[RESOLVED] Cannot view CBS.log file

I cannot open/view my CBS.log file by just clicking on it. "Access Denied". I have determined that all users have "Full Control" over this file.
I have not run SFC since I did a Repair Install a couple of weeks ago for another matter. The .log is only 2.1MB in size, but it is growing.
I turned off the Windows Installer Module service, but that did not help.

I used the command "notepad c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log" and was able to open the .log file. This was suggested in http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...7-e3b7b4a359b4

How can I open the CBS.log file directly by just clicking on it? I can open the other four .log files in the CBS folder. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS

Or is this just normal behavior for CBS.log?

Did you try from an elevated cmd prompt?

Click the Start orb, type "cmd" (not the quotes) in the Search box, right-click "cmd" in the programs list that appears and select "Run as administrator"

At the cmd prompt type "notepad c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log" (not the quotes) and then press [Enter].

Yes. As mentioned--though I left out the fact that it was an elevated command-- "I used the command "notepad c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log" and was able to open the .log file. This was suggested in http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...7-e3b7b4a359b4

So opening from an elevated command prompt is not the issue.
What I would like to do is just click on CBS.log.

Did you try with an elevated "explorer.exe"?

Click the Start orb, type "explorer" (not the quotes) in the Search box, right-click "Windows Explorer" in the programs list that appears and select "Run as administrator".

Is what I am experiencing normal behavior for CBS.log? (By normal I mean it cannot be opened by just clicking on it.)

Copy the file to some other location like Desktop and you'll be able to open it from there.

It's protected file.

I had already given all users "Full Control" to the CBS.log file.

CBS file is protected only in its original location.
I'm not sure what do you mean by "Full Control".

Broni--When you right click a file|Properties|Security tab you will see all the permissions possible. Full Control is the permission at the top and if checked will check all the other permissions--like Read (except Special Permissions).

Then "Full control" is different than ownership.
Take ownership of "etc" folder and you'll be able to open CBS log no problem.

Broni--Which etc folder? I have at least five. The one that seems closest to having involvement with the CBS.log file is in C:\Windows\System32\drivers .

But I have a suspicion that part of the problem is that the CBS.log file is in use.

My mistake, sorry about it.

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder.

Broni--Regrets. No success. But I am happy with the solution to make a copy of CBS.log and then read from there.
