No Internet connection w/cable?

I'm assuming this is a WIN98 problem

A friend is having problems getting online using @home the Cable guy ended up switching from a NIC to a USB modem and still no connection.Cable guy figures it might be a virus as headoffice can ping up until windows loads then nothing.
Here is what we tried:

1) disabled everything in MSconfig so there is nothing but explorer and systray at startup.
2) renamed autoexec.bat and config.sys
3)Cable guy switched modems
4)he did have Zonealarm installed but removed it and there are still several references in REGISTRY,he wasn't sure if this problem started at this same time ,so I'm giving him a copy zonealarm to reinstall .
5)No double listing of wnsock32.dll in windows system folder
6)full virus scan
7) he did install Mcaffee VScan recently,but I disabled it and it made no difference.
8)did scanreg/restore to a previously good time.
9)Did a IE repair.
10)Norton Windoctor registry integrity check.
11) he recently installed MYST(not sure what this may have done)
12)tried to make a connection using something other than IExplorer (norton live update )couldn't make connection
13)removed and installed DUN(getting desperate)
14)no error messages it just can't find server ,when trying to load a webpage.
15)LAN settings are "automatically detect settings" in both IE and control panel>Internet options.

Its a Compaq 600mhz Athlon running Win98SE with 256 RAM

Any help greatly appreciated.

1)Is he using the usb nic or an internal nic?
2)What lights are lit on the cable modem provided by @home?
3)If you go into Device Manager under Network Adaptors do you see any yellow exclamations or red x's? In fact do you see either of these anywhere at all in Device Manager?

First we need to make sure you have a link between your pc and the cable modem.

The cable guy configured the Network ,and right now he has the USB modem hooked up and I disabled the NIC in DEVICE MANAGER.
The top light is green and the bottom two activate (go on and off) when restarting the comp ,this is the same activity I see on mine so I'm assuming it is communicating?But IE won't load any URL I type and no other software is able to communicate .It sounds very much like a firewall thingy(from my limited experience) ,but until I can get him Zonealarm I want to know if it could be anything else.

No exclamation marks.

Can you tell what it says next to each light on your cable modem and if the light is lit solid, blinking or off after you completely bootup?

online = constant green
Message= Not lit
Recieve= intermintent while booting up
Send= intermintent while booting up

Tyr going to Start/Run and type in WINIPCFG and click on "Release ALL" then when you see zeros in the IP section .. click on "Renew ALL" ... then check and see if you can get on web site ..

What brand of cable modem is this?
Also open MS-Dos Prompt and type
ping 127.0.0.1
hit enter
and see if you get a reply or if you get a timeout message.
Did the installer mention if online means you have a cable link?
Do you see any lights on the usb nic that indicate you have a link with your pc? There should be some sort of light there.

Hi wonderinguy34,

I only bring this up because you mentioned it in your initial post. I don't really think this is the problem but here goes.

I recently installed MYST 3. This game is buggy as hell. There have already been 2 patches released with more to come. One known issue with it is some strange behavior on boot-up after playing the game. If you play the game, then shut down, on the next start-up you will get the screen showing the system is updating files, please wait... This will occur no matter how much time has elapsed. I bring this up because you say the problem is during start-up. Even the makers don't have a real answer for this behavior.

As I say, I don't think this is the problem, but if the two things...MYST 3 install and connectivety problems coincide, then I thought you should have this info. Good luck.

The cable guy did the ping ,before I got their,not sure of the results ,I'll try it.


I also have @home and just checked my Network settings in control panel I only have TCP/IP and the 3com nic listed ,My friend has quite a few listed ,from what I can remember.It may have been a mistake in assuming the cable guy set it up right?

Is there anyway to set it to prompt it to ask for a password to confirm its actually logging on to the network?

He may have netbui and ipx/spx in network control panel but should make no difference.
As long as tcp/ip is installed and bound to the appropriate NIC things should be ok.
I asked if he shows a link light on the usb NIC just to make sure the NIC sees the connection.

Its a USB modem not a USB NIC(just to clarify) I'll have to see about the light on the back ?I thought since the lights danced when the computer is booted there must be recognition,maybe I shouldn't assume?

I'm printing up the following to take this time,I didn't think it was going to be as elusive as it was and hadn't really read up on it.I've been able to get my comp triple booting NT4/Win95/Mandrake and getting my cable Internet working in each one ,so this is irritating.

I'm on @home, and run into this sort of trouble sometimes. Have had the cable guys out, and they've taught me how to troubleshoot some problems.

The green online light suggests the modem is comunicating with the internet, although it can be misleading. The send and recieve lights are self explanatory. If they both blink intermittently but not simultaniously during boot, that indicates the modem is doing its job.

This suggests the problem lies within the computer, probably the nic driver. This would be consistent with being able to ping till the win98 shell loads.

Before anything, try
start>run>ping 216.32.74.50 That's Yahoo.
If you get a reply, your machine is doing the internet. Ten try start>run>ping www.yahoo.com. If you get reply, you know the problem resides in your browser settings. If request times out, it could be the @home dns server. Ask cable guy for another dns server. If that's not the problem, look at hardware settings.

First I would remove the MYST game to simplify things. Then I would check for IRQ or other conflicts in control panel>system. Note that the nic may not report a conflict that is causing the problem. It may be caused by another device trying to use the same IRQ, but which does report a problem.

If no IRQ conflicts, and system reports device [nic} working properly, I would remove and reinstall the nic drivers. I've had those become corrupt.

If no joy, I would remove nic drivers, shut down and physicaly remove nic, then boot and reinstall nic and drivers according to manufacturer instructions.

It has been my experience that even the best techs do not have all the answers, and sometimes miss simple stuff.

Wish I'd have tried the ping method ,but he did say the tech was able to have mainoffice ping the comp up until Windows Boots ,then nothing,so he probably tried the pinging the NIC as well?I'll give it a go and see what happens.

Could TCP/IP settings cause this lack of communication.They are set in Control PAnel>Network ,but if they weren't removed and reinstalled they may still be fubar'd?The Tech never removed the old NIC settings/protocols before he installed the USB Modem.Or woulld there be error messages if something was ammiss?
