UDMA disabled in BIOS
Whilst in my BIOS trying to sort out another problem i noticed the following...
my CD-RW has UDMA disabled and greyed out in BIOS could this be normal?
Or could this be the reason why I get buffer underruns everytime when writing CD to CD directly on-the-fly?
Do you think UDMA should be Enabled on a less than a year old CD-RW?
I have tried looking for info on thier site but cant find anything specific th UDMA.
My DVD has UDMA Enabled, thats why i found this kinda wierd.
Thanx in advance for any help on this matter. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I don't know specifically whether that drive supports (U)DMA. Believe it or not many don't. This could be a chipset driver or bios issue though. It might be worth applying any ones available (some were mentioned in your previous post). It might also be worthwhile seeing if a new (relative to what you have now) firmware update exists for that cdrw.
In terms of the bios setting, you're saying that you can't even change the setting (enable/disable) there? It won't let you?
There are a lot a factors that can cause buffer underruns. Your lack of DMA is not necessarily responsible. Especially if it is happening on CD-to-CD copies. You've got your DVD (source drive) and CDRW (target drive) on the same IDE channel. Depending on other factors, that can certainly cause underruns. Afterall, only one device on the channel can be active at a time. If you have your writing software first create a disk image on your hard drive and then write it the underruns will likely disappear.

Regarding firmware (if it's 1.05) there is a flash to 1.06. Anyway find out what version you have.
The ROM version is stamped on the top of the drive below the serial #.

My other PC is a celeron 300mhz and that can write CD to CD directly with no problems, just as long as its a new CD i am copying.
And yes I am saying that in BIOS I can't even change the setting, It won't let me. its greyed out.
as far as the firmware update goes there r new versions on LG's website but it says dont use these if the writer came with a new HP PC or simular as the writer is different, it tells me to look on HP's website and i cant find any there....
I would normally copy to the HDD 1st but just for now and then when i'm in a hurry i would like to use the direct option as well, since it should be capable if my celeron can...
interestingly i have read somewhere that you can use the 8x firmware on the LG version of my drive to double the write speed...sounds good init, but i ain't gunna risk that on mine as its not quite the same according to the LG website. just thought i'd share that with you tho.
thanx

in the device manager it says the firmware version is 1.09 which is far newer/different to the normal LG Drive. why can't HP just fit a normal drive, things would be a lot simpler.
DMA is enabled on all drives in the device manager tho

Hi,
how are they connected?
A master should be at end, A slave on middle
(gives better signal)
this thing may even have cable select cables in there
80 wire ribbon are CS
and 40 wire ribbon can be CS
to answer the LG question.
I bet they cut corners to cut costs

Remember, it's FREE advice. It may be worth all of two cents.
Jaak

both cd-rw and DVD are set to Cable Select. the CDRW is Master (on end of cable) and DVD is Slave (on middle plug)
but no i dont think my pc has a via chipset as on this page http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/get_doc.pl?SNI=hppavilion2 1849&LC=personal_computing&Tfile=bph05881#P5_125 it says its an AMD 751 (Irongate) chipset
i guess from what Mosaic1 is saying that this drive don't have UDMA feature then, so i'd say all my settings are OK then.
But i don't know y i cant write CD to CD direct....Mosaic1 have you tried this with software other than EasyCD? ie. i prefer to use win-on-cd or nero because they have more features.
win-on-cd and nero both work fine for any other writing modes, easyCD works fine for direct copy, but the full version of easyCD that came with PC is stuck on the HP Recovery CD because i don't use it, that why i don't just use easyCD for direct copy
I really dont wanna install easyCD anyway just for direct cd copying if i have other software that should do it too

i didn't get a Applications only cd with my PC??? i think i've been conned, better check up on that 1 in the morning.....but i think that disk will only work if i and using thier install of windows anyway from their recovery cd (i may be wrong)...
...anyway its getting l8 now, so i better get off to bed, cya all 2morrow.
thanx for the links and info i'll have a read tomorrow

I didn't realize that it was an OEM'd drive. I'm not familiar with this Pavilion but I am curious as to what the bios options are foo the drive position (BTW what is it - Secondary master?). Are the options AUTO, HD type, and NONE - or is there also a CD choice?
It would help I suppose to identify whose motherboard HP is using here. What's the ID string?
-
Mosaic1 - I didn't see the bios ID string posted there. Did I miss it?
-
I just love this guessing blind stuff! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Mosaic1 - I downloaded the HP bios you linked in the other post and had a quick look around inside it.
The flash appears to be a phoenix bios for the ASUS K7M.
ASUS appears to use AMI bios's for that board I think, and it's interesting that their version 1008 bios indicates that one of the fixes was:
4. Solve some high speed CD-RWs show "ATAPI-compliant" error message.
You could do some visual comparisons for the board on the asus site if you wanted.
The other thing is that the ASUS ide drivers for the board seem to have a DMA config tool in them.

Good Morning all, i'm now awake.
sorry m8, i have no idea where to find the bios ID string on the HP PC other than i think it should be in the BIOS sumwhere, but its not...
both cd-rw and DVD are set to Cable Select. the CDRW is Master (on end of cable) and DVD is Slave (on middle plug), this is how they were when i got PC, i havent changed them.
the only options that i can change in BIOS relating to CD-RW are as below, the setting mine is on is in brackets:
32 bit I/O: [enabled] or disabled
Hide Mode: enabled or [disable]
these were the only adjustable settings, the following are all greyed out, these are:
multi sector transfers: [16 sectors]
LBA Mode control: [Enabled]
Transfer Mode [FPIO 4/DMA 2]
Ultra DMA Mode [Disabled]
Smart Monitoring [Disabled]
I cant even change the bit at the top where it says Type: [AUTO]
Hope this can help you to help me.

Just to be clear, the fact that the cdrw uses the ATAPI interface (as all such devices do) does not mean it can't do UDMA transfers. The ATAPI standard supports UDMA.
As for the UDMA bios setting, it looks like that is some funky thing related to the HP bios. If it can't be changed, then ....
As for the CD-to-CD copies... Just because your other machine can do it doesn't mean much. It's not the processor that's the key factor in such copies. It's a lot of things. It is a combination of the hardware, software, configuration and settings that determines the success or failure of copying (or writing in general, or the speed it can be done at, or...). When it comes to buffer underruns you have to remember that the cd write process (absent burnproof technology), cannot be interrupted once it starts. The flow/availability of data to the writer must be continuous. If at any point the writer goes to write and has no data to do so: that's the ballgame. CD writing isn't like other i/o operations, where a momentary delay is tolerable, will go unnoticed. As I said, quite a few things play a role.
It may seem irrational, but a lot of writing packages recommend turning DMA off. And if it is on they will have failures/problems. Have you tried turning DMA for the drive off in device manager?
As I said ininitally, the fact the the source and destination drives are on the same IDE channel can often be a major problem. The system can't be reading data from the source and sending data to the destination simultaneously, and if the writer's buffer runs dry... Using an intermediate image on the hard drive removes this potential contention.

i now sort of understand about this UDMA business... my settings must be normal according to what i've read so far...
I have also been on the phone to HP and they have confirmed the settings to be normal.
HP also told me they don't know what MOBO is in my PC b'cuz it could be 1 of a few they have fitted to this line of PC's (i think that is a cop out, they make me laugh, HP sopport is a Joke!)
When i asked him if the BIOS update on this http://www.hp.com/cposupport/swindex...1849_swen.html page is for my PC he said "i think so" (My thought was how can he "think so" if he don't even know what MOBO it has). but anyway i am gunna leave that BIOS update alone untill i know for sure, as my PC is working OK at the moment.
the reason i compared the HP to my other PC is b'cus writer and rom are on same EIDE cable in that 1 too and it works fine!
I think this most be some incompatability between my writer and Nero/WinOnCD, i have just found out that there is a new version of Nero available (v5.5.1.8) for download so i'm now gunna try that, ill let u know if that works.
But anyway if it don't I'll just have to put up with copying via hard drive (i know this is more reliable anyway from past experiance)
Thanx all for the info, you have all given me more help than expected, i'll let u have a break for a bit. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ as i don't want to out stay my welcome https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

you will probably find this a normal thing but, the new version of Nero worked fine for direct cd copying...Great...At Last....(sorry people, i should have looked for this b4 coming in here asking) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ but then there was a few other questions that ya'll helped me with.
My guess is that the old version didn't work b'cuz my PC is so New (well newish, i've had it 6months now)
I have only tried it once, but b4 it wouldn't even last 1min b4 it got underruns.
quite wierd really.
Thanks all, my PC is now running in almost perfect order thanks to the help from u guys. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
