Just A Quick Testimonial...

Hi Friends,

I have learned some mighty helpful things in the years that I have been hanging out here on VDr. One thing that I've never known how to do is to check a power supply to see if it is dead. Then I recalled a snippet that I had found on here a while back, posted by some kind soul long forgotten...

This morning I put together a system that I plan to give to a friend as a surprise. I put all the stuff in a spiffy new case, but could not get it to light up, no matter what I tried. So I used the check your power supply test (with a paper clip). Sure enough, even though brand new, it's dead. I moved the components over into another new case just like it, and it fired right up. :p

I thought I'd post this link in hopes that it will help other enthusiasts down the road, as it was really nice to confirm that the unit was dead, rather than something amiss in how I had put things together. So, rock on, Vdr! What a place to learn! :D

Limerick, you done good.
But as a suggestion from building many systems, always
check activity with every add-on.
Power supply can be checked quickly by hooking a fan or
hard drive to one of the molex connectors. That loads the
P/S enough to get the readings off the main terminal block
connectors.
Then P/S, mobo/cpu/memory, voltages still good?
Then video, kbd, mouse, crt/ttf/??. Get a "POST"?
Power On Self Test should produce proper beeps for what
type machine the bios has.
I do all this before even getting the mobo in the case.
Just too many times building and tearing apart and then
trying to isolate a prob.
Then drives, etc again checking all the way in between.
Just sharing my technique, but I did many and learned by
trial and error. Start with least common denominator.
The feeling of turning that last screw, plug it in and turn it on.....
and elation or deflation.

Yep! Checking your progress "piece by piece" is definitely a worthy path to follow. You are surely right about having a great feeling when you finish putting things together and she lights up at the flip of the switch!

The thing that really appeals to me in doing the test shown on that link I posted above is that you can determine in just a few seconds if the power supply is good or not. And that's a good thing! :D

And I learned something else new to me, Molex, had no idea that is what those connectors were called. :D

A lot of water has passed under the proverbial bridge since I last posted here. (In fact, I'm surprised that I still remembered my password.) But I just now used the info in this thread to help check out why a new machine that I'm building won't light up at all. I've determined that the PS has power, so I'll press on now to ferret out the problem...

It's nice to know that someone actually noticed that I have returned, and that I was missed, at least to some degree...

Looks like the site has received a nice "sprucing up" since I used to haunt the airwaves here. It looks really nice. Enthusiasts are still looking to you good folks to help solve their problems, and that's the beauty of this place.
