well, actually, the bump mentioned in the newsletter IS caused by me.
I wrote a message about things I had to look at this week.
That was 106 and it never showed...
the episode I described wasn't fun.

he got hit ( I jumped almost out of my chair by this enormous, almost out of the blue Thunderclap. It musta been one of them things Train described, cuz the guy lives 23 miles from here...)
I'll never know whether my system was in danger, but I suppose so.
I have a Belkin surgemaster II
(yep, I followed the advice I found in the thread)
The cable CO had installed coax protect earlier this year.
(I also had a FAX-modem hooked up to the Belkin, and nothing came thru here).

dead mobo, dead modem,
so I had to try rescue his data (and succeeded, but not without problems...)
he probably also has damage on the electronics of his two Hard disks, CDrom reader and a burner, all of which acted kinda screwy, so I assume they took a hit over the bus...
I saw memory errors aplenty...
(with NEW memory, mind you...)
It sure looks like testing his components in another machine put it in danger.

Anyway, I was lucky, the machine I tested his components in got back to normal after a hard CMOS reset and flash. Found newer BIOS so it may have done some good as well.)

conclusion was, GET a GOOD surgeprotector, and not something you pick up at 4 bucks in the supermarket

surge protectors! Heres my thoughts.. anything unde 1000 joules isn't enough!! Woods makes ones for computers 1650 joules 3 outlets spaced for transformers 5 normal outlets and protection for phone lines. $29.00! $100,000.00 protection warrenty. when surge protector is used up the light goes out and it becomes a ordinary power strip! can't go wrong there! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
