Hi every time I shut down my PC it takes almost 5 minuets from the moment I click “shut down” until it complete the process of shutting down. It is a bit annoying, how can I correct this and what might be the reason for such delay? I am using XP Pro with service pack 2

Does it matter ?
Just click shudown and walk away and get on with something else.
In the mean time the PC will shut down and you will have spent 5 minutes doing something else with your time rather that watching your PC shut down.

yes it matters, 5 minuets is a long time for the shutdown process which means (at least for me) that something is not right and I dont like things which I feel are not correct.

Check for viruses and spyware
I ran CCleaner every alternate day and no spyware (I am using Microsoft AntiSpyware) also (Spybot - Search & Destroy) and no virus (Mcafee) all antivirus and Antispyware are up to date.

Have you installed any software recently?One that came along with the problem?Maybe something is taking too long to shut down...
I believe that, after u press shut down the desktop dissapears immediately, but the systems halts in the next screen which says something like "saving your settings" right?
It could be a system service that takes too long as well

gioannou is right. One of the reasons can be something not shutting down when it is supposed to. If shutdown hangs at “Saving Your Settings” this MS fix unloads your Profile to allow shutdown

Nix.. I can imagine that if you're installing new software that requires a reboot waiting that long would be extremely frustrating. :)
If you were restarting yes it would be annoying but for shuting down as stated...Quote:

In order to restart a computer you have to shut it down first. It doesn't matter if it restarts after it's been ordered to shut down the process to close the PC is the same.

fink--your comment is absolutely correct--but--if you read his original post his problem is a long shutdown time. Maybe I'm missing something here (and that wouldn't be unusual).
