please help me help Buddy...

Hi gang - Buddy's running 98fe on a pretty small system with just 32mb ram. 2 issues (maybe related?):

1 - Getting the following error regularly, and periodic freeze-up.
Tried reinstalling ie6 but nogo. Also, tried the reg fix as per THIS page and nogo too.
Thought about having him completely uninstall ie6, use IERADICATOR, then install ie5.5 sp2 (my ie personal preference) ans see if that takes care of the problem. Any ideas?

Hi ^dAvEy^...startups are clean. There's a BHO that I think is part of RealNetwork's "NetZip Download Demon" - NZDD.DLL - but that shouldn't be a problem. The Regedit error listed in the Startlist is also not a problem - Script Sentry is just doing its job.

What is Bitware, referenced in autoexec.bat?

I'd lose RamBooster (uncheck from msconfig) to see if it helps. I'm not a fan of these "booster" programs. Is the swap file set or managed by Windows? With AVG installed on D, it would seem like the system is low on disk space. Is this the case?

I can't comment on IERadicator as I have seen some horror stories. :rolleyes: Other than that, I know you do your research well and I haven't any more ideas. HTH anyway. :)

Wasn't sure how much to elaborate in my first post - sorry. The error and the odd looking startup were in place prior to my installing ScriptSentry, RamBooster and a few other utilities like SpyBot (which got right busy!) and ZoneAlarm all the other day.

Not certain about the Bitware in autoexec.bat but my hunch is it has something to do with fax modem software. Buddy tells me that although he's on cable, uses 56k modem and phone line for fax.

Nevertheless, I don't understand why it is listed in autoexec.bat. Also, I don't know what all this is doing in there either (sure isn't in mine!):

swap files - I didn't check, but I'm betting big they're being managed by windows - I can't confirm right now...

I didn't check disk space, but should be good considering we replaced Norton with AVG and ScriptSentry for scripts all on D.

Scandisk comes up clean and Defrags straight through.

Have used IEradicator myself without problems, but am interested about probs people have had with it - I'll do a bit of poking around. Seams the error has to do with IE upgrades and incompatible versions of WEBCHECK.DLL. TBsaid, I think it has something to do with that Bitware and the dial-up fax...

The error I've noted is only in THIS entry on that page - that's the one I"ve been working with.

Just dos paths. Really don't need them or autoexec.bat
unless you have some dos programs being started at bootup.
Bitware is old data/fax software.
Twain is/was a scanner or tape, etc. driver loading.
May try start/run/msconfig/ and uncheck process autoexec.bat
file.
I have 98Fe and no need for autoexec.bat or config.sys and
my stuff is ancient.

Nick is correct in that Twain is a scanner driver ands still used w/ the "newer " equipt. even if not a Twain scanner by name I would sugget not playing w/ it, at least from a personal experience point of view.

My main bud, john3:16, has a point, but after running
twain devices on my windows 98 machine, the OS handled them differently than older OS's..dos, win3.1, some win95.
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT are the bastard twins that handle driver loading, TSR initialization, memory configuration, and other menial tasks for real mode DOS--and for some legacy applications running on Win9x. Windows does everything it possibly can to ensure that you'll never actually need these files or their command line instructions, and unless you're hopelessly dependant upon a very old and quirky program, or addicted to a pre-1996 game, you probably don't.
Old stuff, maybe.
Newer like my HP PSC 750 4in1 print/scan/copy,scan....No.
But that's just my opinion. I'm usually wrong.

REM it out. That way if things go flakey, Just remove the Rem.
The line stays put. and if not needed and things run right you do not need to mess with it further.

I can give directions for that...
then he can see if the scanner and modem asre still fine...
if not, we can remove the REM?

So that could enhance overall windows performance, I spoze...
But now I wonder if that's got much to do with the error...

From what I've been reading, seams there's a problem with the IE6. I tried repairing it myself but that failed. I think I'd uninstall it and accept the option to revert to earlier version. I think there was a problem with the upgrade - comments please...

I have seen horrible problems with IE6.0 and IE6.0SP1 working on both Win 98 and Me. I have also seen numerous people with either version on the same OS and it runs flawlessly. No idea why this is so. My only two cents is to uninstall while in Safe Mode. I have my fingers crossed for you because when IE6.0 screws up it sometimes really screws up bad and won't uninstall.

Of course if it won't uninstall there is always format it'll remove pretty much anything.. nudge nudge wink wink.. a nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse

I'd prefer to see IE5.5 sp2 loaded, but I'm helping LD now, so for now I'm having Billy do a search for WEBCHECK.DLL to check for (multiple?) version(s). I'm thinking if an earlier version is in Windows/System AND IE6 version is on the PC somewhere else, maybe can use SFC to get things sorted? Seam logical?

I find it interesting I only have a copy of WEBCHECK.DLL in backups on MY system, but I did a barebones ie 5.5 sp2 install here...we might try just renaming the file sans the DLL extension too maybe?

IE 6 and have had it happen with 5.5 also. You get a bad install and can not revert. or It can not repair.
Answer is to download and overinstall the same version.
