DestestX 8.0 and bad crashes

I'm steamed at MS cuz I think they got me with DirectX 8.0a.

I took a suggestion from Train and greengoose about buying a GeForce for my new machine. That went beautifully but DirectX 8.0 was also installed and from that point on nothing but trouble.

If I open Explorer and click any folder or file I get:
Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module kernel32.dll at 0167:bff7b992. I can hit details and close 4 or 5 times and then use the folder but hit another and I get the same message.

If I launch IE 5.5 sp2 I get DW15 illegal operation and will be shutdown. It does not shut down on it's own so when I close it myself I get the dreaded IE caused a fatal exception at 0167:Bff9DFFF which now requires a cold boot.

If I launch dxdiag as soon as the window pops open I get DXDIAG caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll at 0167:bff7b992.

I can close that and use the diagnostics but it crashes in short order testing 3d or anything else.

Not knowing if I have the latest version installed from the Nvidia CD (it's Ver 4.08.00.0400) I downloaded the latest DirectX from MS but when I try to install it the machine goes into invalid page fault, blah blah blah again.

I can use Opera fine which is how I got the downloads but IE and explorer and even using the Start Menu is a lost cause.

I can only assume DetestX.

Win98 with SE updates, IE 5.5 sp2, AMD Thunderbird 1gig, 256 RAM, ASUS with VIA chipset, Nvidia e-geforce2 MX 400 64 MB on board.

Have you tried running dxdiag (click start then run and type dxdiag).

If you can run that, you can save the info and look for problems. IF you want to post the info here I'll give it a look to see if I spot any problems. Otherwise you want to look at the following:

If you see anything here, boot into safe mode and delete the entries in Device manager then reboot and reinstall your card. Multiple entries mean trouble!

I had similar problems. Is your card a MX?
They tend to enable 2 monitors. What I did was go to Device Manager, go to Monitors and desable one (Don't remove it!!! Just tick the box that says desable from this hardware profile, and untick the box below.)
Go back to Display properties, go to settings and make sure that the monitor you enabled is the same one that shows in the box. If not, just go back and reverse procedure.
That did it for me. I still have problems such as the options for direct 3D and AGP support desabled while using DXDIAG.
I'm using directX 7.a by the way. And my card is a GeForce 2 MX 100//200 32MB.
If anybody knows what is causing the problem, please help me/us!!! As I type I am downloading directX8....and crossing my fingers, all of them!

should you need it here's a program that uninstalls directx so you can reinstall an earlier version.

Did you try disabling your old video card the one that came with your computer?

And for your errors. Try reinstalling. That helped me.

if you have important files. then use PartitionMagic Download it from Kazaam or Irc if you want.
and partition your drive and backup your stuff.

pons, that's interesting. I'll look tonight. I had 7.0a previously without problems so I automatically assumed it was DirectX 8, hmmm.

sarmenb, I completly removed (I think, can't tell these days programs are so intrusive) all my old 3DFX Voodoo drivers and tools but are you suggesting a complete re-install of Win98? If so that will be a last resort. Lets hope it doesn't come to that.

If you're not sure about removing all the old drivers, go to www.guru3d.com and download the "Detonator Destroyer." It comes with instructions in a text file.
Oops, just re-read your post and you menitioned 3Dfx drivers; the Destroyer works only on Nvidia drivers. It's still a tool worht getting, though.

Hi griffinspc, if I understand you, you suspect you might have old 3dfx drivers or part of drivers in your machine?
To remove them you'll have to go to the registry and do a search for 3dfx and also for glide, I think, you know, presing the old F3 key and deleting ALL mentions. Keep on doing it till the search comes up clean.
The Detonator destroyer will only work for detonetor drivers, or so I'm told.

Any news anybody on my direct 3D and AGP support problems by the way?

DL the Nvidia 21.88 drivers and install them, after using the Dentonator Destroyer(or manually) to get rid of the old ones. Sometimes when you upgrade DirectX, you find you HAVE to reinstall your video drivers and/or your monitor drivers. I have heard in NG's that the 21.88 drivers seem to be the best overall. I hope you get it going, it's a good card.

Do you have the same problems in safe mode?

If you can get to dxdiag in safe mode then it will save you time when you see items you need to remove in your dxdiag file.

I would suggest to copy driver install files to hard disk before you do a cleanup in SAFE mode.

still in SAFE mode
in device manager, you may see several display cards and monitors.
when you have doubles, remove all.
