[RESOLVED] Cannot Download Internet Explorer 8

CPU duel 2400 MHz (4x600)
XP Pro
service pack 3, v.6223

Internet Explorer 7 is on the computer. When I try to download Internet Explorer 8 I get this message that says "Your computer requires an update" and takes me to a download screen where there is a file "windows XP-KB932823-v3-x86-ENU.exe". I run that then I get a message that says "Setup has detected that service pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying. No need to install update." So I can't install I/E 8 as the same thing happens. Any ideas?

That looks like you're trying to download Service Pack 3. Where did you get your download for IE8?

Just chose your language and chose your OS, specifically Windows XP 32 bit.

pipercub--As photolady has posted you are using an update for Windows XP, not for IE8. She has given you the download site.

Thanks for the replies. I know I had posted before and I searched for that post but couldn't find it. And I knew that I wasn't able after all the posts to resolve the problem. So I must be misunderstanding what the solution is. I was at the link that photo lady gave me and that is where I tried to download I/E 8 and had the problem. In the link I selected "Downloads", then "Windows XP", then "download". The file shows up and I run it and the same thing happens. Sorry if I am missing something.

I think you're misunderstanding what you're supposed to do. When you click on the link I gave you, the only thing you change is which Windows XP you're using. I assume you're using Windows XP 32 bit version, most people do. So, see the image below:

See where I've drawn a red block around the version of Windows? You need to select that in the drop down menu using the small black down arrow. Then click on the blue block that says Download, and Save the file to a location of your choice. somewhere you can find it easily. I'd save it to the desktop. The file name will be "IE8-windows XP-x86-ENU.exe"

You need to select the OS first before clicking on the download button.

That is exactly what I did. Thanks for the visual by the way. And the same thing happened. It said I needed to download a file so I did. I ran the file and it said it would not run to manually download and run the file. So I did that. Then it said I did not need the file since I had a newer service pack and so it won't install I/E 8. I would use Windows 7 but the two music programs I want to use are only supported to XP.

Personally I'd stay with IE 7. I've seen problems on XP with IE8.

pipercub--"windows XP-kb932823-v3-x86-ENU.exe" is a file for a specific purpose. You apparently have activated Input Method Editor (IME) on your PC. Are you aware of that? (It involves using your keyboard to type foreign characters, such as Chinese.)
If you do not use IME, disable it. http://www.osronline.com/ddkx/appendix/ime_728v.htm (last paragraph from the bottom).
Now you should be able to download and install IE. I believe you already know that site.

To access IME I am assuming you want me to do this:

To invoke IME, you must use the key combination ALT+~ or ALT+` to launch 4 applications (located in the lower right hand corner on your desktop). These applications provide several Japanese characters you can enter into your document. To disable IME, you must use the same key combination of ALT+ ~ or ALT+ ` again.

I tried holding down the "Alt" key, the "=+" key and the "`~" key without using the shift key. Then I tried holding down the "Alt" key and the "=+" and the "`~" using the "shift" key. Then I tried holding down the "alt", "=+", "`~" not using the "shift" key and the same combination using the "Shift" key. I was never able to get anything appearing on the screen. I must not understand what to do.

Don't press the equals or plus keys. You need to press the alt key, then press the ~ key or press the Alt key and ` key at the same time. But take the equal sign(=) and the Plus sign (+) out of the key presses.

The instructions were saying to use the Alt key and another key. The plus sign means press another key, not press the plus sign key.

I can't tell you if I have IME activated or not. I don't know how to look for that. I tried all combinations of pressing the keys the "Alt" and "~" and "Alt" and "`" and nothing came up.

You could try downloading the IE8 installer on another computer and then use a USB flash drive or a CD to transfer it to your problem computer so you can run it there.
