Is Windows 95 "Dead"

If you judge that on this forum YES IT IS

However, although I haven't used in years, there are many folks out there that still do, and will not upgrade for whatever reason.

So, as long as Jupiter Media keeps this particular board open, lets make use of it.

I am proposing starting a thread of Windows 95 Tips and Tweaks I know there are a thousand out there, and readily available for anyone doing a search, Just look in "Murfs Garage"

Before we start would like input on what type, maybe common problems, ................. I don't know you folks decide then we will start the thread.

Lets see some ideas.......

I'm glad to see this question. I'm one that prefers 95 over any other micro & soft virus, I mean O.S.

I would like to see the info posted in the FAQs on "How To Install USB" in Win 95 B and C. It works with USB when the hard install is done properly.

I just screwed mine up, while trying to remember the proper procedure.

I will post the fix question I have, in a new thread.

I was hoping to get my Creative MP3 player which can double as a removable drive to work at work where some of us are still using NT, looks like it's not going to be an easy task if possible at all.

I think I seen somewhere here, that USB is NOT supported under NT.

I seen one good article on http://www.microsuck.com about NT. It is about the Navy installing it to control a ship, and it left the ship dead in the water, and had to be towed back to port

I believe there are some USB drivers available for the older NT4 but unless they are specifically written by the hardware vendor your so out of luck.

NT4 does not support USB. You must turn to third-party USB stacks. The only commercially available one I know about is from BSquare. Their "WinDK extension for USB" is an addon to WinDK.

Do you think Jupiter will kill a forum just because it's used infrequently? Why would they? It's not like printing a newspaper that is not being read by a lot a people -- if nobody posts for 3 days, no paper is wasted, and no bandwidth is wasted.

I come here every day because it's one of the few places that hasn't lumped Win95 in with 98/SE/ME. I won't wade through all the posts that don't apply to Win95 just to find the ones that do.

Well Put Jerry4Dos, I completly agree with that statement and logic.

I have went to some other help boards and there is no moderators there evidentally, and they are rediculous. They are filled with people that smart off to questions. Not like here at VDr, where you get respect and people try to help. This place is about the best one could hope for.

I have talked to admin over the past year. They have no intention of removing Windows 95 forum at this time. It has been suggested that it be combined with "98", like so many of the other forums. They are reluctant to do this.

I think as long as the board still shows interest it will stay. Bandwidth is not a problem. JM makes their money obviously from advertisement and the more boards the more ad's.

The issue is participation and moderating. As you know the moderators, like all the members, do this for free. Although we at VRDR have many mod's, they are scattered across the world and different time zones, this enables someone, most of the time, to be here.

Windows 95 is still alive in many computers. Look at Win 3.1, although that forum was combined with DOS, rightfully so ,as Win 3.1 relies on DOS, that forum is still active.

As technology progresses so do we. Most avid computer users want the latest and greatest. There are some die-hards that just won't change for the sake of changing. - People still using Win 3.1.

I am guilty as I have tried all O/S's and currently using XP Pro. However, as a MS MVP, like all of our MVP's we get to try different O/S and provide feedback to MS.

The thing to remember is "95" set the stage for all Operating systems to follow, although MS has discontinued support, there are still many users out there. And we here at VRDR will still try to help those with "95".

The thread; Tips & Tricks was just to spark some additional interest in Windows 95 and of course this forum.

We will stay here as long as it is needed. That's the bottom line.

I really only use 95 for real old laptops. 95 is osr2 with usb is a great o/s. It is a shame that usb was never developed more for 95 and that the browsers that Microsoft supplies were not upgraded past 5.5. It kinda makes other leaner operating systems a consideration. Getting specific ram for certain laptops is a bit of a problem so 95 works good for most people with older equiptment. My cutoff for Win 95 recomendations on laptops is if the laptop has 32 bit pcmcia slots (pentium 133 or better) I recomend Win 98SE, If less than that I recomend 95. If you have a pentium anything though and 32 megs of ram of course you can install and run 98SE. Just functionality is not really enhanced too much. Pentium 133's Laptops just started to come out with USB and 32 bit PCMCIA slots.

So what is the deal with 32 bit slots? Well usb 2.0 cards for one. Firewire cards for two. Wireless internet cards as well. A whole host of things are available for 32 bit slots that is current technology. Even though the wirless internet cards often want a faster processor they do work for the most part on slower machines. Some of the connection monitoring software uses a bit of processor load. My cable internet says pentium 300 or above and I hook up 486's to it all the time (at least once a month).

Now as for USB functionality Win 98SE pretty much does it all. I have seen some new usb devices though using USB 2.0 be Win 2000 or above. Win 95 is in the dust when it comes to current usb devices. It's a shame because the O/S is real stable.

95 is still alive but fading fast. I still like it though. It also can be a bit more tricky to load drivers on as most of the files you need you have to direct windows where to find them as it doesn't always seek them out with sucess on it's own! Still when I copy the .cab files to the hard drive it only takes less than 60 megs to do so. Very Very Small partition is needed! 95 will aloow you to run office software, Surf the internet, get email, and do things like early versions of project and publisher. For work needs and basic needs it can get the job done. Even listen to the cd player and internet music if you like. By no means is it all over for 95 yet. I do however fear when support for 98SE completely stops 98 and 95 will die shortly after. Both of those o/s's I liked very much. I do wish that somebody would buy all the 9X technology from MS and continue developement on them!
