Horizontal page size screwiness?

Mods:

Running XP Pro and IE 6. Just recently I've noticed that when I'm browsing a forum that doesn't have ad space on the right (like the Specialist's Forum or Private Messages, etc.), my browser acts as though "word wrap" is turned off, and I must scroll horizontally quite some distance to see the entire window contents. Interestingly, if I go ahead and click the "expand to full width" length, it REDUCES this horizontal scrolling requirement, but doesn't eliminate it entirely.

On normal pages, with ad space on the right side, this problem doesn't happen. What am I overlooking, or is this normal? :confused:

I've never experienced that with any browser, and every page has ads on the right, including PMs. Something else is going on here.

Hmmm... I'll try to isolate an example and give you the thread link. I'm not really sure what's going on myself... :confused:

Well... it APPEARS that the "ad space" has something to do with it, but I'm not sure what I'm seeing actually.

I've attached 4 screenshots:

1) Screen is ok
2) Screen is NOT ok - left side of browser window
3) Screen is NOT ok - right side of same window
4) Screen is NOT ok - after clicking the "expand" link - still not really ok

Any thoughts?

I'm going to try this with Mozilla for the next couple of hours to see if it makes any difference, had been using IE 6 for unrelated reasons lately, but I'll try to give some more info if these screenshots don't provide enough data.

I'm open to suggestions either way. ;)

On initial testing, Mozilla 1.0.1 does NOT appear to have this same symptom. I'll continue testing for awhile...

From where I sit, there's no need to scroll to the right using IE, but when using Netscape 7.1, the posts fill up the entire screen...have to scroll over to see the ads, but the ads do appear.

Ah, it appears you use rather a small screen resolution, 800x600 or lower?

If you're still talking to me, my screen resolution is 1024 x 768 on this system in question, 32-bit color...

Mozilla 1.5 ALSO does NOT exhibit these symptoms. I am only seeing this in IE 6 (SP-2) if that matters. It almost looks as though - when this happens - that the ad space doesn't fully load for some reason. When it happens, it always looks like the screen shots previously sent.

I want to see if I can recreate it, but I cannot get access to the one the attachment.

The specialists lounge is a 2nd lounge we added for members with 2000+ posts.

anyways, why did you make it private? I mean, if the information in there is valid then why not just make it read-only for everyone else? or make it read-only after you reach like 500 or 1000 or something

Byan, you can see the forum leaders here http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showgroups.php? and the group at the bottom of the list are the people with 2000 or more posts.

Mods and Admin autmatically get access although most of them already fit the 2000+ posts category anyway.

It's not a techie forum, just for shootin' the breeze. Anyway it's just experimental. If it doesn't seem to work we'll remove it again.

Ok... here you go geniuses! The following link will serve as an example...

This MAY have something to do with my "personal" settings... I never noticed this symptom until after I'd passed the 2000 posts mark, and some of my settings got updated.

I mention this because I let another user that has a VirtualDr account use this SAME PC, and logon with THEIR user name, and try the following link (still using my copy if IE 6 of course), and it doesn't do the same thing!

Afterwards, that user logged out of VirtualDr, and I logged back in, without starting a new session with IE, went back to this same link... problem is back again.
