I once successfully disinfected this system with the great help available here and now I own it, and always wanted to.

Trouble is, the system is once again woefully slow and, while trying to run a full scan of MSE latest version today per Broni's specs, crawled through to only 1.5% complete in about 4 hours :/ My intention was to get a pass into his ICU after I perform his required 3 steps, but I also then realized that i really don't need any of the data currently on the system because none of it's mine.

I do have the original factory OS CD that contains the software and drivers, so I'm also more than willing to perform a complete reinstallation and start from scratch. I do know how to reset the boot sequence so I can boot from the CD, but i don't know if it's what I need to also perform the full OS reinstallation or if it's only for the software and drivers preloaded at the factory.

Can someone please help?

If it's an HP Recovery disc, then it would do an factory restore. There could be multiple CDs, depending on the model. Just boot from the CD and see what it says. If it looks like a regular XP OS installer, then go to the HP website to see if you can download drivers for your model.

Here's exactly what the CD says on it's cover:

Operating System CD
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Service Pack 2

Contains software and drivers already installed. For software reinstallation and repair only.

The dv1000s were CTO (Compaq To Order), so it's not a single model. Pretty sure this was also before they started putting recovery partitions on the system (the fact that you got a physical XP SP2 disc supports that theory). I would at least bookmark the HP driver site for the dv1000, just in case there is a driver or two missing.

Definitely download SP3 too. Install SP3 right after the recovery finishes.

Thank you again! One thing I don't understand: I ran a Belarc Advisor report on the sys and it shows XP Pro installed, SP 3; however, the OS product key sticker on the underside indicates Win Home w/SP 2. A little confused with that. So can I use the CD I now have to perform the reinstall?

Not sure where the confusion is. Your system came out before SP3, so it came with SP2. They're both still XP. You just need to install SP3 after the initial XP setup is done. That's why I said to download SP3.

When you reinstall, you'll be formatting the drive anyway, so it doesn't matter that your original CD is only SP2.

If any drivers are needed, install after you have installed SP3.

Learned that lesson the hard way.

Yup. SP3 should be the first thing you install after the XP setup.

I'd like to find myself a set of recovery disks so I can erase everything and truly start over. The HP CD I have is for the drivers only. Is such a set of disks available anywhere for an older system? Can they be made by yours truly with some program?

You just need to use the "Operating System CD" to load XP like normal. Didn't it boot to the XP Setup?

Then you would install the drivers/apps from any additional discs. If you don't have any other discs, then download the drivers from the HP website. Again, your system was a CTO, so there isn't a standard set of recovery discs like on other models.

You should be able to load XP off that Operation System CD. If not, you can try requesting discs from HP, but it's a pretty old model. Otherwise, you can try a site like http://www.restoredisks.com/

I'll boot from the CD and see what happens so I can let you know. Do I tap the esc key to access the BIOS options?

That's what I said in my first post. I'm sure it's like a regular XP OS disc.

I think the old HPs used F2 to get into the bios. It's been a while. It should show it on the bios splash screen.

esc gave a prompt to press any key to continue to boot from CD...

So that's what I'm seeing. Looks like pressing ENTER is the way to go. Agree? I presume, then, that the drivers will all be installed as well since they also show on the CD?

There is usually a separate CD just for apps/drivers. You might not need to install some of the drivers, but don't assume they will all be there. Again, you have a CTO, so the apps/drivers are usually on another disc. Install SP3 first, then see which drivers are missing.
