Weird Clicks & Lost Restore Points

The other night, I returned to my desktop to hearing routine clicks that were not audible in the past. When I turned on my IE7 borwser, I notived it was acting really slow and weird--apps opening slower, mouse not moving, and trouble restarting. I ran Avira and SpyWare Terminator and found nothing. I cleaned teh system with Glary Utilitiues and CC Cleaner. I tired to restart the system, but it would freeze up at the opening screen. The IE7 colors changed from silver to default blue. I figured I woudl restore teh computer back using system restore. I suddenly noticved all my past restore poijts were gone! Only the day's restore point was available and it was of no help to me.

Any ideas???

Coming from where?

Coming from the modem (tower). I never heard clicks before. Suddenly they started...suddenly PC been acting unstable.

"clicks" can indicate hard drive trouble. Might want to go to the drive manufacturers site and download and run the diagnostics.

Have I lost my past restore points forever?

Should I start backing my stuff up now before I encounter real danger?

As you did a system restore I believe you lost your old restore points--maybe someone smarter than I can confirm this. You should have anything really important to you already backed up, if not yes indeed--if you can access it and back it up do it. Then do the diagnostics on that drive.

I don't think, it's true.

I put my ear to the tower and heard the click (which are pretty audible). they are subtle, but audible and click every few seconds. I am most frustrated about the restore points.

Anyone have ideas??? Any one need more info to help me out?

Did you back up all your important stuff?

Did you run the hard drive diagnostics?

It's most likely hard drive clicking. It can die any minute.

I ran a hard drive diagnostics software that came pre-installed with HP. It said the hard drives were fine, but when I tried a longer test...teh computer froze up. Can I purchase a hard-drive to replace the other one? Will I lose all the installed software apps?

Yes, buying a replacement drive is easy enough. Whether you lose your apps and data depends on whether the old drive can still be accessed or not - if it can then it's possible to clone it to the new drive.

Well I ran a diagnostics and my hard drive failed a "surface test". My PC is unabel to store create automatic back-ups for some reason. All my system restores are lost since 7/28. This all started once I downloaded teh latest windows update which included a PCI Fax Modem (which was deemed "important"). I tried to uninstall this update and it cannot be removed. Any ideas?

I'd bet, that Windows update is just a coincidence.
IMHO, your hard drive is ready to die.
Use external enclosure, or hook it up as a slave in another computer to get your data.
The longer you wait, the less chance you have.
