I'm prepared to buy another GPU but I wanted to ask if there are other common causes? I think MS Updates have done something to screw up the graphics driver. What are the odds of another cause such as power supply on the blink, or maybe something wrong with the slot?

What GPU do you have that "died"?
Is it completely non-functional, or just having issues?
Have you examined for burn marks, corrosion, etc.?
Have you tried another card in the slot used, or the problem card in another slot?
Have you tried downloading a copy of the driver from the manufacturer's web site and reinstalling that?
You can prevent Windows from updating your device drivers.
If you still need a new graphics card, I recommend an nVidia based card. I have much better success with those than with other types.

The dead card has Asus stamped on the frame, it uses an nVidia driver but I can't find a model name anywhere. It's about 4 years old, no corrosion or burning, no deteriration in performance. I think an update screwed my drivers and I don't need a new one. But I bought a new one, Radeon RX 6500 XT.
I tried the old one in a different slot and the new one in two slots but I'm getting nothing to the screen.
I will prevent windows from updating drivers. So how do you install a display driver without a display?
Does the motherboard have an on-board video adapter? Look for a VGA or DVI or HDMI or DisplayPort adapter connector on the motherboard back panel. Try connecting your monitor to that.
If you are not getting any display, even the BIOS messages, when you power up the computer, the BIOS may have reverted to the on-board video adapter. If that is the case, then there may be nothing wrong with your video card or the drivers.
What is the history of the problem?
Did it work up till a point and then the next day when you turned it on - no display?
Or was the pc moved from one location to another.... or was it worked on and then no display?

You started this thread two weeks after Patch Tuesday.... So odds are it isn't that.

If it's reverted, put the card back in and point to it in the BIOS?
Wasn't worked on or moved but there might have been a power cut when the machine was off..

The first thing to check is to see if you get ANYTHING on the monitor when booting with the video card installed. If no BIOS message screens appear, then try connecting the monitor to the onboard video adapter to see if anything appears. If it does, then you can check ALL BIOS settings and make any corrections needed.
Note: If you have the BIOS set to not display messages when booting, or set to "fast boot", that is generally a bad idea due to cases just like this. Also, a power failure has been known to cause a BIOS reset to defaults.
Did all the above but I don't get anything during or after bootup.
I can remove the c: drive and access it via one of those dongly things. What tasks should I perform, roll back updates, install drivers for the new card, purge old drivers?

What do you mean by "bootup"? Can you get the BIOS or not? If you can't even get into the BIOS, then I doubt it's a driver issue.Quote:

If you are using the onboard video, then other things to try are reseating the RAM or trying a different PSU. I've seen systems that have power, but don't POST.

I mean nothing is displayed at any time. I tried the BIOS keypress but how would I see a display if there's no video feed? Cannot get into the BIOS.
I did nothing to enable the onboard graphics, wouldn't I need to switch it on or change something the BIOS?
Don't s'pose there's a quick way of trying another PSU? All those connections, I'm sure to break something...
That's exactly the point. Just because there is no video does not mean it is a video card problem. If you can't even POST, then it's unlikely to be a driver issue.Quote:

Reseating the RAM is easy, so I'd at least try that.
For the PSU, you just need to connect the main power connectors to the motherboard. If your video card requires additional power, you'd need to plug that in also. You don't need to connect the power to all the drives or other peripherals. The first thing is to get the system to POST, so that you can get into the BIOS.
If you are not getting any video when the monitor (which I assume is tested and know to work on another computer) is connected to either the video card or the onboard video adapter, then video drivers are unlikely to be the cause. You should at least get some sort of BIOS signal even if you have Fast Boot on.
Actually no, I've been assuming the monitor works because it displays its internal msgs. I'll hook it up and make sure.

Cleaned and reseated the video card
Tried it in two different slots

I'm pretty sure Fast Boot is off but no msg at all from the BIOS. No error beep from the mobo (Rog Strix Z390-E) but I'm not sure it's set up to beep. I'll make sure of the monitor and come back.
Did you try the onboard video adapter (with and without the video card removed) to see if you are getting any signal on the monitor?

installed a brand new power supply
tried the onboard graphics but no sign of POST msgs.
Then I hooked the monitor to my laptop HDMI and got nothing (I don't know if I have to enable the hdmi port somewwhere) so it's beginning to look like the monitor is the culprit.
