Reinstalled the entire O/S and all drivers earlier and now have trouble with IE 6 (ugh) crashing, so how to get to a more stable browser, at least IE8, so I can get to Windows Update and start the updates download? MS website obviously no longer offering it.

Ok. I'm guessing you clicked on one of the ads, instead of the actual download link. I run an adblocker, so I don't usually see the other buttons.
After you get IE8 and all the Windows updates installed, I highly recommend you install another browser like Firefox or Chrome and use an adblocker.
My bad...I was a little too hasty thinking it was trying to get me to install the latest version of IE in general, v. 11 I believe it is at this time. I'll get back to that site in just a little bit and then report back. BTW, is IE 8 the limit to what XP can run, or are later versions also OK?

IE8 is the highest IE on XP. XP and IE8 for XP are no longer being patched. That's why I said to use either Firefox or Chrome.
Microsoft's web site is telling me that IE8 won't run on XP, which is patently false. However, they do still have the download available, they just won't allow any search engines to return the link. The links can be found at the page below:

I successfully downloaded and installed (from a flashdrive) IE8, but it continues to crash when I attempt to install updates. Can I do the updating in Safe Mode or isn't it going to matter?
How many updates are you trying to install? Use Custom instead of Express updates and do maybe 5-10 at a time?
Why did you reinstall XP in the first place? I'm assuming the hardware is good. Considering the age of the laptop, it wouldn't hurt to run a hard drive diag.
I'm coming off two friends' requests for help with their respective systems: first ended up a very successful dual boot install of Win 7 (with XP Pro sp3) on an older Dell desktop and one in the last couple of days a not-so-successful "cleaning" of a badly infected (Conduit malware) and bloated HP desktop, the latter of which needed Micro$oft to come to the rescue for $99 and 30-days followup at my friend's insistence. To run SFC you would need a Windows CD with the correct Service Pack or other installation media files available.
Midknyte's signature link for the Ulitmate Boot CD has the files needed to create a bootable CD that can test memory and the hard drive.
Post the make and model ot the laptop, we can check to find out what the ram limit is for it.

The Windows CD and UBCD5 are two separate CDs.
The Windows CD should have the same SP level as the installed Windows. I.E. If you have XPSP3 installed, you should run SFC with an XPSP3 CD.
UBCD5 has hard drive diags, as well as memtest.
