Pent III 600
64MB ram
Win 98SE
Trying to fix an old PC - Soon after pc starts - displays desktop and icons it reboots. Does not do this in 'safe' mode. Have reformatted hdd (20gig) and disconnected all drives cards etc everything except monitor, mouse and keyboard. Suspect motherboard problem - any sugestions?

I suggest cleaning the computer first.
Acts like the hsf is full of dust and junk to me.
Normal happening to all of us.
Never done a cleanup like that let me know and instructions can be posted.
Rebooting like that can be caused by a failing power supply. If you have, or can borrow, a multimeter, here's how to test a power supply:

Or alternatively you can buy a proper PSU tester, they don't cost much:

Have blown out brushed and hovered inside but will check psu - take it there is extra load in normal mode and not safe mode.

Yes there is, and it can cause cpu overheating, which will casue the computer to shutdown.Quote:
Have tested voltage thru molex connector and getting 5 and 12 OK. HSF clean and am running with case open what temp should processor be at as am able to monitor that also when pc starts up.

CPU temp is 37C/98F CPU fan speed 4821-4963 RPM

You posted the right information.
I have a feeling that old ps is about to bite the dust.
Do you a possible replacement that is the same size in wattage or even bigger?
Also can you post the make and model of that computer?

Nope tried that same problem
Having eliminated most other causes - could it be a failing motherboard or CPU?
Take tha cover off and set a house fan to blowing into the case.
Test the computer again.
