My computer won't boot because it gave me a stop error. I need to get in the console and change a registry value. Anyways, I'm using the win xp hm sp3 CD that came from the manufacture. When I boot from the disc it goes to the manufacture default asking if I want to wipe the hd clean. My question is how do I avoid this and get to the recover console, or is there even one on the CD?? Please Help!! Need my computer back.:confused:
It looks like you're using Recovery CD, not Windows CD.
What kind of error are you getting?
Is computer un-bootable?
Thanks for the reply. Yep it is a recovery dvd but doesnt it still contain win xp? Maybe just no recovery console. I am getting a blue screen right after the windows logo says something like "Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE"
Ive read some forums and think I know how to fix this as long as I can reach the recovery console. Sounds like I may need a real win xp cd, or can the console alone be downloaded and booted from cd hopefully (in a perfect world)
Your system files/registry is messed up.
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

More problems! When I try and boot from the RC CD it starts to load and blue screen again. Says run chkdsk virus sector blah blah blah. Is the HD shot? The comp is only six months old.
What is the error message this time?

Did all this start to happen all of sudden, or you had some problems prior to this situation?
No not really. The other day the internet browser was acting sluggish so I restarted and it wouldn't boot. Now Im here.
Something got scrambled.
Try running chkdsk /r
It may straighten things out.
I dont think I have any way to run a chkdsk. I cant get to a command prompt. Id try and pull the hd and run as slave in another machine but its a notebook.

It's more thorough, then chkdsk, and it'll create bootable CD.
Broni, Without taking the cover off the notebook i dont know the brand of the HD. Does it matter which utility I use as long as it has an iso file??
