Keyboard Doesn't Work After XP Install

I have just upgraded from ME to XP Home. On install of XP I can complete the install up to the point where it asks me to setup my internet connection, activate XP and setup users. From there on my keyboard is dead???

After pressing reset on my PC I managed to logon to windows without it requesting a user name and password. I went to the Device Manager and my keyboard had a "!". I went through the troubleshooter and couldn't resolve my problem.

When I disabled then enabled the keyboard it worked!!!

But, everytime I reboot it doesn't work again until I do the above. I have gone to windows update and installed all the critical updates and drivers available, but it's still doing the same thing.

My keyboard is a "Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard", well that's what it says. The brand name on the top of it says Auriga and it is model K292P.

Any suggestions???

There appears to be a driver issue, especially with you mentioning the exclamation! Did you get a driver disk with the keyboard?

If so, try the Windows 2000 driver and work backwards if there is no XP driver on the disk

I have checked the Auriga site and there is only a driver for a K361P. There is no harm in trying it, you can always undo!

If all else fails, you could always get a new keyboard :(

I tried the driver from the Auriga site. Was a huge download, and after all that I had no success.

I guess a new keyboard's in store for me unless anyone has any more suggestions?

Considering the fact that you can pick up a new keyboard for $10, further troubleshooting doesn't seem worth the trouble to me...

I have just purchased a new keyboard, installed the drivers and am still having the same problem.

The new keyboard is a Genius Comfy KB-09e and is compatible with XP.:(

The error message in the Device Manager Properties for the keyboard is "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".

M$ says this is the reason for the code number:

This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed.

And this is their fix:
To resolve this error code, make sure the device is connected to the computer correctly. For example, make sure all cables are plugged in fully and that all adapter cards are properly seated. Follow the suggested solution button and update the device driver. It may be possible to remove the device and redetect it using the Add New Hardware wizard.

I would try the last sentence.....;) go into device manager and click on the plus sign to show your keyboard, then right click keyboard and select remove. Restart computer. This should pick up and reinstall the keyboard.

I have already tried that.

I have been trying to look up my problem on the internet and stumbled across an article on the MS website. This is what some of it reads:

"When Windows reports the status of a PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port, a Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard, or a PC/AT PS/2 Keyboard (84 Key), it reports the status of the port itself. It does not necessarily report the status of any device connected to the port.

If a PS/2 mouse port or PS/2 keyboard port is installed in your computer, and the port is enabled in the BIOS settings for your computer, Windows reports the status of the port on the Device Manager tab in the System Properties diaglog box."

Do you think I have a problem with my BIOS settings?

Forgive me, Jordan but the Genius website reports this K/b as PS2

Are you connecting the K/b through a PS2 to USB adapter?
If so, it may be faulty. If not then the article is irrelevant as it relates to USB devices

If it is the former, take the adapter off and try inserting into your PS2 Socket on the back

:o Whoops, sorry. Yes my keyboard is a PS/2 but it is not plugged in via USB. It is plugged into the PS/2 port on my PC.

This may seem like a really DUMB question, but you haven't plugged the keyboard into the mouse port, have you, by accident?

Two other questions, are you getting any beeps at boot up other than a standard single beep and do the keyboard lights come on at boot up, before going off?

Nope. It's a purple plug, plugged into the purple socket.

Re your other questions, I will reboot and post back.

I can hear a faint beep coming from the case then another louder beep coming from my speakers. Can't remember if this is normal though.

All three keyboard lights flash once on reboot.

OK, so we have established that the computer has seen the keyboard, it is just Windows that hasn't!! That makes
things a little easier

Okay, sounds a little confusing. Do I need to backup my registry or anything first?

Please enlighten me further on #10. I probably will not have a restore point as this was a clean install of XP and it has been doing it since installation.
