Spybot doesn't really stack up any more... it's past its prime. AVG is also no longer a reliable a/v. Avast and Antivir are the two choices for a/v that many of us here recommend... Microsofts security essentials has a lot of support too.
I agree with fink. AVG is a bloated beast. I cannot recommend it at all. Avast has been my fav freebie for a while now but just released Avast 5 is creating lots and lots of problems. I cannot run it on one of my PCs and the old version ran perfectly. So for now, I can only recommend free AntiVir.
I also agree that Spybot is nearly worthless. It can no longer cleanup any serious infections. For on demand scans, use MalwareBytes Antimalware and Superantispyware.
Threatfire is good. So is Comodo. Just remember when installing Comodo to NOT install the antivirus.
Finally, if you are used to the freebies and like them, then they will serve you well. If you want set and forget, the Norton package (if it's Norton Internet Security) is a better choice. It comes preconfigured and ready to go...
I installed Windows 7 Home Premium a couple of months ago and have been using Microsoft Security Essentials and have to say Microsoft got it right this time. I've had absolutely no problems with it. It's also free. I'm also using the firewall that came installed with Win 7, and again, no probs.

so I should get rid of spybot?
and use
Avast
comodo
threatfire
anything else?
Had to remove Avast from a clients computer yesterday.
Avira Free

What are on it now which matches my laptops and a they have been clean for a couple years. How long I have had them.
Train,
If you don't mind sharing the info what problems did Avast cause? Was it the new Avast 5.0 you had to remove? The Broadbandreports Forum and Avast Forum indicate a significant number of folks are having problems with the new build...
I have yet to try it (guess I need to bite the bullet and try it but was gonna wait a few weeks for another build) and have not yet recommended the upgrade to the folks who installed Avast 4.8 on my recommendation.
I know Broni is trying it and I've seen no complaints by him which is good... :) But Han sure isn't happy with it...:(
Avast put out a bad update with a bunch of false positives.
If a person believed what avaast said. you could end up having to do a Clean Install.
Sure glad she did nothing and called!
The really bad Avast definition issue was a few weeks ago. To my knowledge, there hasn't been any serious FPs since then... Unfortunately, with no matter which AV we run, there are FPs that we have to deal with. Just the nature of the beast I guess... :(
I had Avira Free for a few months, and it pops up nag screens for the paid version with every update. I chose to deal with Avast's FP's. I read enough newsletters to catch them as they're happening.
Hi you can try to use ProteMac NetMine. It’s firewall for Mac.It’s tool protects against viruses and controls all your network .In my opinion it’s really good tool.
so can I use in conjunction?
Avira
comodo pro
threatfire
Yes, so long as you don't install the antivirus included in Comodo Pro.
You may also want to consider the free version of Comodo firewall (also without installing the a/v of course)
should I get rid of the norton av before it expires or wait for it to expire then download the new av and firewall
my computer seem to be running a bit slower after i have downloaded a few new programs
CPU seem to be all over the place going upto 90+% sometimes
is this from norton?
Well, I'd also chip in - Agnitum Outpost Firewall (been using it since years) and recomment avira.
