Dial-up speed boost, is this possible?
I received this memo from a friend:
"First thing you do is go in your add "new hardware" in the control panel, your going to let the computer search for new hardware, you click next till you come to the window that asks if the hardware is in the list, click "no" then proceed to "next" till you get to the frame that asks "do you want windows to check for new hardware" check the yes tab and click next. Make sure your modem is on during, it should come to a frame after searching that has a button that says "details, click the details button, it should of found a "standard modem." this standard modem is the key, its an Ethernet modem that’s in all windows operating software, its between 115k-230kbps. Now if your search didn't find that modem, delete your modem that you use and run the same search letting the computer find the modem for you, don't add the standard modem yourself, its not the same one. this is the modem your going to use to get online, but your going to keep the 56k also, cause it uses those drivers to connect.
Lets say your computer found that standard modem. of click out of there and click on the modem in the control panel, click the standard modem click properties, change the speed to 115,200, then click connection tab at top and click port settings, put the buffer slider all the way to the high side, both of them, click ok all the way out, not do the same for your other 56k modem, once that’s done click "diagnostics tab where it shows your two modems, then click the port your standard modem is assigned and click tab "more info" it should say 115,200k, on both modems when you check them both ,right? ok all the way out of the control panel.
Now click start, programs accessories, communications, dial up networking. click your connection the drop down will appear click properties, change your faithful 56k modem to the standard modem, click apply and ok all the way out
Now click "my computer, then properties, device manager, scroll down to ports (com/lpt) click the first one, cause your going to do this with all the ports no matter if your using them or not, click properties, then port settings in the window where its says "bit per second, change the speed from 9600 to the highest speed in the drop down list,(921,600) now go to the bottom where it says flow control, change the value from Xon/Xoff to HARDWARE then click the advance tab below and set the buffer to the right all the way over to high like in the modem. click apply and ok click back to the ports and do this same step with whatever other ports you have, and when your finished restart your computer. your all set. what this all does is uses the standard modem to get you online using the drivers from your 56k modem
now remember if the computer didn't find the standard modem on its own, your going to remove your 56k, and restart your computer again, it'll find your 56k, but the drivers will have to be re installed, but not after running a search for the standard modem first. under no means don't add this standard modem yourself cause its NOT the same one your computer searches for. this standard modem gives you high connection speeds through, are you ready for this? MS-DOS hyperterminal! the hyperterminal in DOS is not a modem, but a set of protocol of Ethernet drivers and tracerts that when brought to life by using your 56k drivers (the missing link) turns this into a super fast dialup connection.
just before you connect to the internet, go double check everything that its setup the way i told you, and also uncheck the box in dialup connection to use your area code., if you need further assistance, or get stuck I can get messenger and walk you through it cause you can do this online to a point. but the standard modem IS THE KEY!"
Any comments would be appreciated.

MS-DOS did not include HyperTerminal (HYPERTRM.EXE). It came with Windows and will only run in Windows, (i.e., it cannot be run in MS-DOS mode).
