Win98/2000 Dual Boot - Advise Needed

Hi There, I currently Run Win98 first edition (Backed-Up with Ghost so it can be moved) on my C Drive and have several partitions available for the upgrade.

I am to getting Win2000 tomorrow and want to install it preferably without messing up my Win98 install. Ideally wat i want is Win98 on Drive C and Win2000 on Drive E or vise versa if i can move Win98 without messing up its links to other installations on other partitions

The things i am not clear about are as follows:

1. Can i install Win2000 onto a FAT32 file system/partition (do i get a choice)?

2. Can Win2000 be installed to a drive other than drive C (will it ask me like 98 does) or will Win2000 have 2 go on Drive C and then 98 to Drive D,E etc.?

3. Is there any particular order that they have to be installed in.

4. Will the Install of win2000 create a boot menu for me (i wouldn't mind booting to win 98 as normal and when i wanna use 2000 boot from a Floppy rather than boot manager) is this possible and safe to do so?

5. also if any1 knows will Norton Ghost work with Win2000 as it does with Win98.

You didn't specify which version of Ghost you you are using...

However, if you are using the command prompt and getting to Ghost, then it doesn't matter. Ghost reads the format and file information and jams it into one big Ghost file. You may run into problems with an NTFS partition, but Ghost has switches to overcome common problems...

But for your situation, it should work just fine.

As far as booting to Windows 98 first, get into Windows 2000, go to My Computer properties, and go to Startup uptions. You can set the boot.ini sequence there so you can have Windows 98 as your preferred OS.

i'm asuming that i can copy equivilent to Win98 cab files to another partition for the install & updates etc......

......is there a specific folder that i have to copy over or will it require the whole Disk on HDD?

If you want to copy the installation files to the drive and install from there, you need to copy the "i386" folder then you can run "winnt.exe" to start the setup.....
Make sure you have all the correct drivers for Win2k.....

When I loaded Win2000 on my machine I used PartitionMagic. Worked like a charm. Also install BootMagic, this will give you the choice of which O/S to load on boot.Easy setup-good operation. Make sure ghost is compatible with Win2000 before you try to use it.If it's not compatible-a crash will occur.

Add 1) W2K will offer you a choice of the partitions you have available and also which filesystem you want - if the partition you have in mind is already FAT32 choose "don't convert". Remember at the beginning of the installation to specify that you want to choose/specify a partition (on one of the first screens).

Add. 2) Don't be amazed if you find after the installation that W2K has assigned other letters to a few of your drive (primarily your W98 and W2K drives). Get used to it.

Add. 4) W2K (which "controls" your PC after installation) will show you a boot menu before it startes. In W2K's system folder in control panel you can the set up default system to boot and fx. automatically after a certain period (fx. 5 secs.). Set W98 as default system there.

Thanx for all the advice, i'm about to install win2000 using ceh383's technique to copy the cabs to HDD 1st.

for the partitioning i used the old fdisk/format commands after backing-up (took ages).

i look foward to the end of the install.

hhhmmmm, just installed all works cool, execpt that it didn't ask me where to install it and it has installed it on my C Drive lol https://discussions.virtualdr.com/.....think i better have another go. I'll have to look more closly this time.

Could this be because i'm installing from my HDD and not the CD.

Also if this makes any difference i started install from within Win98 with the "winnt32.exe" file insted of"winnt.exe"

Also i didn't get any option to choose filesystem...it just done it all for me without asking (worrying. wonder wat it'll do next time lol)

just had a second atempt and this time still same not good results, this time i installed from DOS using the "winnt.exe" file.

no luck yet, gotta wait for it to finish copying files b4 i can try again.

lol now its taking ages been copying for an hour only 60% done (opps), c'cuz it warned me that i wasn't using SmartDrive and i alowed it to continue thinking that it wouldn't make any difference....boy was i wrong.

If you want to speed up the process, create the 4 startup disks by running "Makeboot.exe" on the CD, use these to boot with. When you are asked for the source files point it to the "i386" folder you copied.

Hi, i'm gunna copy whole CD to HDD and run the "setup.exe" file insted of "winnt.exe" hopefully i'll get better results that way.

.....as by running the "winnt(32).exe" file it doesn't give me any options for install path or file system as i've seen in the guides to installing. can any1 explain this

in theory this should be the same as installing from the CD so i'll c how it goes!

EDIT: i am wrong again, tried above method (with whole CD on HDD) and it still installs onto drive C (darn thing), unless someone comes up with a quick solution to my problem then i think i'll just put in the CD and try it the normal way and i'll just have 2 put up with my CAB files on Drive C https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

EDIT2: i've just noticed that when setup.exe is run from the CD in DOS the install GUI looks completly different...it gives me the options i need....i shall try installing from HDD in DOS with the FULL CD copyed to HDD.

i've tried every possible way i can think of as u can see.....

.....the only way i found to install Win2000 onto a partition other than Drive C is to install from the CD in DOS mode, ahhh well i'll work around moving the CAB files later after its installed and works.

I only wanna move the CAB files to make the drive smaller so it can be backed up quicker and a smaller backup file etc. plus i dont really wanna be backing up the cab files anyway as they (i think) dont change and r perfectly happy on another partition in Win98.

I have much to learn about Win2000, totaly new 2 me.

Hi all, thx for the help, i resolved the installation issue by installing from CD as normal...

all seems to be ok, (after getting over 45second network delay issues) i'm getting used to the slight changes, i think i'm gunna really like this if its as good as its made out to be, i'm impressed so far.

BUT, (theres always sumut) when copying/moving data from 1 drive to another it seems to take longer than with Win98 (30 to 50% longer maybe) to copy the files over.

i remember i had this problem when i installed win98 and i had to turn on DMA.....

.....i found DMA setting in Win2k but it wouldn't let me change it to UDMA!!! Stuck in PIO mode!!! why?
