Can't get out, part 2

Ok, second time around. Some of you saw this before and I'ts still a stumper. I recently built a new machine. It's up and running just fine. I have it networked with one other machine, no hub or router, NIC to NIC. The network works perfectly.

I don't know if this question really belongs here so if not and a mod wants to move it please feel free.

I have a HSP Micro Modem installed (It came out of another machine and it's been a good little modem for over a year. My ISP is fine. My dial up is at 49,333 consistant, connects first time every time.

Zone Alarm blocks incoming pings so I know I have a connection but here's the problem, not one of my programs can get out. Not IE 5.1, not WS_FTP, not Norton AV. Nothing. They do not see the connection.

I've reset the network card twice and the modem twice (different slots). I have no "apparent" IRQ conflicts, no system conflicts.

I've used every network config known to man, I re-installed AT&T, I've run scanreg /fix, I've pinged until my fingers pinged out and I've cursed so much my wife shut my door. HELP !!

I have the BIOS setting the slot addresses and my thought is to try letting 98SE do it but I don't want to screw something else up. What do you think?

ASUS A7V-E MB, 1 gig Thunderbird, 256 mem, Maxtor HD, 98se with all patches and packs, 3DFX Voodoo, CD, CD-RW, and the usual other stuff.

Sorry this is long but I think you need the info and I'll gladly supply any more you all need.

A disgruntled PC'er at the moment.

Don't know if it will help with your problem or not, but This is what I have used many times to trouble-shoot connections.

Believe you need to go to advanced button and add computers to your zone. Also perhaps reduce security to medium in your local zone.

Thanks Mach. I've tried settings in ZA and with no success stopped it from loading completely as well as everything else except systray and regmon.

I printed out your ZA link and reading it in hand I did notice a couple of things that may help diagnose the problem though. Thanks again.

What happens when you do a trace route to an IP ? Does your ISP show in the list ? What is the ping time ? Where does the connection end ?

The only thing I can ping is the local machine. No sites at all. Ping time is normal for that.

two things i don't understand. (well ok way more than two but...)

1. what does "finest kind" mean at first i thought it was about mosaic but then i saw it was in your sig on some very old threads?

2. are you trying to acess the modem across your lan for ics? or is this modem in the machine with the problem?

I must not be understanding you right. You say that your "ISP is fine" and "connect to it first time every time". Then you say you can only ping the local machine. If you are connected to your ISP, why can't you ping your ISP?

If you do a tracert to an outside IP using UOTRACE, and have a connection to your ISP, you should be able to see where your connection ends. Uotrace omits the first hop in the trace(local machine). The first hop you should see is your ISP.

TCP/IP for your DUN connection has the DNS addresses for your ISP? The log on to network box is unchecked.

In Network (control panel) TCP --> Dial Up Adapter has WINS disabled and the disable DNS
radio button checked as well as obtain an IP automagically?

In internet properties - what do your LAN properties look like under connections?

Are you usuing any form of proxy?

Are you trying to use ICS?

"Finest Kind" is a reference which struck me when I was in NAM. I was on R&R in Thai and saw MASH the movie. Hawkeye said it refering to a Martini and other luxeries. Ever since I appreciate little things like that. Not always just instant flash backs.

No I have a modem in each machine. I don't like to have to boot both at all times.

OK, you said you downloaded UOTRADE, right?

It is a stand alone program and needs no special installation. Just unzip it, put the contents in a directory wherever you want, name the folder whatever you want, make a shortcut to UOTRACE.EXE.

Connect to your ISP, start UOTRACE, in the pull down box type 204.52.135.62 (or any other IP address known to be good), click the Trace Route button at the top. If you are using ZoneAlarm, give it permission to get out.

After the traceroute function completes, and if it is successful, click the Poll button to get a continuos update. Click the same button(now Stop Poll) to stop it.

Post back the results.

Thanks for the explanation, it’s always good to remember the little things that make life; well life.

Also found a link that kinda/sorta sounds like your problem. The multihomed network configuration should still apply. It sounds like you have authenticated your password on your isp without ever joining the machine to the isp's dns. and make sure your local nic's have their ip addresses manually input.
