811493: Security Update (Windows XP)

Well I did a test I installed 811493 and had it installed for about a week and noticed my computer was slow about maybe 5 to 10% well I uninstalled it, ran defrag etc then I did some tests. Installed it again to notice a minor delay in right clicking and when opening explorer the flash light would load for a few seconds, uninstalled it again and now notice a 10 to 15% speed increase.

What is wrong with microsoft are they so lazy that they will make updates that actually make your computer run worse for what stupid security updates that come out every week and is probably the reason why my browser has been freezing up. Microsoft is too lazy and stupid to not test these things out.

The only grip I have now is when I go to windows update it shows up to install it in critical updates yea critical slow down your machine updates. :mad:

they have changed this from a critical upgrade to a recomended upgrade maybe pretty soon they will drop it altogether, as i understand it it is only good if you think someone is going to sabotage your computer from your on home.

I have this update in my system but I have not noticed any slow performance with my system. By your description I can see that you have tested and retested it. Some other software may be impacting this update.

no, it is definitely the 811493 patch....there have been so many complaints I have read about it's almost unbelievable...installed it myself and had the same problem...uninstalled it and everything is once again fine.....some people have had no problems but MOST HAVE....if you don't have a problem you are among the lucky ones....:)

I agree. There are complaints and warnings all over the net (forums, newsletters, etc). Here is a paragraph from Woody Leonard's "Windows XP" newsletter.

"If you had the misfortune to download and install the patch for Microsoft's MS03-013 security bulletin last week, you may have discovered that it, uh, leaves a bit to be desired. Apparently if you're running any of several major anti-virus packages, there's a fair chance that installing the MS03-013 security patch will slow your PC down to a crawl.
So far, the only solution put forward by anyone at Microsoft (that I'm aware of anyway) involves disabling your anti-virus software. HA!
Far better - disable the lousy patch:
> Click Start|Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs
> Scroll way down to Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q81493, and click on it
> Click Remove, then Next.
When the uninstaller is done, click Finish, and Windows XP will re-boot.

I made the mistake to install 811493. I had immediate problems with it. The bott process took a much longer time, applications, incl. Explorer, took a while to open, context menus when first time cright clicking on a file or folder took an eternity to appear. It affected only the first time opening after a start up, after wards things were pretty normal. So I removed the patch and things went back to normal with one excetion and this is the first time openening of contect menus. It still takes its time.

Now the question. After removal of this patch no reboot was requested by XP. Isn't this a bit odd? I did a reboot myself because I do this after any removal or installation of a program.
What should one check whether it is completely removed?

If I would reinstall this patch it should reappear in Control Panel > Add Remove Programs. Shouldn't it? Secondly, in Windows Update it should reappear and be dleted from the installation history. It does not come up and the installation history still shows it as succefully installed.

Yes, if/when you re-install the fix it will appear in your add/remove list.

It appears in your history because it is part of your computer's history that the update was successfully downloaded and installed. It doesn't record that you deleted it. If you re-install it I assume it will appear as another successful download and installation.

Now comes the clue. I actually downloaded the patch from the MS Security website after removal and reinstalled it! The installation took only a second with a Window poping up and immediately disappearing again. Nothing turmed up in Control Pamel > Add/Remove programs. Aparently it has not installed again. something odd again!?

I remember reading that uninstalling can affect you AV program. Is this correct ?

I haven't noticed a huge slow down although it takes a while to load things when I boot.

Please advise if the uninstall is as simple as Add / Remove - reboot & everything is back to normal ..........:o Sorry but if there is a problem related to uninstalling, I would probably get it & not know how to fix it !

I haven't gone near to 2 latest patches for IE & OE - just in case ....

PS: never mind : I found the patch in the add/remove list.

I removed the patch via Add/Remove and rebooted...everything back to normal now. I read somewhere that Microsoft has been flooded with complaints about this patch and doesn't have an answer as yet.

I also noticed MS put it in the recommended updates instead of the Critical updates. Now you can put it in the Personalize Update and not have it show up all the time on the Update site.

Your right. I just checked and I was able to move it. I'm glad to have it out of sight at least.

Some of you may remember talking to me recently concerning a "simple" problem with my DVD player that went completely crazy when I attempted to try a DVD out after 14 months of owning my computer!

To make a long story short, I ended up with "NTLDR is compressed and press Ctl-Alt-Dlt to restart"--this resulted in my first doing an HP non-destructive restore (twice) and then ultimately I had to format my computer entirely (HP Quick Format) losing information I had not backed up.

HP Technical Support was very helpful even though my warranty with them expired with the computer's first birthday, but I was instructed not to keep downloading the patches and updates that Windows kept telling me were available. I was very careful to keep up with all of these updates. I was told that Microsoft updates (I think the most recent was SP1) don't necessarily mean a clean fix as has been discussed in this forum. This techie believed that was my major problem with my computer when everything went kafluey.

My question is now that things seem to be up and running well again, exactly which if any updates and upgrades would you recommend installing? Over the course of the past fifteen months quite a number of updates were available and downloaded. :confused:

Sp2 is on it's way soon. It may be worth waiting for this as hopefully all the bugs will have been fixed by then :rolleyes:

I am not sure if you can select form the CD which updates you require.

I certainly do not just download Windows updates as they arrive now - even if they are marked ' critical ' some do not even apply to my setup at all.

I wait for reports first .... once bitten :o
