Not sure if this is a Vista problem or simply a IE7 problem:
Every time I surf the net and close out the IE window (click on red "X" button), it takes about a good 20-30 seconds for the window to close. Sometimes, it just stays on or freezes up. Is there something that I can do to help remedy this? Is it a speed thing? Connection thing? Cache thing? Thanks.
I can't give you an answer, but I can add more info -
I updated my old machine to IE7 and although I could swear it didn't do it at first, it did by the end - as if there had been an update which changed things, and that was on XP.
Now I'm on my new Vista machine it's the same (but that would fit with an updated IE7) I click the red cross, the page blanks instantly, but then takes a while to actually close. I don't think it's ever failed to shut eventually though - not so far anyway.
So I guess it's not Visa?
Jhhn12774 and stewart borland--I think the two most likely causes are
1) Spyware

EDIT--before reading the parts of this post that have to do with #2, please refer to Posts #4 and 5 below.
2) Having too many processes start at boot and therefore still running when you try to shut down. Windows has to shut them all down before it shuts itself off.

#2 is a little more involved to fix and has been covered in several earlier posts. Start by clicking Start|Run|type msconfig|OK. The processes that are starting at boot have the box to the left checked. They are all third party processes, and very few are really needed to start at boot. Perhaps antivirus, anti spyware, firewall, programs having to do with a network, etc. The others can be unchecked. Also look in Task Manager (Control+Alt+Delete in XP) to see what is running just before you shut down.

The processes shown in Task Manager could come from some program that you no longer even care about and you can uninstall it.
Welshjim - it's just shutting down IE7 not windows?
stewart borland--You caught me relying on the Google search too much. I searched for "ie7 slow shutdown" and got the list of references shown. However, now upon examining the list more carefully, I see that most are for "Windows slow shutdown". Google messed (me) up and I passed it along.
Sorry, but the Spyware possibility could still apply.
This could be caused by a buggy add-on. Go to All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Internet Explorer (no add-ons) and try that. If things work OK when using that, go to Tools>Manage add-ons>Enable or Disable add-ons, and disable them all. You should then find that IE7 closes normally. Then it's just a matter or re-enabling the add-ons one by one until you find the culprit.

dunedin--Had you in fact used Skype since your last boot? Or is the problem caused just by having the add-on "Enabled" ?

I have used Skype since I disabled the add-ons (2 of them) and I have rebooted. Had to think about that, but I used Skype today and it was yesterday I disabled the add-ons.
When I disabled the add-ons IE immediately shut down quickly.

FWIW--I must have over 80 Add-Ons "Enabled" when I run IE7. At least three come from Skype. But I am not experiencing any problems using or shutting down IE7 (knock on wood). So the problem probably comes from a corrupted Add-On ("buggy" as SuperSparks says) if Add-Ons are the problem. And the suggestion given by SuperSparks is the way to find it.
Of course if starting IE with "no Add-Ons" shows no improvement in shutting down IE, then Add-Ons are not the problem.
Big thanks to SuperSparks - spot on, it was an add-on. Not sure yet which one as I only enabled the ones I'd heard of or sounded like I might need :rolleyes: and it's closing down fine.
I'll wait and see if any of the others are asked for, and if not, they're just as well off.
