card bios) then the drive won't be detected. From Goose's descriptions it is not that the drive is not being seen as present, just that it can't be read. Wrong or right GG1?

scarecrowdr,
Hmmm. If those are the defaults that got loaded, and it shows 10 for the cpu ratio then it looks like that is a model B Athlon afterall. If so the it runs with 10 and an fsb of 100. Why Sandra shows it as 996mhz is odd, but probably not work worrying about.

I missed information on the motherboard you have.
all boards for AMD (duron and athlon) I saw have a jumper to select memory clockspeed.
even the two I saw with DDR have it.
(of course, I have seen only seven models)
BUT, if that athlon does NOT support fsb 133 (doublerate=266), you will experience a non boot system
it just wont.
in a way, that the beaty of it.
while set to 100, it boots, and will often run at lower speed.
(they was clock multiplier locked, but some mobo circumvent that?)
but if it does not support it, it wont boot, and thus it protects itself.
I experienced this non-boot myself, and seen it happen twice.
I also saw some run while set to the lower clock for fsb.
so, tell us what motherboard this is?
look at the manual
I would think AMD have a CPU identification tool (just like intel have.)
armed with this, you can find out what this thing is capable off.
as an aside.
what's easier..
sayin 1100 or 1133?
many vendors refer to a 1133 as a 1100
and the 1133 is a fsb 266 chip.
(I just sold the epox and 1133 I ran some trials on. I don't wanna see it fry like in the movies. after the movie show, I soon got a taisol wich latches onto all six hooks instead of the coolermaster which latches over only two....)
