A Minnesota teenager known online as "teekid" was arrested and placed on electronic monitoring Friday for allegedly unleashing a version of the Blaster computer worm that infected thousands of computers.

How much you want to bet that they won't catch the original programmer? (I hope they do, but he/she was not dumb enough to put their name in their, nor to have it check in and update from their website. Which means they may have something going for themselves.)

If I can confess here, I have always had the urge to do this with viruses... modifying them and setting them free. I'd be smarter than these kidz were, instead of using my system to unleash the bugs, I'd go to an out of town Library or a local one, or use Kazaa to do it and name the file Britney Spears.

Will either person actually spend time in jail though - I'm guessing not, they'll probably get some lame suspended sentence.
Taking their computers won't do much good either as they'll probably just go to an internet cafe or their mates house.
If they actually carried through and put them in jail for 10 years with no computer access, then maybe it might scare a few people into not doing it.
But then we'll probably get into arguments about human rights and the right to using a computer whilst in prison for education and re-habilitation.

Jeffrey Parson, 18, of Hopkins, Minn., was arrested Aug. 29 and faces one count of intentionally causing damage to a protected computer. The maximum sentence is 10 years in prison. Parson said little in court, other than to acknowledge his identity and tell the judge "Good afternoon." Trial was tentatively set for Nov. 17 in Seattle. Parson has been placed under home detention, but is allowed to attend school.

I wouldn't. He's not college educated, to start; and coders have told me he's not that great at it (coding). People who possess the knowledge to do that and more and have the smarts to not unleash massive negative impact on the world have a great deal more of my respect. He's pleading not guilty, but I saw the Google cache of his web page (it's gone now) and it had several viruses there for download. So I don't think he's quite as innocent and hard done by as he's now pretending. In fact it'll be interesting to see how he's going to explain that web page away.
Personally I hope they throw the book at him, I think a good stiff jail sentence might send a message to a few others of his ilk.
Actually, it was source code available for download. It wasn't like he was putting software-package-like executables into the hands of anyone who was looking to cause some trouble - as opposed to, say, the author of Sub7. And he had a bunch of links to educational virus/antivirus sites. Half the links no longer work, and none of the downloads.Quote:

My guess is he was a dabbler who made an executable with the theory of what it could do and then foolishly let it bounce right out of his hands and grow into a monster. Young people just don't realize how much trouble and damage they can cause by creating something and being careless and irresponsible with it. I don't think he did this out of maliciousness.
While he shouldn't get off easily, Microsoft shares the blame here and their actions (or more specifically, lack thereof) deserve at least equal repercussions. That said, they probably will make an example of him and ignore the origin of this issue.Quote:
