Strange pop ups and browser problems

Hi - I've been having problems with my system. I get a variety of problems that include:

error message pop ups
difficulty opening my browser homepage (google) ... works eventually
files (eg word) difficult and sometimes impossible to open - and crashing as well... making my desktop disappear and reappear.
system slow to respond
booting taking overly long

I have been on the HijackThis forum and had considerable help to find some viruses and remove them... http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...2&goto=newpost , so you can see how things have been going

However, the problems still persists - and I was advised on the other forum to post here as it may be a Windows problem

First of all, get your WinXP CD handy, then go to Start>Run and type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes (you don't get any report from the System File Checker, it just silently replaces and corrupt or missing system files that it finds).

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. There was no CD with my system. But I ran the utility and rebooted. Still getting problems - eg the error message I posted on the other forum: I Explore Application error. This seems to happen when i close a browser window sometimes.

I wondered if you had any more ideas about this. I'm still getting the popup error and my browser window won't always open eg for google - after trying 6 or 7 times it is opening usually but something is stopping it initially

State "utility" in question.

What does eventviewer show?
Go to Start > Run and type in: eventvwr
Look for errors in application and system, if you find a lot of the same errors concerning Word or IExplorer copy and paste them here.
Especially the error popup. It wil be called application popup in eventviewer.

(You can copy them by clicking the 'two pages' button)

In Application , I can't tell whether it is for Word or IE but I am getting 'Application hang' and 'Application Error' a lot of times. Double clicking opens the window but I can't copy the contents (I can write it out for you?) Nothing happens when I click on the 2 pages icon.

In System , i get a number of errors for 'Service control manager' Same thing though - I can't copy message by clicking

The source will be IExplorer or MS Office.
If you click the 'two pages' icon, the error will be copied to clipboard, there will be no notification if it's copied.
Just use ctrl V in your reply or rightclick > paste.

Only the same error occuring a lot and the error under source application popup.
Errors are marked with a red icon with a white cross.

I see now how to pull it out...

There are other errors but here to begin are the ones that look to repeat...

hpslpsvc32.dll is probably causing the problem.
This service is used to keep track of HP printers in a network. But it may cause problems.
It may use up your resources/bandwith, making it difficult for IExplorer to open web pages.
Also if this service isn't working right Word will give an error as well, since Word is trying to connect to a printer, if it cannot be found it will be extremely slow to open documents or errors out if it hasn't enough resources.

To see if I'm right, you can temporarily stop the service 'HP Network Device Support'
Go to Start > Run > type in: services.msc
Find 'HP Network Device Support' service.
Doubleclick 'HP Network Device Support' service and then set Startup type to Manual rather then Automatic and then stop the service.
And for good measures add hpslpsvc32.dll to the exception list in your firewall.

If this doesn't solve the problem, temporarily stop all services related to HP.
HP is known to install tons of unneeded software.
If a service is needed, you can always enable it.

I stopped all services to see.. Browser looks to be working better generally but then there are intermittant problems and it won't open. Clicking open a new browser a few times opens it. What I noticed (from AVG running) is that the poor response seems to coincide with a removal of a cookie. I emptied the cookies folder. But as soon as a browser is opened the cookie looks to have returned

What cookie is it?
Does it come from a known site?

Since you have IExplorer 6 you might try IEFix
IEFix is a small utility which will repair IExplorer.
Use it ONLY for IExplorer 6!

Maybe now is a good time to move up to IExplorer 7?

How is Word doing?

I've got AVG running and under Resident Shield - when Scan for Tracking Cookies is checked - the main cookie that keeps showing as being found is @atdmt[2].txt There are others too. It happened so often that I had to turn the function off. I found the cookie in the cookies folder and deleted but it returns as soon as Google is accessed as do a whole range of others.

I downloaded IEFix. It asks me for the path to SP2. I can't find it, although it is here - I know this because I've run HijackThis logs previously. Would you know how I locate it?

I have access here to other browsers including IE7. However some of the problems still persist even with these eg the error popup.

Word looks ok at the moment - documents open and close as they should without crashing
