Mysterious data file
I keep getting this data file that shows up on my desktop as an shortcut icon. I clicked on it's properties and all it shows is that there is only enough bytes there to create the icon.
This started when I tried to unsubscribe to some spam mail.
The file is named: rdxr020305.dat
Every time I delete it and empty the recycle bin it comes back when I open my email.
How can I get rid of this permanently? Should I? The deletion of this file has not effected the performance of my computer so far.
-
The first thing I would is scan for viruses using the latest virus definition updates. Then, if the spam e-mail is still in your in box, I'd delete it from there AND from the deleted items box. If the icon still comes back after that, then an unwanted program/registry key has probably been installed on your PC.
As a general rule, clicking on the 'unsubscribe' link in an e-mail does not get you unsubscribed. Instead, the link is either a phony one that does nothing, or it lets the spammer know that your e-mail address is active which usually results in even more spam. Only in rare cases will you be unsubscribed, since most spammers are not interested in being courteous or they wouldn't be spamming you in the first place.
-
The spam is not in my inbox. I have deleted it and deleted it from my email trash box.
How would I get rid of an unwanted program/registry key?

I DO NOT have Morpheus. I do have adaware. But I had not ran it for some time. The .dat
file showed up before I ran adaware just
recently. In fact, I ran adaware AFTER this .dat file showed up on my desktop thinking that might get rid of it.
I went to the Norton site and did a virus check. It said that I had no virus.
I didn't quite understand what I was supposed to do at the site referenced above since I
don't have morpheus.
So the question remains: how do I get rid of an unwanted program/registry key?
-
I am not sure how to do a full search of the PC as you suggest.
The desktop file looks like a shortcut. It is an icon of a computer.
How would I find the original?
I went to the post you mentioned, but I couldn't understand what was being talked about there.
I am not a computer expert or I might know how to take care of this myself. No offense!
I just mean that I need someone to talk me through this.
-
Last night, I got the latest version of adaware. I also got the latest refupdate.
I ran the scan. It told me there was no more spyware on my system. I opened my interner browser. I minimized it. The rdxr file was still there on my desktop.
I went to FIND. I put the file in the NAMED box. I found three references to it in C:\.
I deleted those. I also found a reference to it in DESKTOP. I deleted that.
Today, I went in and did as you suggested: I
put it under CONTAINING TEXT. I found one reference to it. I deleted that.
Yes, it does have a small arrow on it. The arrow is in the lower left hand corner.
Is TWEAK UI a program that can be run in Windows 98? Would I get that from CNET?
I ask this in case the file comes back.
-
The .dat file is not there now. I have opened my email and browser and it did not appear.
I think you are right about the desktop one coming back because the other ones in C: recreating it. Time will tell.
I am not going to try Tweak U except as, possibly, a last resort since I don't like the caveat to be careful with it.
If the .dat file comes back I will post again.
Unless you want to provide me with your personal email address?
-
OK. If I need to email you I will look you up in the posts.
I beleive the file is gone.
Thanks for looking at my website.
I used to think I was abducted. Now, I don't know for sure!
-
Thanks for believing me. Thanks for showing an interest in my stories.
Also, thanks for writing back.
The rdxr020305.dat file is back!
It seems to have something to do with the internet. I mean, I can open my browser and it will not show up. But the minute I go to some site (any site) it shows back up.
I thought it was the one site where a person can play scratch cards to win, but I had not gone there yesterday when the .dat file showed up. The only other two places I go to are a writing workshop and a comic strip place I have never had any problem with either of those and none of the other members mentioned it either. I know they would.
Any further suggestions on what I can do to
PERMANENTLY delete this pest?
Perhaps if you don't know maybe you can ask somneone that does.

Hi:
I found a recent 'Google Groups' thread that relates to this particular dat file which states:
"Sypware by Morpheus download Ad-aware and scan the system
to remove trace of the spyware. Alternatively you can this
Search for file called bpboh.dll and note down the path.
Most likely it will be C:\Windows if yes goto Start> Run
and then type there regsvr32 /u C:\Windows\bpboh.dll click
on Ok reboot."
I realize Morpheus doesn't seem to be the culprit here but maybe the fix is relevant. It might be worth checking out.
The Google Groups thread can be found
HERE
Hope this helps.
sorry for the long url, doesn't seem to want to display as intended.

To ezduzit: I put the file path name regsver32/U C:\Windows\bpboh.dll in run/find
and was told that it could not be found. This despite the fact that the .dat file is sitting on my desktop as pretty as you please. It did not come back last night, but it is there again today.
To Jonking: This is very difficult because the script in your reply scrolls off the page. Yes I have 56k dialup. I am using IE 5.
I found the .dat file in the Temp file.
I found the file in windows. I right clicked it and it gave me no info as to what it is connected to. It just said what it was and when it was created.
Any suggestions on how to find the original file? If have done all that was suggested here and had no luck making any of that work.
Nor can I find the original.

Sounds like something is sitting your registry that keeps bringing this file back.
I would go to Start Run and type regedit and hit enter.
Click on Edit-Find and type in rdxr020305 and click on Find Next.
Post the path if you find anything in the registry with this name.
Post back if you are unsure how to search the registry.

sounds like a trojan, or online activated bug/ cookie is possible.
blow away every file in
c:\temp
c:\windows\temp
c:\windows\cookies
c:\windows\temporary internet files.
Go to start button and restart in dos mode.
type in:
del[spacebar]c:\windows\cookies\index.dat
type: exit
when you get to windows again do a normal shutdown. wait a few minutes and restart pc.. then "Disable" 'preview mode' in your email. Might quit visiting the gamer sites for a while.
hope it helps. might take more than one attempt and you may see problems arise.
(there are apps out there that can do same automatically? but manual removal is best to eliminate for sure.)

To Jonking:
You may not see a scroll bar at the bottom of the page, but I do. I can't see all the text on the window unless I slide the bar over.
I don't know what brought this on because it wasn't that way when the thread started.
I will try paisans "fix" and let you both know what happened.

to paisan:
I found the file in the registry, but there is no file path or whatever you call it.
The file is just listed after a funny looking
box that has the letters AB in it and after that there is C: and then the name of the .dat file.
What now?
