12-12-16 windows update requires usserid & password to access my nas which has none.

this morning, windows 10 did a massive update finishing with the ominous words "improved security" or some such nonsense.

i can no longer access my nas via any software EXCEPT windows file explorer.

among other things, my accounting files reside on this nas (which it has no userid nor password). if i try to access it with the desktop shortcut i have had for years, windows tells me "the file could not be found". when i use the browse function to find it, i get the following message (which i'll post a link:" http://s1063.photobucket.com/user/Ta...ml?sort=9&o=49. entering blanks does not let me get through.

i googled this and could find nothing recent. i did un-map and re-map the nas per a post a year ago, but that changed nothing.

i also tried running a backup of my pc (i use syncback and have for years) TO the nas in question and i get a "network failure" error trying to access the nas.

i DO have a copy of the accounting datafile on my C drive and that version i can open with no qualms from windows.

i'm stumped. anyone have any suggestions?

What was the KB number of the update? Did you try a System Restore to before the update was installed?
Monthly updates usually come on the second Tuesday of the month, so it's very odd that you got one on a Monday.

What is the make/model of the NAS?

thanks for responding.

so i checked the update history. there were four done today all version 1607: cumulative update for windows 10 (KB3201845), security update for adobe flash (KB3202790), update for windows 10 (KB3199986) and feature update to windows 10 (no KB number). i noticed that all were "successfully installed" except the cumulative which was waiting for a restart.

well, i shut down and did a full cold reboot hoping for the best.

voila - things are back to normal. no security warning. allowed to access the nas files. YAY.

who knows what happened. there were a number of restarts during the whole process this morning. maybe the last one just didn't take.

Next time, a shutdown/reboot should be one of the first things you do.

I'm not sure why it was released early, but like I said, most Windows Updates are released on the second Tuesday of each month.

KB3202790 was from November. KB3199986 was from October. I'm not sure why they only got installed now, unless they were reinstalled.

i spoke too soon. syncback is still having problems accessing the nas. i'll check further tomorrow.

I checked the properties of the nas folder containing my accounting files and it was checked to "read-only". i unchecked that and was able to access those files with the appropriated software. curiously, the property later showed up as "read-only" yet the software has no access problem. weird

as for syncback, i tried the same but to no avail. microsoft's own synctoy has no problem accessing those same folders. again, weird.

reading your links, i see i'm not the only one with problems. i guess i'll wait for an update to the update. at least the accounting system is now working and i can use synctoy in the meantime.

Try uninstalling KB3201845 first. Then download wushowhide.diagcab, and block KB3201845. See if that helps.

your link talks about rolling back a device driver. i'm confused. should i not "uninstall update" through the update history.

i'm going to backup tomorrow morning before i proceed.

i just went through all the updates from monday. uninstalled each one. rebooted. tried to open files on the nas. none worked.

the KB 3199986, however, has no "uninstall" option. there is no "uninstall" option on either the right- or left-click. not is there an "unistall" button in the header banner.

i guess my only option is to backup and restore to last friday?

ps. what is actually happening now is the there are 2 files on the nas. one opens flawlessly. when i try to open the second one, i get that windows security window asking for userid and password.

Did you try a System Restore like I mentioned in post #2? After that, run wushowhide.diagcab to block the new updates.

i'm currently doing a backup via synctoy. when that's done, i'll do the restore and block the new updates.

i was apprehensive when it didn't ask me how far back to go date-wise. however, i am now able to open both files on the nas and syncback works with no errors.

i checked the windows updates available and there are two. both for version 1511. this mean we went back further than last friday, i assume?

on wushowhide, i hid four updates. none of which were the ones from monday. two are for printer drivers. one for adobe flash. the fourth is cumulative updates for windows 10 version 1511 (KB 3205385).

ps: it's already downloading updates for this 1511 build. is there a way to stop this and have it ask if i want to dl and update? i don' t see any settings.
