Well can i hide my ip address when i visit some of site most preferrebly if i happen to surf some hacker or others site accidently
If i use the computer in network i have found that the ip for all compter is one
can i change that ip of the terminal comp to any thing i wany may be of class C
or may be change later
Well is it a crime?

You can change your computers address if you want to and it's not against the law. (although it may be in a few countries like communist China where they want to keep strict tabs on where people surf to with their computers)

But if it's a computer at a workplace then there might be restrictions on changing or hiding certain settings including IP address.

You can change any computers ip address on the network as long as all of the computers are on the same subnet. If they are different then you will run into a problem. The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has reserved the following three blocks of the IP address space for private internets (local networks):

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255

well what i have seen is when i send mail to any body suppose a person what they do is easily get my ip and trace that may be some thing like in www.whois.sc
and then the next day they are in my home even some web shopper
they know my country may inquire tel no
so what i want to do is hide that ip or may be change it.
especially the chat has been hazard for me as i can see many boys roaming around my house
so i seriuosly need some help.
I called my isp as well they didnt say any thing
so how can i change it
and well that ip is suppose to be unique so if i and the another person in may be other country assign same ip how does it work
well when u say in same subnet
is it that the computer in row should have ip in succesion

Hi Saharika... if you could explain more clearly what it is you want to know about your computers security we can give you more information. I'm not sure what exactly you mean by "many boys roaming around my house".

Is that a way of saying that you're getting emails from strangers? If so, it might be a good idea to start using a new email address and abandon the old one. Make the new one using numbers so spammers will have a harder time guessing it. For example instead of [email protected] use [email protected] (or something similar)

BTW.. there's really very limited use anyone can do with your IP address. They will know what ISP you use and possibly know what city you're in (not always the case.. could also be just the region or country) but they won't know you're phone no, address, or any personal info other than what you give them yourself in an email.

Of far more concern is securing your computer against things like keyloggers, trojans and viruses.

Also if that is a picture of you in your Avatar then you look like an attractive young lady, but there are folks out there who would see that as an opportunity to "try to get to know you" and will prey on innocnet young female victims.

So maybe you need to change your avatar so that you don't attrat attention for the wrong reason.

i just said well we can met but not seriously
when i inquired he said its all ip
i think these isp people had also helped to some extent
as my info entered registering was all correct
so what i want to do now is change my ip manually so that it will not give my location
ok if the isp whats its ok
(means some may think that i am trying to do wrong things so if security person ask its ok)
but lets not make it availabe to any one who tracks my ip does whois and may be calls or guess and comes here
so i am trying to hide ip or make it so that every one may not know it
i have a networking as well
server is not used i think it work on proxcies
so can this proxies can have any ip

Scary.

Do you have a dialup or a hispeed connection to the internet? If it's dialup then your IP changes almost every time you dial in. If it's cable it's probably permanent or rarely changes and there's not a lot you can do to change it other than request a change from the ISP. If it's DSL then you might be able to change it by turning your modem off then on again.

check your own IP quickly here..

BUT! I seriously doubt someone could find out who or where you are just by getting your IP address. He either found out through someone else, tricked you into giving the information somehow or managed to sneak a trojan or something similar like a keylogger onto your computer.

To be safe I would strongly suggest running hijackthis as per these instructions and posting the log in our hijack this forum..

well the man was some body i knew but i was not sure that he was chattin
when i say that some one i knew well he doesnt know my ip or ever have been in my home
so he told its all ip

use a proxy!!

if you hide your IP.. the data traffic won't find its way back to you..

If you want to hide your IP or return address for an email you have sent.. WHY? again how will a reply email get back to you.. unless you are writting a virus or sending spam..

If you don't want a site to know your real IP.. but still be able to view the site.. use a proxy server service..

Get a firewall.. also scan your system for viruses and trojans (use the cleaner from moosoft)

If you browsing to questionable sites.. you may be operating outside your employers Acceptable Use Policy..nuf said..

Using a proxy will give you some measure of anonymity. As undertaker says ultimately whatever data needs to be sent back to you whether it's email or browsing *some* computer needs to know your IP otherwise how else would you get it?

A proxy is a server or node along the path to and from your computer on the internet that disguises your IP but remembers it itself so that anything on the other side of it will only have its IP but not yours... when it gets data sent back along the line, since it and only it knows where it originated from (your IP) you will get it returned.

A typical web proxy will not hide your email headers/IP address.. it is only useful for browsing and webmail like yahoo.com, hotmail, etc.

Your regular email program will still have the headers of your own IP attached to it because it doesn't go through that kind of proxy when it's sent or returned.

There are other ways of anonymizing your email.. look at the last links below and there are some programs listed that can be used to do it. It's a bit involved though.



There are some problems using proxies though. The first kind I described, good web surfing proxies, are fairly common but
not free. You need to pay for the service.. not a lot but probably a few US dollars/month. There are many free proxies available but you need to switch them often because they never last long and they are almost always very slow... usually 25% of your normal speed at best (often slower, rarely faster)

This next page lists anonymous email options. There are basically two things here.. encryption and anonymity. They are separate items. Encryption encodes the email so no one but the person you sent it to can read it (but still has your headers showing) and anonymity, which involves remailing.. that means sending your email through a second or anonymous server (a proxy).

It's not a straight forward thing to do as you'll see when you look at this program that does remailing..

I've never used one so I can't really offer any shortcut help in setup but if you really want to try it out maybe someone else around here would be able to aid in the setup.

Ultimately, as I said before, although using proxies gives you a degree of privacy practising safe computing does the job a LOT better. It's obvious that this guy got your address from other means, not your IP, and was lying to protect someone else so I would suggest doing the things I said in my previous post and make sure that you don't give private information out to anyone you don't completely trust and don't be tricked to downloading any software onto your computer.

Do use a firewall as Undertaker suggests and make sure you use an antivirus program and regularly scan your computer for spyware too.

I'll just add one last thing here.. Frankly, I don't think that a proxy is the answer to your problem. You're dealing with other things here and if I were you I'd be seriously considering legal action if that guy shows up at your house again. Call the police and have him arrested. I wouldn't hesitate. They will find out how he got your private information and I can guarantee it wasn't from your IP adress.

well i think its not good to get in to every thing well may be my country has just some cyber law implemented so may be very hard

No it doesn't. It doesn't do anything like that at all. Think of a firewall like a door or a gate that allows or disallows your data or communications to go through or not. It has no effect at all on the IP numbers that you or anyone else uses or sees. It's an important security tool but not for masking or hiding an IP number.
