Okay here's my problem, I have 128MB RAM/PC100 Mhz stick installed. Can I take out the 128MB/PC100 stick and install two 128MB RAM/PC133 sticks? Or do I have to stay with the 128MB/PC100 SDRAM? I also am running Windows 98SE and heard that more than 256MB RAM would cause problems. Ideally I would like to run three 128MB RAM/PC133 sticks.
you shouldn't have any problems using pc133, but if the fsb is only 100mhz then the ram will run at 100mhz instead of 133. on that note, there's a good chance you'll be able to use the existing pc100 and the new pc133 and not run into any problems (as long as you leave the fsb at 100mhz ... if it's even 100mhz).
384mb should be fine, though windows starts to have (fixable) problems around 512mb and 1gb.

Thanks Chris... Just one question. Can I leave the 128MB/PC100 stick in place and add two 128MB/PC133 sticks in the remaining two slots? It sounds like that is what you are saying...bear in mind I'm somewhat a newbie.

Mixture of the two types should still work, unless there is design compatibility issue(s).

If the 128MB PC100 is the factory [read computer manufactors] memory, I'd take it out. But, i have had them work with no problems also. If that is original Compaq, remove it.

as shinma and train stated, and as i stated previously, there's a good chance that you can use the old memory with the new. the only way to find out for sure is to try.

I think the 128MB/PC100 is OE since I bought the puter new, so it stands to reason it is. Here's what I am going to do, go and buy 3 128MB/PC133 sticks, take out the OE stick and see if the PC133's work. The sticks are made by K-BYTE at $34.99 each.
two more questions,,, what is fsb and how do I determine what the fsb is on my puter?

Okay I installed the 128MB/PC133 sticks in slots 1 & 2 with the OE 128MB/PC100 stick in slot 3 which (by the way is where I found it upon opening the case?) not sure if it matters but I would think slot 1 would be the logical spot. So far no problems so I am going to put another PC133 stick in tomorrow so long as there are no problems until then.

I just installed 3 128mb pc100 CL3 sticks of RAM, at the reccomendation, of a site at http://www.crucial.com I just put in Compaq Mod# 5245 Presario and they showed all the RAM that that model required, the Total you could put in and I don't believe that PC133 CL2 was offered. I believe they said that this model would not benifit from anything over PC100 CL3. Anyway it's Micron RAM and I learned alot about how RAM works,so it might be worth a look, just to learn a little more how RAM works in your Computer. Marturo

Marturo...I had the same reservations as you, after doing some research, talking to the folks here, and going to crucial.com, I decided the 128MB/PC133 sticks probably would work so I installed them and have no problems so far. Here is what crucial has to say:

I am by far a tech but I have noticed my harddrive doesn't cackle anymore. It could very well be because I have more memory, more than likely it is. Is my pc faster? So far I notice some improvement in tasks performed, but that was not my entire goal. Mainly I wanted more memory so my harddrive did not have to work harder than it should.
