What in the world is this, I've never seen this before. I started up the PC and right away came to VirtualDr, a few minutes later I get this pop up...

Can someone explain this. I scanned my system both with ad-aware, trojan remover and spybot, came up clean on all. I haven't downloaded any thing lately, do others get these window on VDr? Or did VDr sell out?
That is a Windows Messenger Service pop-up ad. It can be disabled in Services.
Microsoft's resolution is to enable their firewall. Most people just disable it.

I've been using XP ever since it came out, I've never seen "Messenger Service" pop-up ad ever before, and I also use a pop-up blocker. So you believe it's a Windows Messenger Service pop-up ad that can be disabled in Services. :confused: :confused:

I will add though, that I had my firewall down when I got the message, don't know if that's related. I rarely have it down.
Another method is to block NetBIOS ports 135, 137, 138. and 139 through the firewall. Each firewall uses a different method of blocking ports. You'll have to look for your firewall documentation or website for information on the proper procedure.
That's it then, I had the firewall down and I do block NetBios by default.

Hi, just to add a little not. I recently connected to Broadband internet, and for the occasion, I installed Windows XP. Anyway, about 10 minutes after I installed XP, I got a very similar Pop-up like yours. I checked out the problem, and I got to the same conclusions. Disable Windows Messenger service and the problem will go away.

Disabling the Messenger Service is curing the symptoms without curing the disease! You need to install and use a firewall, if these people can access your ports to use an internal networking facility, then they can access them for far more serious purposes, like installing trojans, etc.
btw after u disable it u either need to restart your comp and stop the messaging service as turnng it off don't stop the current messaging service.

True, a firewall is a must. I run the XP firewall.
The XP firewall is better than nothing at all, but it's a very poor product. It won't stop any trojans that slip through from "phoning home" at all. You'd be much better of with either ZoneAlarm or Outpost which are both free, or if you don't mind spending some money I've found Norton Internet Secxurity to be the best I've ever used.

I have both of those programs, but I prefer not to use them. I keep trojans out with a cocktail of ad-aware (including ad-watch), spyware blaster and spybot s&d. I think I'm pretty much protected.
