I just noticed that the dog companion in my XP search was gone.
How to have it back?
Disable it seems easy: start, search, then change preferences.
But I do not see anywhere a way to enable the dog companion back when I click on start, then search.

I have XP Home. I don't know if it would be different with XP Pro although I see that your column header says 'Search for Files and Folders' and mine says 'Search Companion'. I just go to:
Start > Search > "Change Preferences" > "With (or Without) an animated screen character"

I wish I saw the"change preferences" as you mentioned, but I did not see "preferences" anywhere. Please help me again.

I too am using xphome. My search is the same as Duanes apart from I have search 'with a different character' under search 'with animated character' as shown in 'Search2'.

It would appear that your search is similar to ie. When I click on 'search the internet' from 'search' I get a similar format as shown in your attachment.
Yes, you're right. For some obscur reasons, my XP search disapeared to make place to regular search. Very strange.
Do you know off hand, how to go back to XP search? Just a thought.
I think it's highlu unlikely that Microsoft would have misspelt "Options" as "Optons", which makes me think that you've got some malware on your PC.
Run Spybot and Adaware and see if they find anything:

heuh! you referred to "search options" on the screen shot attached? Well, I hate to contradict you, but MS spells it right: wi th a "P".
I ran SpyBot, Add-Aware : my PC is fine.
What to give, now. I hate to reinstall WinXP. It is not an option.
On your screen shot there is an "I" missing from options - "Optons". I still think you've got malware, but I'll get a second opinion.

If it was, well, the "i" was there.
As TJolly said: the search from IE took over my XP search.

Well, that's bizarre. I was on my other PC earlier with a fairly old 17" monitor. On that one your screenshot clearly said "optons" - I even got the missus to confirm it. Now I'm on my main PC with 19" monitors and the word is correctly spelt :confused: I take back what I said, in that case, I don't think it is malware now.
Get your XP CD handy, then go to Start>Run and type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes.

Either really, if you don't have it in it will ask when it's ready for it.
Look at what I got when I typed sfc/scannow after I clicked at start , then run:

PS: I have 3 System Recovery CD from the manufacturer. Would Win XP be in one of them?
